/ V I PAGE 6 - PLA1NDEAI FR. WEDNESDAY. SEPTEMBER 14. Ml It Was 27-7, But Warriors Can't 'Kick9 About A BRIGHT MOMENT. 48-yard kickoff return idown to the Bovlan .for Warrior fane Friday night came on this by Bill Goddin. Hie ran brought the hall 37-yard line. However, from there, the McHenry offense could not take the ball in for a score. Boylan won the contest 27-7 in the season opener for both teams. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD It is common on all levels of football for a team's defensive unit to be superior to its offensive unit in the first game of the season. That was the case last Friday night, when McHenry opened its season against Rockford Boy lan. Both defenses completely shut^>ff the offenses, with the Warrior defense playing especially well. So why the twenty-point (27-7) loss? It's difficult enougif for a defensive unit to hold the opposition when it only gets three plays rest before the offense has to punt the ball away. But the situation becomes impossible when the punting and kickoff teams continually give the opposition outstanding field position. It was the failure of the Warrior 'special' teams which resulted in the lopsided score and did injustice to a courageous defensive effort. Three times Boylan scored a touchdown immediately after a McHenry punt, or attempted punt, with the winners only having to drive 3, 36, and 47 yards for the three scores. The fourth Titan touchdown was credited against the kicking team, when Don Reed i returned a kickoff 90 yards for the final score, after McHenry had posted its only points on the board early in the fourth quarter. Reed's return clinched the game just after the Warriors, led by junior quarterback Pete Prust, appeared ready to make a game of it. Prust drove his team 41 yards for the score, hitting split end Marty Nuss with three passes during the drive, including a five- yarder for the score with 8:59 remaining in the game. The TD brought the Warriors to within 20-7, and with the inspired play of the defensive unit, the possibility of a miracle rally was not altogether remote. Reed, however, snuffed out any hope for a comeback with his return of the ensuing kickoff. McHenry gave an indication of things to come on its first possession of the game. After the defense recovered a fumble on the Boylan 35-yard line, three plays netted nothing and a bad snap on an attempted punt resulted in Mike Tollifson being nailed for an 11-yard loss. That first miscue didn't lead to a score, but on its second offensive possession, when McHenry had to punt from its own 14 yard line, Prust, who was punting, dropped the center snap and was smothered on the Warrior three. , From there it took just two dives into the line by Brian Donnelli to put Boylan on top 7-0. McHenry, which didn't gain a first down via the run or pass during the first half, continued to have trouble punting, including one boot under heavy pressure that went for zero yards. Early in the second period, a Warrior punt was returned fourteen yards, to the McHenry 36-yard line. Donnelli carried three times down to the fourteen, and after a play lost a yard, shifty EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR Hornets Hammer Hurricanes 27-6 "Sonny" Katzenburg, former Richmond athlete, rtioned to tell about a big get together planned for Sunday, Oct. 2. The Warriors faced a strong opponent, Rockford Boylan, for their first game and were outclassed 27 to 7. This was a non-conference game and one that may have been beneficial to our Warriors. They must have learned things that you don't get in practice. John Bauer of Woodlawn Park saw the Warrior game. Some of us remember John as a great man in the line for'Mini teams. A big fellow! Dick Rabbitt was at the mike again and enjoyed a new sound system that comes through loud and clear . _ Sitting beside Dick and his pipe is a great way to clear your sinus. Think he got that pipe from Dave Kent. Coach Bill Day took his jacket off as soon as the game started. He must have warmed up just thinking of the game. For a fellow of his size, Tim Cornwell came through real good in singing the National Anthem and later announcing the half time show. Scott Anderson strutted as all good drum majors should -- and the band played on. "Our major concern is with our lack of consistency. On one play, we have eleven guys working as a Unit, and on the next play, ten of them break down." It was the lack of consistency, according to head coach Tom Parker, which proved costly to Marian Saturday, as the Hurricanes lost their season opener 27-6 to Harvard. Marian returns to action Friday night with a game at Marengo. Saturday's chsappointing loss came despite approximately 275 yards in total offense gained by the Hurricanes. Parka: noted that, last year, that much yardage would be enough to win the game. Saturday however, it was only good for one score, a 69-yard pass from quarterback Jim Ringness to Kurt Parker. Otherwise, although the Hurricanes moved the ball, they could n«»v»r sustain a drive the length of the field. Dan Boland claims we saw one of the best and says to watch the Boylan record this year. «So -- if we had to lose, we can say we lost to a good football team. There will be a report on the recent Jack Perry Broadhead shoot by Treasurer, Earl Paddock. Irene Trumble Of course, Anderson's