HELPING PAWS ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION P. O. Bo* 205 • Crystal Lake, Illinois 60014 • (815) 459-2641 by EstolU Atw«ll - Friendly Utile Buttons - it's her last chance. She is spayed, a white and black Terrier mix. Housebroken, up to date on all shots, ier favorite trick is sitting up. Call 459-2641 from 10 to 2, Monday through Saturday. Emergency animal problems -arise at unexpected times and slaces. And, tragically may 4)ccur in areas with no 'established animal welfare 'roups to assist. A vacationing :ouple (she is a Helping Paws worker) were driving along a winding back road near Galena, 111., when they noticed a tiny kitten half way up a gravel hill. They turned around to get a better look wondering if it was stuck, hurt, or just awaiting a passing ifiouse. The kitten was crying pitifully and unable to see from eyes swollen twice their normal size and crusted with pus. The HP worker backed away as she knew if she rescued it she might be passing along the dreaded distemper virus which can cling to clothes, to her own cats back home. The virus will live 9' months, sometimes longer, on or in or near anything with which the infected animal has had contact. Metal cages that are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected may be used again but other carrying cates must be destroyed. Even immunity vaccine injections may not prevent this contagion. They left the scene reluc tantly as it was approaching nighttime, they were in un familiar territory, they had nothing in their car which would serve as a carrying cage or as protection from direct contact with the kitten,, and they had a vacation ap pointment to keep. When they arrive*! at the mountaintop lodge which was. their destination the first question they asked the clerk was "Where is your local humane society?" "Our what?" replied the puzzled clerk who knew of no such agency. Using the phone book they made a number of calls. The local police would not even consider such a rescue, there was no animal control center, the vet was out and would not be back until late that night, and the local humane society consisted of one individual who had too many cats which ran loose and no garage or out building to keep a sick animal. Finally settled in their room the HP worker began to cry. She couldn't get her mind off that pitiful kitten. Then she had an idea. They would ask the clerk for a box, line it with newspapers for warmth, go back and get the kitten off the hill, and take it to the vet and leave it there until he got back. She called the nurse assistant once more, gave her name, address where she would ac cept billing for his service, and told her they would leave the kitten outside his office in a protected box. After doing this the couple returned to their vacation spot, too late for dinner but with some peace of mind concerning the kitten. The following morning they called the vet. He had gotten the kitten but had not yet examined it. That af ternoon they drove to the vet's as just in case the kitten 7 be saved they planned to take! home and try to find a home for it. But the nurse explained that it was distemper and the kitten had to be destroyed. Here in McHenry county police would have, referred a call of this nature to Animal Control center or to Helping Paws for rescue action. Nice to ^ know we have these resources.
