A Good MS PRO HARI 1228 N. GREEN ST McHENRY, ILL. 3850098 Football Preview (Continued from page 6) Crown No one at Crown high school talks about 1976. That's because, last year, the Vikings did not win a football game on any (varsity, Junior varsity, sophomore, freshman) level. _ There is, literally, no where to go but "up", and Crown coach Bill Owen is confident his team can chalk up a few victories this time out. His optimism is based on having nine starters returning, plus a positive mental attitude in practice thus far. "What's past is past," he said. "This is an entirely different group than we had last year, even though some of the same players are here. The kids think they can do it, and if everything falls into piace... "Of course, we always have depth problems (36 players this year), and if we have some key kids hurt, that's it." Some of the players Owen can't afford to lose include tailback David Ledford, who gained more than 500 yards on the ground as a junior, and quarterback Bill Gage, who lettered on defense last jseason. That coveted first victory for Crown should come in either of the first two weeks, when the Vikings play Walther Lutheran, and Waubonsie Valley. If they don't win there, it could be another longggggg season for Owen. Rusty Nail Outlasts St. Regis In 22-14 Slugfest Libejtyville The only North Suburban conference team to defeat Zion-Benton last year, is again considered a legitimate contender for the title. heid coach Dale Christensen is altering his seventh year at Libertyville, and he holds a career 2943 mark. The Wildcats were 7-2 in 1976, and return several letter winnerb, which should make them contenders again. On the negative side, the schedule has Libertyville playing at North Chicago, Crystal Lake, Zion-Benton, and Lake Forest, a factor which could hamper the Wildcats' chances for a league title. How True One trouble with the world today is that there are too many people in it who are willing to put in their oars but not willing to row. -Sentinel, Knoxville. Game three of the 1977 championship playoffs saw both contenders combine for 36 runs, 37 hits, 12 base on balls, and 3 base on errors. As the 'battlefield' cleared after the final out Rusty Nail was on top 22-14. The victory gives Rusty Nail a two game to one ad vantage over St. Regis in the best of five series. If St. Regis can come back to take playoff, game four on Monday evening the showdown will be played on Wednesday, Aug. 31. Otherwise a Nail win gives them the trophy! St. Regis Strikes First Blow St. Regis opened theslugfeSt with three runs in the first. Gary Connell hit that first pitch for a base hit to center and both DeCicco's followed with singles, Irish getting a RBI. Don Prazak sacrificed to left for run two 'and Hawk McQueeney singled in a third run. Poor base running cost Regis when McQueeney was nailed at second on a throw from left after his single. Matt Oik, who had walked earlier, attempted to score from third on the same play but Elliott's accurate throw had him by 'a mile'. The Nail came right back to score six runs of their own in a preview to the kind of a game this would be. The first seven batters readied base safely on 6 hits and a walk. The key hit was a bases loaded double by Bill Huff tying the score. Ray Thelen drove in Huff with a base hit while John Connell scored on a double play and Greg Johnson singled in Thelen. St Regis failed to score in the second as they left the bases loaded. The winners scored twice in their half of the inning on a John Connell sacrifice fly and an error making the score 8-3. Sundby Leads All Hitters • Dave Sundby singled to open the inning, his first of three hits in the game. Sundby leads all hitters with a .789 average in the three games, batting 10 for 13. Adding 7 for 8 in the semifinals, Sundby shows 17 hits in 21 at bats for a hefty .810 batting average! Elliott, and Sundby scored Elliott with a long triple to the power alley in right center. Rusty Nail led after three by a 10-5 score. St. Regis Retakes Lead The fifth inning saw St. Regis erupt for eight runs as the lead exchanged hands. Eleven: batters went to the plate as six hit safely, plus a walk and an error. Hawk McQueeney had a bases loaded single driving in two runs. Decker doubled in a run and Joe Lafontaine singled in one more. The big hit was a three run blast to right by Johfi DeCicco putting Regis out in front 13-10. The bottom half of the inning was to prove the Rusty NaU wanted this game more than their opponents. They sent ten batters of their own to the plate and when the inning ended the winners were in front to stay. Jones' Triple Begins 7-Run Outburst Larry Jones tripled down the line to lead off the inning and scored on Greg Johnson's base hit. A1 Elliott drove in two more with a bases loaded single. After a force play which scored a run John Connell smashed a long homerun to left center good for three runs. Two of the game's six base on balls given to Rusty Nail contributed in the seven run inning. The Nail had four hits as they moved in from 17-14. St. Regis failed to score in the sixth but the Nail continued their slugging ways with five more runs in the bottom of the inning. A pair of walks and a double by John Hiller sewed one run. A1 Elliott tripled in two runs and Dave Sundby followed with a run scoring double.