receivers were getting into open spaces against a Bear defense that couldn't cut the mustard. ... * I don't often agree with Bob Blake on sports, but will go along with his appraisal that the Bears played good football between the 20 yard lines. That had to be a record crowd that gathered in Johnsburg for the annual Saufen Und Spiel on Sunday. McHenry was well represented with many people. They had a long parade with plenty of, sirens and noise makers. Johnsburg is a mighty big little burg. Plenty of action in that group. didn't affect the Hornets, who scored on the ground and through the air. Harvard quarterback Kurt Strieker completed nine-of-ten passes attempted, and put points on the board with a pair of TD strikes to Dan Engle (18 and 22 yards). After a scoreless first period, Harvard opened up the scoring with Engle on the receiving end of Strieker's 18-yard pass. On their next possession, the Hornets pushed the lead to 14-0 on a 27-yard run by Roger Nelson. Marian then finally got things going with the Ringness-to-Parker touchdown, before Strieker and Engle combined again to make the halftime score 20-6. After a scoreless third period, Mark Haynes scored from 10- yards out to close out the scoring. Marian completed just four passes during the game, with piost of the incompletions occurring during the second half when, because of thescorp, the 'Canes were forced to throw. Parker promises that this coming week, the pass will be incorporated more into the offense, rathet* than tfevlbff to use the aerial attack out of desperation. Boylan's defense completely bottled up the McHenry offense during the first half, not allowing a first down either on a pass or a run. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD quarterback J.F. Gaziamo found tight end Mike Gehant for a 15- yard touchdown pass. Boylan carried the 14-0 lead into the locker room at halftime, and expanded it to 20-0 late in the third quarter. The score was set up by (what else?) a 27-yard punt return by Mayhall. That put the ball on the Warrior 47, and three plays later, Gaziamo dashed 30 yards for the score. That was all the scoring until Prust drove McHenry in for its sole score, and Reed returned the kickoff all the way. Statistically, the Warriors didn't fare much better than they did on the scoreboard. Counting 22 yards lost on the two punts that were never kicked and two times the quarteback was sacked attempting to pass, the ground game netted a minus-eight yards for the game. Hie defense, however, forced four Boylan turnovers, and except for the 30-yard TD dash by Gaziamo, didn't allow a run of more than 13 yards all night. .P McHenry returns to action this coming Saturday, playing at Maine North of DesPlaines. 'O9 For Just One Touchdown The number '0' kept popping up on the scoreboard over the weekend as the high school football season began with a series of non-conference games. In the North Suburban c o n f e r e n c e , b e s i d e s McHenry's 27-7 loss to Boylan, five of the other teams in the league also were defeated, four of them being shut out: Only conference favorite Crystal Lake, and sur prisingly strong Lake Forest were able to record wins on the first weekend of the season, with both clubs earning shutout victories. Crystal Lake drubbed Belvidere 34-0 while Lake Forest jolted Arlington 6 0. Otherwise, the weekend was a disaster for NSC teams, including Crown, which lost 30-0 to Walther L u t h e r a n . W a l t h e r Lutheran returned three punts for touchdowns against Crown. North Chicago was ex pected to demonstrate its lightening-quick offensive backfield against Buffalo Grove, but the Bisons slowed the Warhawks to a walk, winning 21-0. Zion-Benton was also blanked, 28-0 by Prospect, while Libertyville failed to score at Wheeling, losing 27-0. In the other NSC game,. Mundelein was beaten 14-7 by Conant. Teams in the West Suburban Catholic con ference didn't fare much better, with four other teams losing besides Marian. St. Edward was blanked 18-0 by Aurora Catholic, Immaculate Conception lost to Elmwood Park 24-15, Montini was beaten by Rich South 25-8, and Marmion lost by a field goal, 3-0, to Oswego. WSCC winners included St. Francis, 8-6 over Luther South, Driscoll, 23-20 over Maine North (McHenry's next foe), and Benet, which stopped Lisle 14-6. This coming Friday, Marian is at Marengo, Crystal Lake hosts Lake Park, and Crown plays at Waubonsie Valley. Saturday, McHenry is at Maine North, Zion-Benton plays Hillcrest, Mundelein hosts Carmel, Libertyville faces Deerfield, North Chicago battles St. Ed ward, and Lake Forest is at Oak Forest. J# A record number of bowlers greeted the opening of the 1977.- 1978 season. A total of 40 people grunted and groaned getting that first ball down the alley (or in the gutter), but a few must have been practicing. A. Boeldt (504) and W. Coari <486) shared honors for men's high series and M. Holm (214) and B. Ludwigsen (191) took bows for high games. The women were not to be outdone as E. Rogers (497) and B. Thompson (413) took high series and E. Rogers (180) doubled her awards and shared high game with L.'Estis (167). L. Coari soloed in picking off Splits (5-10). Prizes were awarded to M. Hauge (a crying towel for obvious reasons) and A. Boeldt (a turkey leg for most strikes). It was a good start with good people. K.
