STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD MCHS Golf Team Wins Three More The Mc Henry varsity golf team swept three matches this week, boosting its season record to SO. * Tuesday, the Warriors toppled Marian Central 156-169. after rolling over defending state champion Prospect, and Elgin Larkin Monday afternoon on the Mc Henry home course. i The Warriors were scheduled to play Grayslake at home Thursday, and will face Elgin at home Friday before traveling to North Chicago Monday afternoon. Possibly the biggest match of the week was Monday's meet against Prospect The 154-169 final score was indicative of McHenry's strength this i season, as the team literally burned up the soggy course. * The 154 total was also good | enough to defeat Larkin, which * fired a 177. ' In that double duel match. ; Tom Pepping and Tim Byers »each fired two-over-par 37s to * lead the way. They were joined * by Bob Ltmkenbeimer, Pat * Becker, and Jim Buenzli. who ' all carded 40s. Picked up the Sunday morning sport page and had to search for baseball news. Glad to see Wisconsin coming up in the football picture. Down at Champaign they seem to need help. Our State University should be more representative in the Big Ten. .&: You can change coaches, but he needs the horses. Notre Dame beat Pitt and all we read is how poor the Irish team is this year. School rules won't allow any hanky panky so a couple of star ball carriers were booted out The pros picked up the stars as Notre Dame searches for replacements. The season is young and some teams will get their growth in a few weeks. Other schools can satisfy their thirst for victories by building character. I Hear SPORTS EDITOR People are complaining about the rainy weather. Let's not kick. A long dry spell is Down at Kansas City they had 12 inches of rain and more is promised in the weather reports. It will take more than rain drops to dampen the spirit of the. Kansas City Royals. Winning eight games on the road didn't give teams like the Sox much to pick up ground. The Boston Red Sox are making life miserable for the millionaire club in New York. Everybody knows you can't buy friendship. It remains to be seen if you can buy a major league pennant. I must tell Larry Nimsgern about the new pitcher the Sox have coming up next year from some remote country The phenom's name is "Jet". Had one by the same name a few years ago, but they wouldn't let him out of his native land. Now, this fellow "Jet" throws so hard that the Sox are going to apply for rule changes when he is pitching. ' ' ' -- ' The plan is to use only two outfielders, then have a second catcher as a back-up man You can say you read it here first, Larry. , - HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Happy birthday to our friend Mayme Buss who is recovering in McHenry hospital from an accident. Old time residents of McHenry will remember Mayme as the zenith of ef ficiency in her office as City Collector for more years than many can remember. Those were do it yourself days. Not much to work with except a pencil and pad. •Mayme's sharp mind and quickness with figures enabled her to do the work of two people. In relating one little incident to Editor "Brenda", she said, "Write it". On one of my visits to Mayme's home where she conducted city business, she told me that sometimes coins fell on the floor when counting parking meter money. "If anything happens to me, I want you to know where I keep those coins", said our collector. She reached up and took down a little jar -- And, what do you suppose? There were three pennies in that jar! Mayme Buss didn't make much money for her great efforts, but had the interest of the city at heart at all times. An outstanding public ser vant - and a great lady. Coach Day Hopes To Warriors Prove Class Jn Maine North Game See BLASTING OUT! The varsity game starts at 8 p.m., while the sophomore contest will begin at 6 p.m. Parker believes his team is ready for a big effort Friday night. "We're mentally coming back (from Saturday's loss)," he said. "We hit real well in practice and I'm sure we'll be ready Friday night." The coach reported that no one was seriously injured last week, although starting right tackle Dan Schneider was shaken up a little. "He'll be ready Friday," Parker promised Parker indicated that the starting lineup would be the same as for the opener. That means Jim Ringness will again be at quarterback, throwing passes to Kurt Parker and Tony Huemann. Parker, a nephew of the coach, caught four passes last week, including a 69-yarder