Division A Bit-O-Blarney Residential Devel. Gp. Old Bridge - Chuck's Towing Huppy and Leo's Oak Park Hotel Another rousing Sunday. Of course, I started by going to church to get things in the proper perspective. The skies were heavy, but the lure of the club championship play at McHenry Country Club was strong. All was sunshine and good ol' country hospitality as Vale and Marge Adams held forth at the pro shop. A no-bumps cart was waiting and you guessed it -- or regular chauffeur for the annual event, Barb Weber, was right there to wheel us over the beautiful course. We followed the foursome of Champion Art Jackson, long time former Champ Eddie Buss, Lloyd Smith and Gary Adams. Hadn't seen Lloyd play before, but was impressed with the way he stayed right in there all the way. At the final count for the day, Art had a nifty 72. Fast on his heels was Bliss with 74. Gary and Lloyd each posted a 76. All good scores by good golfers. Eddie could have yelled "We wuz robbed" when a beautiful chip shot danced around the cup and did everything but drop in. As it appeared that Art was moving ahead and adding to his previous lead, Eddie told one and all that competition was tough - for second place. Art came back with, "I know all about second place". He was a close second many times when Eddie reigned supreme. Several umbrellas were opened when a few drops of rain fell, but the bumbershoots seemed to bring forth sunshine. Moisture and heavy air seemed to make the greens slower than usual. V Next week will tell the story and a large gallery i* sure to follow the players around the ' up to take the controls again. For me, the' club championship is one of the high spots in the year. John Busscher will be giving you up to date scores in his weekly report. Watch for the report, then try to get out next Sunday as the boys try to "Beat the Champ". When golf was over, we hustled to join a big crowd of relatives and friends who surprised Edward' and Ethel Blake to honor their 30th wedding anniversary. While Mom and Dad were away for the weekend, their three daughters (lovely daughters) had everything in readiness for the big surprise. Imagine coming home and finding your yard full of cars! It's enough to make you wonder what's going on around the ranch. 'Twas a bushel of fun. The day wasn't just what we planned in another department. Our White Sox split a double header in Milwaukee. Plans were to win two. Notice a difference in the way official scorers call plays these days. It used to be if a fielder didn't touch the ball it was called a hit. Last week we saw two errors called when scorers thought the infielders should have made the play. Found Ray Kuna and his wife a very gracious host and hostess as they served a packed house of diners last Friday night. The Kunas have taken over the Tomasello place in John- sburg and are working like all get out to draw crowds of bowlers and diners. Such en thusiasm (and hard work) should swing it. * SIGN-OFF THOUGHT: Our grandma had a name for persons who talked about others in a damaging way - Blatherskites ". , W-L 13-0 8-5 7-5 541 4-9 1-11 HILLTOP VOLLEYBALL The Hilltop mothers volleyball season will begin Thursday, Sept. 1 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Hilltop gym nasium. McHENRY 385-3120 v^T *** A PERFECT PITCH...is negotiated by Carol Cooney of McHenry on route to a third place finish in the First flight of the McHenry Women's Invitational Golf tournament. Mrs. Cooney fired a 186 in the twfrday event, held at the McHenry Country club. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD DIVOT DOLLS M.C.C. Last Thursday and Friday (18 and 19) brought two ex citing days of Women's amateur golf to McHenry Country club as 147 women from various areas in the midwest participated in the third annual McHenry Women's Invitational. Shooting an 81 the first day and 75 the second for a total 156, Coreen Martin from Mission Hills walked off with the beautiful champion's trophy. Medalist the first day was Kay Kowell of Sunset Valley in Highland Park with an 80. The former decathlon and professional softball player with a handicap of 6 and with only, three years' golfing ex- pertatce dropped to seventh place the second day; however, with more tournament ex perience Kay promises to be the gal to set and break records in the future. Out of the large field of contestants the McHenry ladies made a fine showing for their club and for themselves For the first day Lil Michels took low net of 72 in the second flight while Anna Johnson and Liz Nolan tied for low net of 73 in third flight. Lil Michels also had low putts the first day with 25 in her flight, while Nancy Wilkins in third flight had 25 putts and Lou Rods in fourth flight had 29 putts. In the first day contest of closest to the pin on No. 18 again it was the name of Lil Michels that came to the fore when she put her drive 11'4" from the pin in second flight play. In fourth flight another local gal, Carla Wright, came closest with a measurement of 7'2". In third flight Ann Rankin of Thorngate beat out Liz Nolan of McHenry with a measuremetn of 2'10". Until Ann's drive (the last in third flight) Liz was holding with a measurement of 7'3". , Final results for the two-day play found our own Carol Cooney taking third low gross of 186 in first flight and Judy Smithson with a total of 190 hanging in there for sixth place in the same flight. In second flight Alvina Yopp took second place with 192 and Lil Michels took fourth with COME ON. GET IN THERE...is what Lil Michels seems to be saying to her ball, which came to rest on lip of cop on fifth green during the McHenry Women's Invitational Golf tournament, held last week at the McHenry Country club. This time, the hall did not heed her wishes, and Mrs. Michels had to settle for a bogey 6 on the par five hole. Fortunately, enough putts dropped for her during the two-day tournament for her to finish fourth in Flight 2, with a 96* hole total of 195. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD 195. In third flight Nancy Wilkins and Anna Johnson tied for second place with 200 while Lou Roels was in at seventh with 207 and Liz Nolan at eighth with 208. McHenry showing in fourth flight had Lavverne Harpling with 213 in third place and Maisie Stamer trith 216 for fifth place. The coveted low net over the entire field, second only to shooting low gross for the championship in prestige, was shot by McHenry's Anna Johnson. Carrying a handicap of 26, Anna had a 99-101 for a total of 200 which netted her a 148 for the two days. Congratualtions, Anna! All of McHenry is proud of you. The entrants from Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Illinois found the McHenry course interesting and challenging and the hosts warm and friendly and promise to return next year.
