Static in CB reception can actually originate from the car itself, and David L. Walker, technical services di rector of Champion Spark Plug Co., says that an ear attuned to different sorts of CB interference can actually spot where in the vehicle the trouble is. For instance, Walker says that a popping sound over a CB that gets faster as the car goes faster and stops as soon as the ignition key is turned off means something is misfunctioning in the igni tion system. If tiie noise is a high mu sical whine that gets higher as the ear goes faster--and keeps on for a bit after the ignition key is turned off--it is a clue that something is wrong with the generator or alternator. Often the whine is accompsinied by an irregu lar rasping sound; that is caused by the voltage regu lator. Walker says that a hissing or clicking on the CB that conies and goes but gets worse on rough roads can be traced to something out of whack with one of the dash board instruments. «*•* The best way to save money is to refuse to buy anything until you can pay cash. Many Ways To Cart Trallbikes Motorcycles, once a way to get somewhere, have devel oped a subspecies that are intended primarily for recrea tion once you get somewhere --a beach, say, or a trail set aside for biking. That means that enthusiasts have to find ways to use their regular wheels to haul their fun wheels to the fun spots. " A bumper rack, which takes only a short time to install, can be attached to the rear bumper of a vehicle," says outdoorsman John Malo in his book on the subject, All-Terrain Adventure Ve hicles. "A double rack on the rear of a trailer or pickup truck, attached to the frame, can support the weight of two bikes. Tow bars aire also used in towing the cycle to the riding area." Malo warns drivers, how ever, to make sure that they have adequate shock ab sorbers if they are hauling more than 100 pounds. And the weight of the load will change a car's driving char acteristics. Another prepara tory caution: extra air should be put in the tires with accel eration slower and braking distances longer. "As an added safety meas ure," he advises, "checks of how the cycle or cycles are riding should be made along the route, especially on a long trip. Not only will it give you a chance to relax from driv ing for a while, but it will reassure you about any worries concerning the safety of you and your trailer."
