Gilpin City Clerk (Pub. Aug. 5,10,1977) How do children get into the modeling business? Sometimes it's luck. And it doesn't hurt to have a mother who has been in the business herself. The talent for expressing a variety of emotions before the camera just might rub off on the offspring. In the case of 2^-year-old Jackie McGinnis, it's probably a little bit of both. Lady Luck knocked because Jackie inherited a knack for putting her best face forward for the photographer. It happened like this. Jackie's mother, Shirley Caley of Woodstock, formerly of McHenry, took her daughter to a department store during a photographer's promotion. Without their knowledge, the photographer submitted Jackie's photo to National Talent Associates and Ms. Caley was contacted by letter by NTA. Interviews are scheduled this week, and if an agreement can be reached, Jackie will be signed ton five-year contract. The photogenic youngster will be used as an advetising model for magazines, newspapers, catalogs and television. As Shirley Zawislak, Jackie's mother modeled throughout the Chicago area, including the Speed ft Custom show at the amphitheatre. Jackie's grndparents are Mr. and Mrs. William Zawislak of 1413 Bayview, McHenry. Her great-grandparents are Clara Zawislak and Frank DePasquale, both of Chicago. I I I I I Conservation Unit Opposes Kishwaukee River Fill Plan A McHenry County Highway department plan to fill an oxbow of the Kishwaukee river, west of Marengo, has drawn opposition from the Illinois Department of Conservation. The county Highway department has applied for a permit from the Army Corps of Engineers to fill the oxbow as part of a construction project to replace two old bridges on U.S. Route 20, three miles west of Marengo. The bridges,, only 15 and 16 feet wide, are both substandard in width- y iZi 1 CRYSTAL LAKE UPHOLSTERY y THE WORD FOR OUR WEEKEND SPECIALS SINCE 1945 REPAIRING & * REGLUING Larry & Jim Seymour •15/459-0453 The county has proposed that it replace only the 95-foot long bridge which spans the main channel of the Kishwaukee. The plan calls for substituting an earthern embankment for a 75- foot long bridge which spans the oxbow. Destruction of the oxbow would result in a significant loss of prime aquatic habitat, according to a July 6 letter of objection to the Army Corps of Engineers from Richard Lutz of the Illinois Department of Conservation'# Long Range Planning division. An inspection of the oxbow showed "water in the oxbow is clear and cool, maybe' groundwater," according to a Department of Conservation fishery biologist. Surveys of the oxbow showed the presence of minnows, green sunfish, and nesting bluegills. Fishermen also report cat ching smallmouth ' bass, bullheads, und snapping turtles from the area. The Army Corps of engineers is under no obligation to follow the recommendations of the Department of Conservation but regularly consults with both the Conservation department and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service before granting waterways permits.
