a The Nifty Nineties ij Super Seniors The McHenry area most surely is blessed with women who are out standing for their ac complishments even though far past the ac cepted age of major ac tivity. The Plaindealer would like to pay tribute to them through a new column to be known as "The Elegant Eighties" or "The Nifty Nineties". Suggestions of women who might qualify, along with a brief resume, may be made by notifying the news desk. When she reads about the controversy surrounding retirement at 65, or at 70, Rose (Adams) Schaefer just smiles. At almost 91, she is still running the proverbial circles around many people half her age. But Rose Schaefer, whose next birthday is Dec. 6, is no ordinary woman. When con- ROSE SCHAEFER temporaries feel they deserve to sit beside the fireside, content with their memories, Rose is busy in her home or in the garden, depending on the season. It's a way of life that started three-quarters of a century ago, when she was only 15. Her mother became widowed with seven children to care for. As the third oldest child (the oldest girl) there was no question - young Rose would go to work. Opportunities were limited at the turn of the century. One of them was waitress work and that was her choice. With fond recollections, she remembers herself as a teenager shyly embarking on a learning period at the old Park hotel, located on the site of the present Overton sales garage at the corner of Front and Waukegan streets. It was an exciting time for one so young and she was an apt pupil. Later, the same kind of work took her to the Riverside hotel. Those were happy days, and as Mrs. Schaefer reflects on them she seems to relive her many experiences. "Why, one year I made $50 in tips", she recalls, adding a sincere desire, "I only wish I could wait on table again". She also worked for a time at the VanNatta laundry near the city park. There has been no retirement for Rose Schaefer. As recently as twenty years ago, when she was well past 70 years old, she was still sharing in the many duties of a ' family farm operation at Johnsburg. What about today? Rose Schaefer admits to awakening many mornings wondering how she can possibly accomplish all she has set aside to do. In the summer, this includes planting and the entire care of a huge garden. And it doesn't stop there. All of the products of her labor are canned or frozen for winter use. Even lawn mowing is not too strenuous for Mrs. Schaefer, who makes her way across a good size yard with a push mower to the astonishment of her friends and passersby. Rose Schaefer has been blessed with good health which she credits, in part, to her active life. Eye surgery in recent years only slowed this remarkable woman, but today she is back at all her former pursuits. Testimony to her expertness with a needle are the ninety- seven quilts she has made, as well as pillows, aprons and other beautiful, handmade items, some of which still can be seen about her home. And what about tomorrow? Retirement is not a word she even thinks about. As long as God favors her with the strength to be active, she will continue accomplishments that have been a* source of tremendous satisfaction through the years. Rose Schaefer is well deserving of being selected to open this "Super Seniors" column.
