So said Charles Cuda, golf coach at McHenry high school, in reference to the weather, and his team's performance in Saturday's 21-team Lake Forest Invitational Golf tournament. The low temperature and a violent wind sent scores soaring into the 80s and 90s, with McHenry able to do no better than fourth in the tournament. The scores were disap­ pointing for all teams, with Antioch's 334 total (four golfers playing 18 holes) being good enough to win. Lake Forest, playing on its home course, was second with a 335, while Glenbrook North came in third with a 341. McHenry totaled 345, including Bob Lunkenheimer with an 84, Tim Byers, 85, Jim Buenzli 86, and Tom Pepping 90, The same Lake Forest course will be the site of the state sectional golf tournament next Tuesday. Should weather conditions be ideal, a score of 334 probably won't be good enough to crack the top ten teams. Saturday however, it was good enough to win. Putting McHenry's 345 score in perspective, that averages out to a 86 per player. The 86 breaks down to a nine-hole average of 43. Last Thursday, in a duel match against Mundelein, McHenry had SIX players who shot under 40. What a difference a few days make! McHenry won its match over Mundelein 151-177, with Pat Becker and Ron Pepping each shooting 37s. Steve Kivley had a 38, while Buenzli, Tom Pepping and Byers each had 39s. The Mundelein victory concluded McHenry's duel match season with just one loss-to Lake Forest. Tuesday, the Warriors were scheduled to {day host to the North Suburban conference golg tournament, and Thursday, McHenry will host the state district golf tournament. The top three finishers in Thursday's tourney will ad­ vance to Lake Forest next Tuesday to play in the sectional tournament, the final step for the trip to Springfield and the state championship finals. Burmann Finishes Fifth In Peoria Invitational Mike Burmann of McHenry was the fifth runner to finish the Peoria Invitational meet Saturday, becoming the first Warrior ever to finish in the top five in the prestigious meet. Burmann's outstanding ef­ fort was the high point for McHenry, as the team could do no better than 25th in the 44- team race. Palatine Fremd was the meet winner, putting five runners in the top 15 finishers. York was second. After Burmann, the second McHenry finisher was Kevin Weisenberger, who placed 61st. Prior to Saturday, the best effort by a McHenry runner in the meet was John Mclnerney, who finished ninth in 1974. Andy Oakley finished 10th in 1975. The Warriors will return to action Thursday, running at Libertyville. Presently, McHenry is 3-1 in the North Suburban conference, having beaten Crown and Zion-Benton last week. Clearing Off The Sports Desk "Swing Our Gate in *78" is the slogan that the Moline-Rock Island Women's Bowling association, hostess for the 49th annual Illinois Women's Bowling association tour­ nament, hopes will welcome another record entry. The state's largest and longest sports event will open Jan. 7, 1978, and run ap­ proximately 14 weekends, plus weekday bowling March 4-12, an innovation. The last hostess association, Decatur WBA, fulfilled its promise that "Decatur's Heaven in '77" with a record enlistment of 2,805 teams, an increase of 251. Moline-Rock Island, however, intends to really swing, aiming for a 3,000 team entry, and therefore, a richer prize list than 1977's $94,219.
