Peter Grimes" Britten, "Die Wagner and by Summer Activity Program In Full Swing For Youth The summer activity program which beun several weeks ago is in full swing; at least among the younger children it appears to have been warmly accepted. The tiny tots program, ages 4 to • years old, had a coloring contest. The winners were as follows: First place - Jenelle Rees, second place - J.P. Frederick, third place - John Lamphier, fourth place - Heidi Fischer and fifth place - Christine Gath. Plaques were awarded to first, second and third place winners. All other participants received finger puppets. Those who were ab sent Thursday may pick up their awards any time this week. Besides coloring and musical chairs the children play various games and they are thoroughly enjoying their program of activities. The arts and crafts program for 7 to 10 year old girls is equally enjoying a good turnout of youngsters. This group is busy making ornaments out of styrofoam balls and yarn pictures. Perhaps some of you parents have already seen some of their products. The program of arts and crafts for boys 7 to 10 years old made airplanes and had air plane throwing contests. The boys also constructed items from popsicle sticks. The program of arts and crafts and homemaking for 11 to 15 year old girls had the girls involved in making macrame necklaces and bracelets. They also made paper-folded stars. The remainder of the activity program needs participants. On Mondays there is still a need for men and boys (over 15) for Softball. Women are invited to this also. Tuesday's volleyball for men and women is lacking enough players to conduct a game, lliursday's Softball for fathers and sons could use more players too. If this summer program has a large enough turnout, the program will continue throughout the year. A suc cessful summer program means a winter program of activities too. Get in shape and participate. But few are sure ju* how much that is, and the slosh ing of the gasoline between up hill and downhill routes can cause the indicator to swing back and forth from one side of the "E" to another. v » This fall, Fonl Motor Co. will be offering, for around $100, an option to Continental Mark V buyers, a new option that m\\ take a lot of the question maiL out of the nearly-out-of-gas situ ation. Johnsburg Ends Sum/per School Johnsburg Community U nit School District No. 12 has j ust completed its twelfth c on- secutive Title I Summer Scf 100I program. This year, for the third time, the program in cluded kindergarten children as well as children from Grades 1 through 5. Both math and reading were offered. Mrs. Evelyn Zvonar and Mrs. Margaret Stenzel provided the Twelfth Program basic format by researching activities, and did much of the planning for the units taught. The theme of the program was, "The Me I Can Be", and was broken down into six units. The first unit, "This Is Me" was introduced with a filmstrip describing the similarities and differences In people. During this time respect for others was discussed as well as the im portance of each person in the group - hopefully, developing a feeling of self-worth and dignity in each child. The second week, the unit, "The Talking Me", helped to stimulate interest in the English language and com- s munication, thereby teaching the children more atfout the language and giving them the opportunity to talk to a group of children* with confidence. During the third week, "The Talented Me" unit was a fun, activity-filled week. On Friday, the children performed, showing special talents, such as singing and playing a musical instrument. During the fourth week, "The Feeling Me" unit helped show the children how people felt in various situations and gave them an opportunity to tell how they would feel in similar situations. Interesting discussions took place. The fifth week, "The Responsible Me" unit illustrated, through a filmstrip, how parents and teachers are responsible for children and how they in turn have responsibilities to live up to - this was interesting and very PAGE 11 • PLAINDBALER * FRIDAY, AUGUST I. valuable. The sixth and final week, "The Future Me" was the theme and discussions were held daily on the children's futures, tomorrow, next week and as they grow older.
