Meet The Athletes :".M<r>!: » Eta Pepping (golf) Barb Kami (tennis) Tim Hughes (football) This week's group of athletes are all "winners", with one being a member of the unbeaten golf team, another who played a key role in a football victory, and the third who was one-half of a winning doubles team in tennis. ' Ron Pepping Between attending school and his job as a sales clerk at a local business, Ron Pepping has managed to find the time to become one of the stalwarts on McHenry's powerful varsity golf team. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pepping is in the midst of his second year of varsity golf, having lettered last year. He says he became interested in golf because his friends were playing it, and hopes to play on a golf team in college. Besides playing golf, Ron plans to study accounting in college, although he does not yet know which college he will attend. ^ He enjoys playing tennis in his spare time, although that sport has to be put aside while he is helping to lead the Warrior golf team, hopefully to a conference title. Barb Kuna Another athlete who plans on studying business and accounting in college is Barb Kuna. The daughter erf Mr. and Mrs. J. Raymond Kuna is a member of the varsity tennis team. She played No. 1 singles in the teams first match, but a recurring back problem forced her to play doubles last week. As for why she is interested in becoming a businesswoman, Barb explained that she has had a couple of jobs which involved financial transactions, and also works for her parents at a local bowling alley. The lifetime resident of McHenry enjoys exercising and jogging, and says she got interested in tennis because her brother and sister were always playing. This is ho* third year on the varsity tennis squad. Tim Hughes When oppoeong football teams look across the line of scrimmage at the McHenry defensive unit, they may think they are seeing 'double*. That' because Tim Hughes and his identical twin brother, Tom, both play defense for the Warriors. i? The son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hughes, Tim is a linebacker, who was acknowledged by the coaching staff for superior performance in the opening game. Tim lettered on the varsity football team last year, and also pole vaults during track season. He is interested in getting involved in politics, and plans to study law and government in college. If he should become a public servant, he would be following in the footsteps of his parents, who are extremely involved politically, both in Nunda township and in the village of Holiday Hills. Besides playing football and pole vaulting, Tim is an avid hunter, and enjoys gymnastics, although McHenry does not have a gymnastics team as such. Last Saturday, it was Tim's interception which assured the Warrior victory over Maine North, and in commenting on the upcoming conference season, he said, "it never looked better." I 1 I V'. McHENRY SCHOOL LEAGUE 9-14-77 The first week of regular bowling was a tremendous success and the newly formed teams were off and running (some the wrong way). A few muscles were still stiff and achy, but J. Hamilton sure had no trouble in that department and bowled a fabulous 226 and totaled 480 for both high game and high series for the women. W. Coari took high game with a 201 and R. Home rolled in a 539 for high series. Congrat ulates! W. Farrell picked off the 2-4-10, E Rogers took the 5-7, and B.A. Street "paired" and took care of the 5- 10 split (each on their own alley). Won't predict any season winners, but the battle is on. Three McHenry runners, and a Johnsburg youth running for Marian Central swept the top four places in the Wauconda Invitational Cross Country meet Saturday, with the Warrior team finishing second and Marian fifth. Over 100 runners, representing seventeen schools participated in the 2.84 mile race on the Wauconda course, and first to finish was Mike Burmann of McHenry. His tim was a nifty 15:33.4. Teammate Vince Linnane was right behind in 15:51.4. Third place went to Darryl May of Johnsburg, who ran for Marian, and covered the course in 16:07, seven seconds faster than Kevin Weisenberger of McHenry. - w However, despite having three of the top four finishers, McHenry was still soundly beaten for team honors by Crystal Lake 53-83. In cross country, the low Score wins. Cro»» Country The unfortunate team standings came as a result of Crystal Lake placing five runners in the top fifteen. McHenry, after its 1,2,4 finish, closed out its scoring with a 31st and 45th place finish. Marian was the only small school to compete in the meet, and the Hurricanes finished fifth overall, just three points behind Crown, which came in fourth. Besides May, the other high finisher for the Hurricanes was Tom Hiller, also of McHenry, who finished 18th. The McHenry sophomore .tsSm won its portion of the meet, outrunning the other eighteen teams. The Warriors return to action Thursday, running against Conant and Buffalo Grove at Buffalo Grove.