for the Hurricanes' only score. Tom Siciliano and Pat Fallow will again be the running backs, and both gained considerable yardage in the loss to Harvard. In fact. Marian moved the ball very well between the twentys last week, but couldn't main tain a drive all the way for the score. Parker expects his team to be more consistent Friday night. The Marian junior varsity tied the Harvard junior varsity 6-6 Monday afternoon. The coach felt the game was im portant in that it gave kids who didn't see a lot of action Saturday an opportunity to play. ' When we open the con ference season next week, we don't want any players who haven't had any playing time." the coach said. SPORTS COPY DOS AND D0NTS Please type or have Miwtborij type for yon. Late copy will probably be used in following issue. Thank Yau! "This game is very im portant to us. If we're going to prove we're a contender, we're going to have to show it Saturday." Those words were spoken by McHenry football coach Bill Day, and the significance of Saturday's contest at Maine North has not been lost on the players. They know, after watching films of last week's 27-7 loss to Rockford Boylan, just how close the game could have been if it weren't for a few errors. Day fully expects those errors to be corrected Satur day. Game time is 2 p.m., with the sophomore contest beginning at noon. The coach was extremely pleased with the work of the defensive unit last week, in cluding the play of Tim Hughes. The linebacker received special recognition from the coaching staff after he was in on twelve tackles, recovered two fumbles, and did a good job mi the punt team against Boy lan. The coaches have also discovered the reason why Boylan was able to break an occasional big gainer on the ground last week Day ex plained that the linebackers were doing quite a bit of stunting, and whit was hap pening was that when the defensive tackle rushed to the inside and the linebacker looped around to the outside, the linebacker was going one man too far on the outside. The result was that the Boylan runners were cutting inside, and gaining large chunks of yardage. But the major problem in McHenry's defeat last week was the continual breakdown of the special teams. Day ex plained just what went wrong. He said that the problem arose due to the fact that McHenry has two punters, left- footed Pete Prust, and right- footed Mike Tollifson. The blocking assignments are different depending on which one is punting. Tollifson was the punter on the first occasion, when a poor snap resulted in him not getting the ball off. Prust punted the remainder of the night, but the blockers did not adjust their assignments to accommodate the left-footed kicker. "We finally realized at halftime what was wrong," Day said. "In the second half, we had a couple of fifty-yard kicks." Should the Warriors make the minor adjustments Saturday, the score could be reversed from last week. Maine North also lost last week, losing 23-20 in overtime, to Driscoll. If there was an area of disappointment, it was with the way the offense fired off the line of scrimmage. But then. Day admitted that Boylan "was too quick for us. I don't think we're going to face a team that big and quick all year." Two players sustained in juries in last week's game, including defensive back Mark Rogers, who will be out three LADIES TUES.NITE BOWLING LEAGUE McHenry Rec. 9-13-77 Average or better: Nancy Peterson 154-415; Annette Joyce 376; Barb Hanson 396; Pat Ruemelin 189- 471; Sandy McClory 161-416; Pam Kozior 156-411; Wilma Aylward 142-385; Sweetie Koleno 440; Jo Rizzo 489; Betty weeks with a concussion. Of fensive lineman Ralph Guzman required six stitches in his hand as a result of Friday's game, and is status for Saturday is uncertain. Otherwise, the Warriors are healthy. Day did not indicate which quarterback, Prust or last week's starter Jeff Hurkes, will get the starting nod Saturday. Whoever calls the signals will again have Marty Deener and Mike Tollifson in the backfield, and Marty Nuss, Dave Pliner, and Mike Williams to throw to. This is the final preseason game in preparation for the conference season. But Day and his staff have found a way to look ahead and look back at the same time. "Our goal right now is to play Rockford Boylan again," he said. That, of course, is only possible if the two teams were to meet in the state playoffs, which in turn means that both teams would have to win conference titles. And if the Warriors are going to do THAT, they are going to have to start showing it Saturday.
