A DOG'S PLEA by Vivian Madsen Remember me? I'm that cute little puppy you just couldn't live without. You took me home, but as I started to grow you got tired of me and didn't have the time to care for me - but still, I loved you. Just as God loves you when you neglect Him - and He never forgets you. I can't forget you either, even though you no longer care for me and have just dumped me out thinking someone else will take me in. Don't worry about me any more. I have gone home to my real master, God - did you notice his name is just like mine but spelled backwards. You see, I didn't know that thing called car wouldn't stop for me. Now I will no longer be cold and wet, or wonder who will feed me and be my friend. Yes, I laid there hurt and cried for quite a while but no one came. I would have loved to see you once more. So, next time you see a cute puppy, remember he will grow up as I did and become a dog. Don't take him unless you can care for him the rest of his life. It's better if you don't take any of us as you see we can't choose our owners anymore than a child can say who he would like for parents. Just forget me. MAIN ST.-McHENRY Nj The wafer our power plants use is fust as clean coming out as going in? : ' 41 i * £ 'It's my fob to make sure of it.' Evie Sembach is a chemist at Commonwealth Edison. And her special interest is the chemistry of water. It's Evie's job to study water samples taken from sources near our power plants. These generating stations use water much like a car's water-cooled engine uses it, and for the same reasons: to prevent the working parts from over heating, and to keep things running smoothly. As a coolant, water is a natural. And to make sure that the water we use meets environmental standards, we periodically test it. Back in the lab, Evie runs as many as 40 or more tests on every sample to be sure it meets these standards. Commonwealth Edison's been ihvolved in water sampling since the early 1900's, and we know that for truly accurate testing, we need a lot of samples from each station. So when Evie's not in the lab testing samples, she's out collecting them. Once a week, all year round. Wherever there's a station, there are chemists like Evie Sembach out sampling. Evie says: "Sometimes collecting samples is a real adventure, but we've got to make sure the water's the same coming out of our stations as it is going in. And I know it is'.'
