i Iffy Doubling Their Fun Christi Stannell (above) and Sue Hutchinson (right) form McHenry's No. 1 doubles team. Tuesday, the duo rallied from a 5-7, 1-5 deficit to defeat their op ponents from Zion-Benton 5-7, 7-5, 6-2. Stannell and Hutchinson finished second in the Dundee Invitational tourney last weekend, and will be playing No. 1 doubles for McHenry in the McHenry Invitational tourney this coming Saturday. The defeat snapped a ten-match winning streak for McHenry, which had beaten Crystal Lake 157-170 on Monday. Tuesday however, it wasn't meant to be. Lake Forest's sixth and seventh golfers both fired 37s to insure the victory in what was expected to be McHenry's toughest match of the season. In golf, each team has seven men playing nine holes each, with the four lowest scores counting toward the team total. With Lake Forest's sixth and seventh men shooting brillint golf, the Warriors didn't have the fire power to cotnbat it. Tom Pepping shot the low round for McHenry, a 37, while Pat Becker and Tim Byers shot 38s. Ron pepping and Jim Buenzli each had 4ls. In the Crystal Lake victory, Buenzli led the way with a 37, Becker shot a 39, Pepping a 40, and Ron Pepping a 41. \ Despite the defeat, Warrior coach Charles Cuda was not disheartened. "One fifty-five is a respectable score," he said. Earlier in the year, Cuda noted that a score of 155 woriel be good enough to win most matches. But with the McHenry team consistently shootingin the high 140s or low 150s, the 155 score seemed worse than it really was. What is significant about the loss is that it occurred on the same course that McHenry will have to play in the state sectional tournament next month. McHenry will play host to the first round of state eliminations, the district meet, in which three out of fourteen teams will qualify for sectional play. The sectional will be played the following weekend at Lake Forest, with the top three teams, out of nine competing, advancing to Champaign for the state finals. Cuda indicated that the Lake Forest sectional will probably be the top sectional meet in the entire state. McHenry will get another shot at Lake Forest in the North Suburban conference meet, played at the McHenry Country club next month. PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. This is her fourth year of field hockey, and she said she went out for the team originally because somebody told her she should try it. She has also been a member of the basketball and softball teams, and explained that she became interested in sports through her father. Following graduation, she plans on attending college, possibly at Eastern Illinois university, and majoring in physical education. Both are members of the varsity football team, with Tom having various responsibilities on the defensive unit The son of Mr. & Mrs. Edward Hughes, Tom plans on attending college somewhere next fall, and hopes to learn a technical trade.
