It was a beautiful visit and she greatly enjoyed the scenic splendor of drives taken through the mountains. HERE AND THERE IN BUSINESS New Circuit Breaker Deadline Announced Seniors who were 65 or older in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975 or 1976 and have never applied for the tax relief claim for grant should do so now, according to Marge.. Jones, executive director for the McHenry County Senior Citizens council. This grant, which is com monly known as the Circuit Breaker, is a form of tax relief for those who are either over 65 or totally disabled according to Social Security standards. The only other criteria is that the total income is under $10,000. This income relates to the person claiming the grant and his or her spouse only and it does include Social Security income. "The Circuit Breaker can do two things for seniors," Ms. Jones explained, "First, if you rent or if you own your own home, a refund can be made for the difference between 4 per cent of your income and either 25 percent of your rent or that poriton of your real estate tax bill that applies to your per sonal residence.- Second, a rebate is issued based on a flat percentage of your income.' Individuals living with their families may apply even if they do not pay rent and residents of nursing homes may also be eligible. "Many people assume that there must be strings attached to this grant," she continued, "but that is not so. The Illinois Legislature realized the im portance of finding some way of easing the burden of older taxpayers who are living on a fixed income." Currently, the grant is retroactive, back to 1972. However, after Dec. 31, seniors will only be able to apply for one year. This came about because of new legislation that will improve the benefits of the Circuit Breaker. "The McHenry County Senior Citizens council urges all seniors who have not filed previously to do so now in order to obtain the maximum benefits due them. Also, hthe Council would hope that people who have received the grant will check with their friends, and that families with older persons would inquire about the Circuit Breaker.
