Three basic types are currently on the market, two of which are highly recommended. In the ion dumber detector. smoke or combustion particles reduce an electrical flow and set off the alarm. The photo-electric detector has a sensor which activates an alarm when smoke deflects a light beam in a sensing chamber. Detectors may operate through connection to the existing home electrical system or by battery. In most house fires, the electrical current does not fail before the detector sounds its alarm. Bat teries in all detectors should be changed at least once a year, sometimes more often. If your house has more than one level, you may need more than one detector. As a minimum requirement, one detector should be placed in the area where your family will be sleeping. It should be installed on the ceiling, several feet from each bedroom door. Detectors usually range in price from $20 to $200, depending on the model and features provided. Homeowners should be able to purchase one adequate for their needs for approximately $40 • • • * There are those who deny the greatness of the Bible but they have not produced a greater book. Plocher, McHenry county Extension adviser. Deadline for enrolling is Sept. 9. The five-day workshop is designed for persons with little or no experience and who wish to become more competent in preparing income tax returns for others. An enrollment fee covers the cost of teaching materials and student work books. University of Illinois staff will teach the workshop via the Cooperative Extension service TeleNet system, says Plocher. This is a telephone network with two-way communication that enables students at each of the stations to hear and talk with the workshop instructors. The workshop for interested McHenry county residents will be held Oct. 19,21,24,26 and 28, 1977 at the Extension office in Woodstock. Additional in formation and enrollment forms may be obtained at the McHenry county Extension office at 11909 McConnell road, Woodstock.
