SEPTEMBER #. 1377 I HERE AND THERE IN BUSINESS - tej • *•- > . u * Credit Association • 300< Farm Couples Plan [for 44th Annual Meeting 1 Election of two directors and reports by officers will be among business matters wtyrn an anticipated 300 farmers arid their wives meet at Harvard Wednesday evening, Sept. 14, for the Northeast Illinois Production Credit association's forty-fifth annual meeting. Jack Lee, named president of this farmer-owned cooperative two months ago, said reser vations should be made through the PC A office in Woodstock. Alan Ainger, Harvard farmer who is chairman of the board, will presid^ during the business meeting in the Harvard Moose lodge. The meeting is called for 7:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 7 p.m. The terms of two directors expire and both men are standing for re-election: Ray Karlson, Garden Prairie, and Marvin Kruckenberg, Mun- delein. The nominating committee has nominated two candidates for each of the two vacancies. Karlson and Glenn G. Frank, 49, Cherry Valley, are nominees to represent the Boone county area. Kruckenberg and Peter Tekampe, 35, Grayslake, are the Lake county area nominees. In addition a nominating committee is to be elected, and two candidates from the three counties that comprise the Northeast Illinois PCA have been determinedl^McHenry county-William Becker, Crystal Lake, and Edward Gourley, Woodstock; Boone county-Albert Blachford, Capron, and Arthur Sell, Belvidere; Lake county-Lyle Matthews, McHenry, and George White, Mundelein. All four director nominees are long-time borrowers at the PCA, using this cooperative as a major source of short-term loans to finance the yearly farming operation. Shorter- term loans usually are associated with such purposes as financing cattle and other livestock, fertilizer, fuel and herbicides needed to plant in tht spring, and harvesting expenses necessary in the fall. that are called frequently and that are needed most by the average citizen, according to external sources such as social agencies and community organizations. The Reuben H. Donnelley corporation, which distributes the telephone directory under contract to Illinois Bell, will no longer pick up old books when delivering new ones, according to Jozwiak. Several factors were in volved, including increased costs, as reasons for discon tinuing the pickups. These reasons include the inac cessibility of customers, the amount of time involved in picking up directories, and the uncertainties of the waste paper market. Citing the fact that Illinois Bell is the only Bell system company in the country which was still picking up old directories, Jozwiak said delivery personnel, however, will accept old books if the customer requests. "But, we are urging sub scribers to dispose of the directories on their own," he emphasized. Illinois Bell reports that it had a net loss of $40,000 in its pickup and salvage operations in 1976. The company stated that it was able to salvage only 5,000 to 6,000 tons of the 25,000 tons of directories it had printed. "Security-consciousness had reduced directory pickups," Jozwiak said. "Many people will no longer open their doors to strangers." Telephone directories are printed on an opaque, simple, thin paper, which can be recycled only into "soft goods"- -napkins, tissues, toilet paper. The paper is made from pulp which comes from trees grown especially for that purpose on huge commercial "tree farms." It does not involve use of hardwood trees which are used in construction, furniture and lasting products. 1 I SERVICE NEWS Coast Guard Promotion For H.D. Vycital Coast Guard Chief Damage Control H.D. You guessed it! It's the telephone book, and delivery to approximately 19,000 McHenry area telephone customers will start Monday, Sept. 12, ac cording to Illinois Bell manager, Stan Jozwiak. Customers who have not received their new directory by Sept. 27, should call their Illinois Bell business office at 385-9981 and delivery will be arranged. Additional direc tories may also be obtained through the business office. Appropriately, the new directory has a large "HELLO" and hundreds of people printed on the cover. The "HELLO" message relates to people and the customary greeting they associate with the telephone. Something new has been added to many Illinois Bell directories this year to make them even more useful. It's called a Helpful Number list and appears in the Call-Guide (how-to) section of the direc tory. The lists are compiled on the basis of providing the greatest benefit to the greatest number of customers served by the directory.
