AUGUST 3. 1977 1 Twice Told Tales . ^eccooooccoeoooooooooooeoocooeccooacceoooco FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 4, 1927) The annual election of of ficers for the Fox River Valley Improvement and Protective association was held at the McHenry home of the secretary, Mrs. Francis A. Bear. The organization has suspended for sixty days only the regular initiation fee of $5 and will accept applications for memberships on payment of one year's dues ($1). Thus far this organization was suc cessful in procuring gas and electricity for owners, south of the bridge. The organization today is up in arms against the proposed dam at Nippersink and is doing everything possible to bring about the building of a new dam at the site of the present dam. The majority of the members of this organization are summer residents. The McHenry Collegiates have won their third successive game. The boys are prepared to give the Crystal Lake team a good trimming. The lineup of the new team is as follows: "Zukie" Kinsala, first; "Torchy" Krause, second; "Colonel" Stoffel, third; "Bun" Thurlwell, shortstop; Jimmie Fay, catcher; "Bear" Kreutzer, catcher; Harold •Up Frett, left field; "Paulie" Karls, catcher; Mike Contiray, right fields Jim Geier, right field; "Tillie" Patzke, pitcher. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 5, 1937) Two fatal accidents in as many days was the death toll at the dangerous intersection of Routes U.S. 12 and 14, south of McHenry and Terra Cotta, last week when a Woodstock man, William Glawe, was killed and the next day Frank E. Jolitz of Carpentersville, lost his life at the same place. Dairymen and milk dealers today blame an increase in milk prices on their inability to compete with federal relie( projects hiring men. They supported farmers - in demanding that relief rolls be slashed to compel men now living off the taxpayers to accept harvesting jobs and save the state's crops. Bill Kreutzer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Kreutzer of McHenry, has signed up with the Norfolk Elks of the Nebraska State baseball league, it has been announced. f\\ie young southpaw pitcher, who received his start in McHenry, has been pitching for the Huron, S.D., team and has a bright future, according to reports which indicate that the New York Americans have him booked on approval. This is his id summer in the west. ;re are approximately 795 telephones in use in McHenry and Vicinity, according to the naijtes listed in-the new telephone directories which were mailed out recently. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 14, 1952) St. Patrick's parish, McHenry, is enthusiastically awaiting the fall school term, when the beautiful new school now nearing completion will be opined for its first classes. Ground was broken last Sep tember for the construction of the one-story building, which is expected to care for the educational needs of about 140 pupils in eight grades the first year. The structure will ac commodate - about 200 at maximum capacity. This Hebron Green Giants had nothing on the Johnsburg Tigers in the way of a parade Prices effective while quantities lost. More than sixty cars made up the caravan procession which made its way around the county, led by a beautiful float, on Monday night. Baseball fans will be "pulling" for them as they go on to the national tournament in Wichita, Kas., later this month. A total of 147 pints of blood were donated by 189 donors when the Blood Bank from the Chicago mobile unit visited McHenry for the second time in a little more than three months last week Wednesday. It was the mobile unit's seventh visit to the county. There were only twenty-two rejections, which brought the total to nearly 200 who had volunteered to assist this worthy cause. TEN YEARS AGO * (Taken from the files of August 10, 1967) A true bill for murder was drawn up by the grand jury, charging a William Treat, 29, of 209 Lake Shore drive, Lakemoor, with murder on several counts. He was arraigned before Judge Van Deusen in Lake county the following day and the case was continued until Treat is able to obtain counsel. The local man is charged with the fatal shooting of his brother, Howard Treat, 34, in the Gra-Mar tavern, Rt. 12, south of Lake Zurich. He died early the following morning in Condell Memorial hospital, Liber- tyville, after being shot three times at close range by his brother, according to a witness: McHenry's City Council passed the annual tax levy ordinance in the amount of $1^8,979.21, the increase mainly due to bonds and interest payments due this year. It was explained that an effort was made to avoid a corporate tax rate increase, figuring that revenue will increase through expansion of the city. Twenty-seven McHenry area Boy Scouts and four leaders returned Sunday morning from a week long trip to Washington and Idaho. The purpose of this trip was to give the boys and their leaders the opportunity to visit the twelfth World Jam boree at Farragut State Park, Idaho, and to see some of the ' northwestern portion of our country.
