They cfuld have read it in this c wner. Keep thinking about the good t me we had with the crowd at c ir table. Have told you in years past t tat Roddy Winn used to wear t finis shoes when he caught for 1 ay Miller's team at 1 ichmond He could really I ock home plate. He also t ilked some batters into s ringing at bad pitches. Stan Mavis was one of i fgonquin's best. When he didn't pitch, he could handle other positions and hit the ball. In a popularity contest, Stan would win it all the way. Ray Moehle was a Fancy- Dan around first base with a dancer's footwork. The fellows were saying they could throw a ball over his head, but not past him. Ray Bangert. now Village President of Algonquin, used to play right field in the home park where a ball hit into the trees was a ground rule double. The ever popular Tubby Simonini was an all around ball player, a good pitcher all the way to the big leagues until a sore arm put him into the restaurant business. It was quite a reunion for Ted Pitzen and Liz Wirch. It can be recalled that Liz followed the Richmond team and gave the likes oTed a hard time. Ted found out later that Liz is a cousin of his wife, Lorraine. Let's hope the old time ball players and their wives will plan to attend the next reunion. There is a fun a-waitin'. Sox Invade Johnsburg! Bonnie Meyer told me two of her sons went to Comiskey Park for Polish Night. Game was rained out, but their hearts were in the right place. A clerk was amused when I apologized for giving her a 20 dollar bill to pay a $2.79 purchase. In the old days, if you wore the first customer in the morning, the storekeeper might have to scratch around to change a bill of that size. Larry Seborg sends a newspaper clipping about Steve Renko winning five straight games after being sent to the Sox from the Cubs. Larry also adds a rib that Kessinger helped also. That bit of information follows our answer to Winn Philips as to which Cub player we would take now. Come to think about it, Larry, Bruce Sutter wouldn't look bad in a Sox uniform. McHenry Country Club By John Busscher In the fourth and final round of the Past President's Tournament (the last tournament of the golf season) in Flight A, Don Hojnacki defeated Ken Rysso in a see saw battle that went down to the final hole Gary Fields beat Tom Utterback in Flight B while in Flight C, Dick Warfield won the last two holes to edge out Tom Barton 1 up. In Flight D, John Nolan won the last hole to eke out a win over Emil Lazar and in Flight E, Al Leight beat Jim Gillette. Congratulations to all these fine golfers on their victories. So ends another golf season as far as tournaments are concerned Overall it has been a great year and the good Lord willing we'll be back in the spring. Now on to tne World Series and another National League victory. (EDITOR'S NOTE: Huh!) I HOLY REINDEER! ILLINOIS n "Newspapers and their readers are partners in freedom, and if we fail to defend the freedom of the press, we neglect our own." --Lyndon Johnson Warriors Battle Lake Forest Injuries are plaguing the McHenry Warrior football team as they prepare for Saturday's important North Suburban conference contest at Lake Forest. Marty Deener, a two-way starter, will miss Saturday's game due to an arm injury sustained in Friday's loss to Mundelein. Another two-way performer, Ralph Guzman, was in the hospital Tuesday with an apparent case of tonsilitis. Tim Frantz was also in the hospital Tuesday, having broken a finger in a junior varsity game Monday afternoon. There were also assorted nagging little injuries, with the result being that Warrior coach Bill Day had less than thirty healthy bodies at practice Tuesday. , Either some people are going to have to have to get healthy rapidly, or there is going to have to be a superlative effort from those willing and able Saturday. Lake Forest sits atop the NSC, tied with Zion- Benton and Libertyville, all with 2-0 league marks. The Scouts have recorded three shutouts in their four games, indicating that McHenry will need all the firepower it can muster to win the game and remain in contention for the league championship. Surprisingly, even McHenry's 0-2 league mark doesn't eliminate them for the hunt for the title. Excluding hapless Crown, any of the other seven teams has the players to win. Even league favorite Crystal Lake is 0-2, something no one could have forecast two weeks ago. Day believes that 5-2 has a good chance of being good enough to tie for the NSC title, but if McHenry is going to be one of those at 5-2, it is going to ha ve to start winning immediately, if not sooner. Day indicated to quarterback Pete Prust before the Mundelein loss that he wouldn't be upset if the southpaw threw thirty-five passes. Of course, the rain put a damper on those plans, but one can expect Prust to be filling the air with footballs Saturday, not just in the final quarto:, but throughout the game. The four-game composite statistics indicate that the Warriors have been badly outgained by their opponents. However, it should be noted that McHenry has outgained its foes 441-386 in total yards in the second half. Unfortunately, in the first halves of the four games, McHenry is averaging just 39.7 yards. One discouraging figure is the total of 278 rushing yards in 123 carries, barely a two-yard average. That must improve if McHenry expects to defeat some of the league powers remaining on its schedule. Fans attending the Lake Forest game can get there by following these directions: Take Rt. 60 East until it ends at RL 41. Take Rt 41 North to Deerpath road, which is the first exit off of Rt. 41. Turn right on Deerpath to McKinley street. McKinley street is the first road intersecting Deerpath over the railroad tracks. Turn left on McKinley and go about two miles. The high school is on McKinley and will be on the right side of the road 4-OAME COMPOSITE STATISTICS 1 2 2 4 •t f Opponents 11 21 28 19 