Name Oct. 2 FISH Day In McHenry The week of Oct. 1-8 as been designated FISH week in McHenry, with Oct. 2 being proclaimed FISH day. The proclamation was signed recently by Mayor Joseph Stanek, who in authorizing FISH day and week, stated, "They (FISH) are just a tremendous group and we are very fortunate to have them serving our community. FISH stands for Friends In Service Here, and is a purely volunteer group which works toward helping the less ' fortunate. The proclamation which Stanek signed was written by Marilyn Hamilton. It reads as follows: "Done at the city of McHenry this twentieth day of September, in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred seventy-seven. f "The McHenry FISH organization, one small link in a worldwide service organization of volunteers, has served the residents of the McHenry area since its conception four years ago. FISH volunteers, like their biblical predecessors, answer the call of those who temporarily need help, such as transportation to a hospital or to a physician, child care on an emergency basis, and the FISH line, a daily contact for the lonely and the housebound. "Caring citizens should be more aware of the opportunity to serve their fellow men through FISH. The strength of the FISH organization lies in its volunteers. They need and deserve the support and goodwill of every McHenry resident. "Now, therefore, I, Joseph B. Stanek, mayor of McHenry, do hereby proclaim Sunday, Oct. 2, 1977 as FISH day and OcLJ-8 as FISH week, and urge the people, organizations, churches, schools, and the media of public information to observe FISH week with appropriate recognition. "Dated at the city of McHenry, this twentieth day of September. 1977." After the proclamation was signed by the mayor, it was hung in the McHenry State bank. Brochures explaining more about the organization are available. Members of FISH hope that the organization's message reaches both those who need help and those who can help. Mayor Joseph Stanek signs the proclamation declaring Oct. 1-8 as FISH week and Oct. 2 as FISH day in McHenry. Watching Stanek sign the proclamation is Evelyn Elmore (left), president of the McHenry Women's club, and Arlette Rietesel. Below, Mrs. Rietesel lends a watchful eye as Cindy Stassen hangs the proclamation in the McHenry State bank. FREE ESTIMATES!
