SUPPLEMENT TO IV^cHENRY PLAIN DEALER - PAGE 4 - \VEDftlSDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1977 Here are a few cheek points that could save you gas and/or money. • You should have your spark plug cables replaced every two years, even if they dont appear to be cracked or worn. There may be internal hairline cracks from carbon that can weaken 'the flow AUTO TIPS By PATRICK KKLLT of current. A gas-saving, money-saving point. • Does your car's engine run fine when it's cold but miss at high speeds? Chances are your coil needs replaced. Have yotir mechanic deter mine this. . o When getting a tune-up, make sure the engine is timed to factory specifications, es pecially if you have a late model car. Also have the air- fuel mixture and idle adjust ment on the carburetor checked. o And what about the air filter that sits inside the fiat container on top of the car buretor? Take it out and hold it up to a light or into the sun. If you can't see light through the filter, get a new one. A dirty air filter can rob you of precious gas mile- ONES Under-dash FM stereo Supertuner with cassette. Home stereo FM performance: Brushed aluminum front. Phase lock loop for stereo separation. Has it been replaced lately? It will keep your carburetor functioning smoothly, saving you more gas and money. • The PCV valve. Pull it and shake it and if you don't hear it rattle, replace it. • Have you checked the fluid level in the master brake cylinder lately? It should be only one-fourth to one-half inch from the top. If the level is down, there may be a leak somewhere in the brake sys tem or the linings are worn down. • Don't look for a bargain in a brake job. Get good quality linings that should last 20,000 miles. Make sure the mechanic also checks and repacks the inner and outer front wheel bearings with grease. • • • Many factors affect the fuel economy of individual ve hicles. The weight of the vehiele is the single most important factor which affects fuel econ omy. Generally, the smaller the vehicle, the better the fuel economy. Optional equipment, such as automatic transmission and air conditioning, not only require more gasoline for their operation but also add weight. Your driving habits affect fuel economy. Frequent "starts and stops, long periods of idling, short trips and un even speed decrease fuel economy. Condition of engine affects fuel economy. Keeping your engine tuned will help you to get the best fuel economy and performance for your type of driving. * * * Why antifreeze ? What does it do? In freezing weather it keeps ice from forming in the cooling system. In hot weather its high boil ing point* helps the radiator dispel larger quantities of engine heat than is possible with water alone. In all seasons its rust and corrosion inhibitors help pre- 1926 Ford Coupe..... *3995 Restored. Why not use water? It's a cheap and effective agent for cooling the engine. But it has three faults as a coolant. If the temperature is too low, it freezes; if it's too high, it boils away; and it also con tributes to rust and corrosion. What is needed is a solu tion with a lower freezing point, a higher boiling point and the ability to inhibit rust and corrosion. • • • Owners of low-mileage cars --those driven on the average of 7,000 miles or less annually --may believe their cars stay in "mint" condition because of the low mileage. The low-mileage car owner may believe he should get recommended service at the normally suggested intervals as usual. But maintenance schedules are planned for automobiles driven the aver age of 10,000 to 12,000 miles a year. The engine suffers as a result of short distance driv ing because it does not have the time to warm up prop erly. Thus, vital lubrication of the engine's moving parts is restricted. New Highway In East Europe It will be at least 13 years before the first dirt is turned, but advocates are still ap plauding the progress made lately towards constructing a new 3,100-mile superhighway through eastern Europe. Ten countries have reached an agreement with the United National Development Pro gram to cooperate in the $500 million project, which will let motorists zip south from the Baltic Sea. The northern tip of the new Trans-European Highway will be the Polish port of Gdansk. It will run to Budapest, then branch into three alternate routes south, with one ending in Venice, another (incorpo rating existing parts of the Yugoslavian turnpike) in Athens, and the third in Istanbul. The Istanbul termi nus may later be linked to a throughway to Iran. The road, managed from headquarters in Poland, will be a joint effort of that country and Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Austria, Bulgaria, Rumania, Italy, Greece, Yugoslavia and Turkey.
