Dial-A-Prayer, 385-1234 by Ann Rossell - Shock Treatments for Rooms Sometimes a plain old simple room needs a shock treatment to bring it up to date and give it a lively look. In vogue today is the bathroom transforma tion. Some other rooms could stand a bit of stark drama as well: a gameroom-party room, perhaps even a bedroom. Obviously some areas in the home are for concentration, work, some conducive to quiet relaxation, and I would never suggest going against this in trinsic atmosphere. But rooms lived in intermittently can add exciting variety to your deco rating with exuberant wallcov erings full-blown with vital col ors, unique designs and tex tures. What a surprise when you open the door to a small bath room and a rush of huge red poppies on a pitch black ground greet you! This strong impres sion, which incidentally cov ered the ceiling too, is a classic example of "The Principle of Calculated Distraction." The same old, tired fixtures were ever present, but no longer were they that obvious. / Bold three-hue stripes, mated with companion stripes, can make a gameroom more fun for children of all ages. Another bright idea teenagers favor: graphic, checkered designs in primary colors. Sophisticated entertaining calls for sparkle. A silvery met- alsmith foil or ethereal silver swirls would give a Twenty- first Century look when it cov ers ceiling and walls. Glass and chrome furniture would surely complete the picture! Bedrooms, too, can have mov ie star glamour, exotic and en ticing, glittering and showy. There's nothing like a change of mood in a personal room once in awhile. When you tire of it, just strip off the wallcov ering. Why not shock up your house with a stunning treatment for a tired room? You'll be thrilled! 4tewr 00MEMN6 PUB Rt 31 & Ringwood Road (4 Miles North of McHenry) SANDWICHES AND PIZZA 'A TOUCH OF THE UWDDOWN UNDER11 Rain war Can y Will Fmrv Performance Proper care of rainwear will preserve its appearance and performance. To determine what care is appropriate for your rainwear, study the garment care label, says Nancy Moore, McHenry county Extension adviser. Always follow the care label directions closely. The suggested care method may call for cleaning the garment surface with a damp cloth. When the label says "hand wash only," do not put the garment in a washing machine. The machine agitation may pull the seams apart; lining seams are particularly vulnerable. If the care instructions suggest the use of warm water, do not use hot water. High water temperature may cause excessive shrinkage, says Mrs. Moore. When the label indicates that the garment should be l%un-' remember that rinsing V / \.. • ... / is as important as washing. A water-repellent garment must be thoroughly rinsed. If detergent remains in the fabric, water repellency is decreased. It has also been found that ironing some water-repellent finished fabrics with a "cool" iron will improve the per formance of tlie finish. You can 'expect water- repellent finishes that are durable to withstand both dry. cleaning and laundering. Nondurable finishes, on the other hand, are removed by laundering and dry cleaning. PAGE 11 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 1977 But no water-repellent finish will last forever. It will even tually have to be reapplied. A dry-cleaning service can reapply the finish. You also can refurnish the water-repellent characteristic of rainwear by applying one of the spray-type finishes at home. If you give your rainwear proper care, you can expect it to look smart and to keep you dry, says Mrs. Moore. "Every adult needs a child to teach; it's the way adults learn." , / -Frahk A.