8 72 McHenry 7 4 4 27 8 M Oppe. Saturday's contest is a 'must' game for both the Hurricanes and their guests, as each stands 1-1 in the West Suburban Catholic conference A second loss for either would seriously hamper any hopes for a league title. Benet, Driscoll, and Immaculate Conception lead the league with 2-0 records, and although I.C. is just 2-2 overall, Benet and Driscoll are each 4-0. Marian lost to I.C. 21-6 last Saturday, and with Benet and Driscoll coming up later in the season, a second conference loss must be avoided at all costs. Montini, like Marian, is 1-3 overall, but Montini recorded its conference win against lowly St. Edward, beating the Green Wave 7-0 last week. The varsity game Saturday begins at 2 p.m., with the sophomores kicking off the big day and night of activities at noon. PHIL KENT DR. DONALD KIDD TENNIS CHAMPS-PHI Kent and Dr. Donald Kidd proudly display trophies they woo in the Hackers Tennis club league which runs from May until September. Playing at West Campus courts, Phil emerged the champion with Dr. Kidd taking second place. On Labor Day a picnic and tournament was held with the same results, Phil, first, and Dr. Kidd, second. In a horseshoe tournament held at the Kidd home later. Dr. Kidd captured first and John Gende, second. MCHS To Compete In 44-Team Peoria Tourney Forty-four teams have entered the Peoria Invitational Cross Country meet Saturday, with McHenry having to battle some of the top teams in the state for top honors. The meet figures to be a test of strength between Palatine Fremd and York, the No. 2 & 3 rated teams in the state. Other state-rated teams in the meet include No. 11 Hersey, No. 18 Evanston, No. 20 Metamora, No. 21 Belleville Dottie Hayes - 88; Fran Zank - 65 and Kathy Miller - 70. Each week, a board of coaches rates the top twenty- five Class 'AA' cross country teams, using recent performances as a criteria. The only ranked team McHenry has faced in a dual meet is No. 25 St. Charles, who easily defeated the Warriors on the West campus course early in the year. Cross Country Thursday, McHenry was scheduled to run against Zion- Benton and Crown on the Viking course in an important North Suburban conference dual meet. The dual meet season counts toward the NSC champion, with two points awarded for each dual victory. The conference meet is Nov. 8 at Libertyville, and 35 points will be awarded for first place in the conference meet. Then, all points for the seven dual meets and the conference meet are totaled, and a league champion is named. Coach Charles Cuda holds the championship trophy which the McHenry varsity golf team won recently in the Crown Invitational tournament. Standing behind Cuda are the five players who earned the first place trophy. They are, from left: Am Buensli, Tim Byers, Tom Pepping, Bob Lunkenheimer, and Pat Becker. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Lake Forest Meet Next For McHenry Golf Tean The McHenry varsity golf team begins the most important portion of its season Saturday, playing in the prestigious Lake Forest Invitational tournament. The meets is important for several reasons: 1) The only match McHenry has lost all season came at the hands of Lake Forest, and the Warriors will be seeking to get even. 2) The tournament attracts several of the top North Shore schools...teams that McHenry will have to beat if it is expecting to contend for state honors. 3) The Lake Forest course is the same site as the sectional tournament which McHenry will have to enter if it qualifies in the district meet. Following Saturday's tournament, the Warriors will return home and host the North Suburban conference golf tournament Tuesday at the local country club. Next Thursday, the hunt for the state golf championship begins with the district tournament, also to be played at McHenry, and featuring powerful Antioch and Waukegan East and West. The top three finishers in the district meet advance to the Lake Forest sectional the following Tuesday, at Lake Forest. From Lake Forest, the top three teams advance to Springfield, site of the state finals. It all happens very quickly, but the schedule is demanding and the competition fierce. . All that, of course, begins Saturday. In recent matches, the Warriors defeated Crown 153-182 and Zion-Benton 154-163 to boost their season record to 12-1. Bob Lunkenheimer led the way against Crown, shooting a 36, while Tom Peppixg, Jim Buenzli, and Ron Pepping each had 39s. Against Zion-Benton, Buenzli fired a 37, Tom Pepping 38, Tim Byers 39, and Lunkenheimer 40. Marmion Cross Country Team Tops Marian 22-23 "They were good. They are favored to win the conference and they had a real good pack." Those were the words of Hans Rokus, cross country coach at Marian Central after his Hurricanes were outclassed by Marmion 22-33 Tuesday afternoon on the Marian course. NSC STANDI NOS Crystal Lake Libertyville Lake Forest McHenry North ChiC«90 Z ion Benton Mundelein The loss drops Marian's season record to 6-5. As usual, Darryl May led the way for Marian, winning the race by more than twenty seconds. Unfortunately, between May and Mike Davis, the second Marian runner to finish, were four Marmion runners. The 2, 3, 4* 5, 8, finish was too much for the Hurricanes. Wednesday afternoon, Marian was scheduled to run in the Winnebago Invitational meet, a race featuring many of the top Class 'A' cross country teams in the state. Winnebago is presently ranked No. 5 statewide, and they defeated Marian earlier this year in the Wauconda Invitational meet In a race run last week, Marian soundly trounced St Edward 23-36. May was die individual winner, covering the three-mile course in 15:56. Davis was fourth, Paul Sandall fifth, Mike Gallagher sixth, and Ron Mauer seventh to round out the Hurricane scoring. The frosh-soph team from Marian also defeated St. Edward, winning 15-50. Mark Peske of Marian was the individual winner.