* Bill Huff added the finishing touch with a single, scoring Sundby. The final inning saw Regis mount a brief rally which Cell well short of the mark. Mike Conway hit a pinch single after Decker walked but a throw to third cut down Decker. P*e Smith singled and aftpr Connell lined to Huff, John DeCicco singled in' Jerry Brodin who was running for Conway. Defensive Highlights Defensively the Rusty Nail's A1 Elliott made a nice grab of fl_ T .»*. kMj as the entire series, the strong arm of St. Regis centerfielder Don Prazak was in action holding those leading base runners from taking one more base. 1 _ ; Sowers (2), Johnson, Hiller (2). Sacrifice Fly: Prazak, J. Connell. SIDELIGHTS The commissioner of the 12- Inch League began an investigation into the mysterious trip of JohnHiller as he attempted to take first base after a base on balls in the first. Later Hiller blamed worn spikes for the fall. . Rustv Nail is batting .453 in PAGE 7 -PLAINDEALER- WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 31. 1977 Public Invited To See Church Sponsored Film ST. Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family service and Community Mental Health center staff. This article is "Coping-Special Education.") Children today have an op portunity for quality education that isunsurpaseod. Formerly, students with special problems were forced into the traditional classroom for no reason other than there were no facilities or trained staff to deal with children with learning dif ficulties. Now there is an opportunity for children who are retarded, brain damaged, perceptaully handicapped, with reading or mathematic learning han dicaps, behavioral or ad justment problems to receive specialized, professional at tention in a program specific to their individual needs. In a large majority of cases, an individual problem can be corrected and the child can move back into a regular curriculum. Many parents feel somewhat reluctant to agree to placement in a "special" class, due to stigma sometimes attached special placement. It is important, however, to ha aftle to admit to a problem shook it exist. Counselors are availal If in the school to explain t le particular program in detill. Once an understanding of I ie basic techniques are «n- derstood by parent apd child, most of the prehensions about help is relieved. It is also important remember that > "special education" is qi not a *"^"1 to remove the child "regular" classes. Ibe skills H the profi educator in his program are best that are available. The Marian match kicks off what could be a banner year for the Warrior golf team, with head coach Charles "Chuck" Cuda blessed with a wealth of experienced performers from last year's 14-2 team. - "We do have a very strong nucleus coming back," Cuda said. "Potentially, we can have a very fine season." Leading the way for the coming season are senior lettermen Jim Buenzli, .Tim Byers, Phil Kent, Tom Pep ping, Robert Lunkenheimer, and Ron Pepping. Also returning is junior Steve Kivley, and Cuda noted that juniors Pat Becker and Bill Lang, along with sophomore A1 Ekroth, have performed well in preseason practices.* "All of them are capable of shooting in the 70s," the coach noted. Seven golfers play in each match, meaning that Cuda has °nough depth to give some of his players a day of rest without losing the overall team ef fectiveness. That will crane in handy because the Warrior golf schedule includes fifteen matches, two invitational tournaments, a conference tourney, and a state district meet, all in a six-week period. During one five day period in mid-September, McHenry will play at North Chicago, host Woodstock, play Libertyville, and participate in the Crown Invitational tournament. , McHenry competes in the North Suburban conference. One slight advantage the Warriors might have in battling to win a conference title is that the conference meet will be played on* the local course. Also, the state district meet will be held in McHenry. Cuda predicted that Crystal Lake and Lake Forest will be the teams to beat in the race for conference honors. • Marian's schedule is not as extensive, but the Hurricanes will face many strong teams. Marian is a member of the West Suburban Catholic con ference, and like McHenry, plays its home matches at the McHenry Country club. After facing McHenry, Marian golfers will next see action Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Cary-Grove. Following the Marian match, McHenry will play at Grant Tuesday, Sept. 6, and play at Antioch Sept. 8.
