We liked the Conover, Wis., area so much we went back for another week. Fall has come early to the north woods and the colors are breathtaking. We visited our daughter and son-in- law Julie and Ralph Rosinski and were graciously en tertained by Ann and Leo Rosinski, proprietors of Villa Maria in Land O'Lakes, Wis. It was a pleasant week of fishing, relaxing and visiting friends. Now to bring you up to date on the happenings in the area in my absence. .School bells rang out Tuesday, Sept. 6 announcing the opening of the 77-78 school year. With all the little "angels" back in school, Mom can get caught up on her reading and things she didn't have time for in the hectic summer. WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL Starting Thursday, Sept. 15, at |> m., the women's volleyball games will resume. (This tor women 18 years or dder). The "girls" play at the Bush elementary school gym in Johnsburg. Come as you please, jeans, shorts, whatever. But be sure you have gym shoes as street shoes are not allowed on the gym floor. So keep fit and have a good time doing so. Join the volleyball team "for women only." SKATEBOARD ACCIDENT Friends of Ruth Pflug of 1412 Bayview wish her a speedy recovery. Ruth missed opening day of school due to a skateboard mishap Sunday. She's confined with a broken ankle. Friends hope you're soon on the mend and can join your classmates. NEW POLICE OFFICER The village of Sunnyside has appointed a new female police Officer. On Sept. 1,1977, Donna V. Mitchell of 4017 WUmot road was duly sworn in as the fifth member of the Sunnyside police force. v LATE REPORT The Pistakee Highlands Parade on Wheels held recently was a huge success. Dan Felix who coordinated the parade was overwhelmed by the turnout. Over 100 bikes were registered and over ninety turned out for the parade. The entrants who par ticipated came with bikes done in such splendor and imagination that the judges had a hard time deciding winners. Parade watchers became sc enthused that an additional $30 was donated on the spot to create more prizes. First prize of a 10-speed bike went to Holly Wilkinson. Holly is 3 years old and will have to grow a bit before she can ride her prize bike. Second prize, another bike, went to Paul Felix. Third prize of $25 went to Gail Wrobluski. There were also four prizes of $10 each and five of $5 each. At the picnic following the parade, F.T. Wolfson won a T.V., and Willie yan Camp of Evanston, a C.B. iradio and Katherine Connery of Chicago, a stereo. GHOSTS, GOBLINS Ghosts, goblins and witches will be coming to Pistakee Highlands soon. The Highlands are planning a haunted house to beheld at the community house for Halloween. It will be open Friday to Monday Oct. 28 to 31. There'll be prizes, surprises and free treats. Mark you calendar and plan to see the haunted house on one of the four days. Hours will be 4 p.m. to 12 p.m. WOMEN'S AUXILIARY At the September meeting of the village of Sunnyside the forming of the Women's auxiliary was approved by the board of trustees. There are a few details to iron out and those of you who expressed an in terest in joining will be notified of the first meeting. Women from Sunnyside Estates and Pistakee Terrace who have called to say they would like to become members will be more than welcome. One of the projects we have in mind for the club is a recipe book. So ladies, send me your favorite recipe, Betty Messer, 1405 Bayview lane, McHenry. Or you can drop it off at the house. We'll welcome recipes from ladies outside the village, too. I know McHenry has many good cooks out among our many readers. If you'd like to see your favorite recipe in a local cookbook be sure to send it to me. REMINDERS The police department has again asked that' I remind people about getting house numbers posted on your house. Once again I am stressing that emergency <vehiclef lose valuable time when they have to search for a house because there are no numbers. It can be the difference between life and death for an emergency vehicle rescue squad, fire department or police. Please get those house numbers out where they can be seen. Police Chief Earl Kramer has impounded some of the bikes that were found when a bicycle theft ring was broken early this summer. If you are missing a bike please contact Chief Kramer, 385-3250. KIWANIS CLUB Sue Kuziel of the Wonder Lake Woman's club was a guest at the Aug. 29 meeting of the Wonder Lake Kiwanis club. Sue spoke about the successful swim program held this summer at the Wonder Lake beaches. Over 200 children were taught to swim, twenty of them qualifying for life saving and one being an adult. All of the instructors were from the lake area. The swim program is a joint effort of the Woman's club and the Kiwanis. It is one of the many programs for which the Kiwanis club of Wonder Lake uses the money that they collect at peanut time. Friday morning, Sept. 30, will be this year's Kiwanis Peanut day and members will be out on the corners of Wonder Lake selling peanuts. Past Lieutenant Governor Bob Howe was at the meeting and told about the I.I. District convention that was held at the Drake hotel in Chicago with over 1,000 registering. He brought a copy of the con vention daily to report to members on the activities of the convention. Doctor Jones won the battle axe award. At the Aug. 22, Kiwanis meeting, the new Lieutenant Governor elect, Fred W. Diesel of the Crystal Lake club, was present for an unofficial visit. There was an inter club with four Barrington Kiwanis members welcomed, Hon Meyers, Tom Askelson, Ken Mundy and Bob Schwartz. T.P. Mathews won the battle axe award but was not there to claim it. BABY SHOWER Mrs. Robert (Claudia) Pitts was guest of honor at a surprise baby shower at the home of Debbie Johnson Thursday, Sept. 1. Assisting Debbie as hostess were Anne Rodenkirch, Joan Freund and Judee Cristy. An additional surprise for Claudia was the presence of her mother-in-law, Mrs. Jane Pitts, who came to Wonder Lake just for the evening from her home in Oak Park. Claudia's friends presented her with many lovely gifts for her expected baby. Refresh ments of punch, a cake beautifully decorate* by Anne Rodenkirch, cookies and coffee were served. BIRTHAYS Happy birthdays to Roger Stilling, Larry Goulet ana Waltedne O'Brien, all Sept. 15. Happy birthday to our own Kevin Huff, who will be ten years old Sept. 16. Happy birth day to Jack Weber Sept. 17. SUBDIVISION PARTY "I wondered why somebody didn't do something...then I realized that I was some body." so says this anonymous quotation that seems to have been taken to heart by three couples in Oakwood Shores, Frank and Audrey Jackson, Larry and Noreen Schmitt and Joe and Peggy Liggett. For years, many of us have talked about having a sub division party and Anally, these folks turned the idea into reality. On Sunday, Sept. 4, tables and a volleyball court were put up on an empty lot at the subdivision entrance and a large sign gaily greeted everyone, saying, "Welcome to Oakwood Shores First Annual Subdivision Picnic." Games, volleyball and a treasure hunt for the little ones were a fun part of the day. With Chef Frank Jackson at the grill, hot dogs were barbecued and the table full of potluck dishes provided everyone with a full tummy. The half barrel of beer located in the back of Liggett's van (and courtesy of the three host couples) was a favorite meeting spot for many. Threatening rain showers held off until everyone had eaten and then most folks stayed, some a little damp, and those who were not were taken care of with some water-filled balloons. About 100 people were at the picnic to greet old neighbors, meet newcomers and share a large slice of Gemutlichkeit. HAPPINESS IS ... Happiness is....fresh peach shortcake with whipped cream.
