Also, since it involves the availability of a basic neces sity, this annual decision can help shape far-reaching effects on consumers. It is the type of decision made in farm fields that can be felt by families every where. Spartan Simplicity Book Agent (to farmer)- "You ought to buy an encyclo pedia, now that your boy is going to school." Farmer-"Not on your life. Let him walk, the same as I did." Cars May Run On Gas With Alcohol Washington is beginning to funnel tax money into building distilleries and pro moting the use of alcohol-- as an automotive fuel. Some states have been looking at the possibilities for a number of years. Spurring the research are worries about future possible shortages of crude oil to pro duce gasoline and about the air pollution caused by gaso line. A car burns alcohol more completely, producing less of an emission problem. ^ Current production-line automobiles can use a blend of gasoline and alcohol with out any engine modification apart from a possible carbu retor adjustment. Most ex periments are done with a mix of 90 per cent gas and 10 per cent alcohol, usually a half-and-half mix of grain alcohol and wood alcohol. But rebuilding an engine to take even a 100 per cent alco hol is a relatively inexpensive job, perhaps costing under $100. The problem is that right now, alcohol is more ex pensive than gasoline, cost ing around $1.10 even if new distilleries were put up to make it in quantity. And the blend of grain and wood alco hol gives only 60 per cent of the energy that the same amount of gasoline will pro vide. Nebraska is trying to get on top of the economic prob lems by giving a five-cent-a- gallon tax credit for auto fuel with 10 per cent alcohol--a reduction that should just about equal the extra cost of the alcohol. Nebraska has been running tests on ve hicles fueled with an alco- ho^mix since 1971, and state officials say they get slightly better mileage than with un leaded gas and that they havt; run into no engine problems. Similar tests in Virginia, however, have according to The Washington Post pro duced less promising results. Using four pairs of identical mileage,' that the mixture tended to separate in cold weatfeer, causing more running prob lems. § CONSUMER GUIDELINES ---tmcw i»e THE iaostt ENtRM Conserving Energy When attempting to cut down on your energy use, remember that only five appliances account for the maiority of electricity used in the home --- the range/oven, refrigerator, water heater, air conditioner and clothes dryer.
