Also mark > your calendar for our bus tour > in October. : ; HERE AND THERE * > William Andriott of Pearl * Harbor arrived here last ' Wednesday morning to attend the funeral of Ralph Ackerman. Bill is a good friend of Chuck and Bev's and spent a few days with them before returning to Hawaii. Art, Katy and Dave Christopher traveled to Ap- pleton last weekend to spend a couple of days with Diane and Gary Linstad. Saturday night they met with other members of Art's family at his sister's in Green Bay for a - wonderful reunion. Everyone had a wonderful time catching up on news and enjoying good food. On Sunday, Art and Dave helped the Linstads with the new house they are building. Maya and Tom Walkington spent the weekend with Tom's parents, the Paul Walkingtons. Of course the main reason for the visit this past weekend was the 10-year class reunion of Tom's from the McHenry Community high school. There were others of course who enjoyed the class reunion and I hear tell that they all had a real good visiting time. Sure do change even in ten years. < BIRTHDAYS ' Aug. 6 is that special day for Bob Betts, and Aug. 7 is the natal day for Eddie Edinger. PRIZES AWARDED FOR CLOSEST TO PIN AND LONGEST DRIVE IN EACH AGE BRACKET H°T (X)G$ **>!> JSSI A step in the right direction was accomplished by Helping Paws' Spay-Neuter month (May, during which period 115 female dogs, thirty-six male dogs, seventy-one female cats, and fifty-eight male cats, a total of 280 animals, received spay-neuter surgery under this program. Half of the fees charged for surgery were paid by Helping Paws; half by the pet owners themselves. Helping Paws spent $4,348.75 on the program. The results represent a noteworthy ac complishment in humane ef forts to control the over population of dogs and cats. Let's illustrate with a little multiplication exercise. Consider if these 280 had procreated as either fathers or mothers, alloting each four offspring per year, the very minimum HP has saved from adding to the unwanted statistics is 1120 per year. Consider again if each of the 1120 had produced four off spring per year, you now have 4480 animals, who would likewise procreate. The statistics become staggering as you multiply, and that's just what the dogs and cats do unless kept from roaming, or controlling it the spay-neuter surgery way. They multiply to their own detriment and sorrow mainly because of irresponsible and "temporary" owners who dump animals without a thought of their fate. Those who truly love animals and realize the tragic fate in store for them consider spaying and neutering one of the prime obligations of an owner who wants a pet. Backyard breeders do not help the situation; nor those who let unspayed and un- neutered dogs and cats roam, often turning out the parent animals, the puppies and kit tens. animal welfare groups just do not need this kind of irresponsibility to add to their woes and dictate the sad fates that befall animals. In the present crisis situation it's either spay-neuter or keep the animals in; help spread the* word to those who haven't realized the seriousness of the situation. Last week's column related the beginnings of an effort to establish a Cooperative Humane society shelter in McHenry county. Now, more news on the subject. Because there are groups who want to participate in this project, it looks like it will include a wildlife rehabilitation and refuge center, an equine shelter, as well as dog and cat shelter, all combined in one. Land is available for this shelter and donations are a practical way to assist with the project. Please send your donations to 1 Helping Paws, P.O. Box 205, Crystal Lake, 60014, designating them as con tributions to the Shelter fund. And, stay tuned to WIVS radio station at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, when Mary Nelson, vice-president of Helping Paws, and David Patterson, director of operations of the Humane Society of North Central Illinois (South Elgin center), will be interviewed and receive question and an swer phone calls.
