PAGE • - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. OCTOBER 19, 1177 For Sectional Everyone played miserably, with the possible exception of Biienzli and Tom Pepping, who had an 81. During the season, McHenry defeated Antioch, Crystal Lake, and Zion-Benton, the latter failing to qualify by just (Hie stroke. Thursday, however, under the pressure of their being "no tomorrow", the McHenry scores soared, so that the Warriors .narrowly missed qualifying. The district scores, of course, do not count in the sectional meet. There, McHenry, Crystal Lake, Antioch, and Waukegan East, will face golf teams from Barrington, Hersey, Glenbrook North, Glenbrook South, New Trier East, New Trier West, and Deerfield. The three top teams in the sectional will qualify for the state finals, scheduled for this coming weekend in Springfield. However, after nine holes of play, the standings were as follows: McHenry 158 Barrington 159 Glenbrook South 161 Glenbrook North 155 Deerfield 167 Antioch 161 Crystal Lake 167 Waukegan East 157 New Trier East 156 New Trier West 156 Hersey 156 See Friday's Plaindealer for complete coverage of the secional golf tour nament. The McHenry high school varsity golf team competed Tuesday in the Lake Forest Sectional Golf tournament for the right to advance to the state finals, which will be played this coming weekend in Springfield. Eleven teams competed in the Lake Forest sec tional, generally regarded as the strongest sectional meet in the state of Illinois. The top three teams in the Lake Forest sectional will join other top sectional finishers from around the state in a 36-hole tour nament for the state title Friday and Saturday. Among the top teams competing with McHenry was New Trier East, a team from Winnetka which has not lost either a dual match or a tournament all year. Word is around that Bob "Big" Adams is dieting. Hadn't noticed. EARL WALSH Bob and I have a little project to work out. Down at the Fox Hole one night we couldn't get a word on the World Series game. No TV. No radio. "Red" just smiled. SPORTS EDITOR No. 1 IRISHMAN Bev Justen came to our door with glad tidings that brightened our day. In the package we found this letter which we hope she won't mind having printed: Dear Earl: Again this year "The Pack Are Back" back of the pack in their division that is. Already we have had our season of elation, on opening day, when they beat New Orleans and were in 1st place for a week. We do believe that Bart is much too passive for the "Pack". If rumblings persist from the northland he just may have to make his exit this fall. He is much too nice of a guy for this to happen, but as in all sports it seems niceness doesn't count, only viciousness seems to. Glad you recognized our car with the "Green Bay Packer" sticker. We are of the minority here in *Bearsville" although there are a couple of others, Wm. E. (Bill) Miller and Don WatUes. We are hoping the bumper sticker which we are giving to you is one of a kind. Hope you will place it on your car and drive in safety and good health along with your own personal shamrock which you may display in office, car or home. Our best to you Jack & Bev Justen Somebody guessed that "Do El It Yourself" Evo had taken the 11 rl' tt radio apart and couldn't put it together again. We thought of a tag day, or selling chances to raise funds | for a new talking box and hold a presentation ceremony. That was more fun than a picnic for me. When we get together, all subjects are covered like some people cover the waterfront. May have to be careful with that claim. Some big Irishman might come along and challenge such a claim. Anyhow, the thought and remembrance is with us a lot. and Tim Byers' 85 (top right), enabled McHenry to tie Crystal Lake for the third and final spot in the sectional tournament which was scheduled for Tuesday at Lake Forest. Other McHenry golfers who competed Thursday were Ron Pepping (lower left), and Pat Becker (middle left). STAFF PHOTOS-WAYNE GAYLORD As Lois Peterson says, "You have more fun than anyone." Nice people bring fun and happiness. We could all make ourselves happier if we followed this rule -- If we wake up in the morning not feeling so kindly toward the world, we should shake ourselves loose and do some kind deed for another person. That would give us a big lift. Had a visit with Vera Kays (County Clerk Deluxe) and naturally drifted into baseball. Vera has many great qualifications for the Hall of Fame, not the least of which is being a staunch White Sox hooster. Burmann Captures 2nd County X-Country Title It was a thrill as always to watch the Warrior Marching band. Coaches are not the only ones who lose talent through graduation. Band leaders face the same problem. It is amazing how they can come up with coordinated programs year after year. It was Homecoming at MCHS and a sizeable crowd showed up for the game. McHenry sophomore to finish, placing fifth behind four Libertyville runners. Wayne Besserud finished sixth. Marian Central also ran a meet Thursday, tipping Im maculate Conception 26-29. May was the individual winner, while Davis was fourth and Paul Sandall fifth. The Marian sophomores were also victorious, defeating I.C. 28-29. The Warrior offense needs a spark. Some of the boys sparkle at times. It's just a case of not getting it all together. Thought we saw signs of our players beginning to believe in McHenry Knights of themselves. Coach Cuda and his MCHS golf team go to the head of the class because they showed class in winning the conference title with strokes to spare. Some fine golfers have emerged from our high school teams over the years. Club champion Art Jackson had better keep an eye on these young fellows. There were a couple of good things about the football game here Friday night. either the Warriors or Hurricanes. The sophomore race was won by Woodstock with 20 points, followed by Marian with 58 and McHenry with 60. Mike Davis of Marian finished third overall, while Wayne Besserud was the top McHenry finisher. Besserud was eighth. Burmann's repeat victory Saturday came in the wake of another individual victory Thursday in a meet against Libertyville and Waukegan East. Unfortunately, McHenry lost to Libertyville 24-37, while beating Waukegan East 26-31. Following Burmann across the finish line Thursday were Weisenberger, third; Linnane 15th; and Jim Smith, 22nd. The McHenry sophomores also split the meet with Libertyville and Waukegan East, beating Waukegan 16-43, and losing to the Wildcats 17-44. Randy Wright was the first Mike Burmann won the McHenry county cross country title for the second year in a row Saturday, covering the three-mile Woodstock course in 15:26. Despite Burmann's per formance, McHenry's varsity team could do no better than third in the meet, losing to champion Crystal Lake and Woodstock. Crystal Lake totaled 33 points to 65 for Woodstock and 75 for McHenry. Cary-Grove was fourth with 88 points, followed by Marian with 90. Darryl May of Johnsburg, running for Marian Central, finished third in the race with a time of 16:09, just behind John Perron of Cary-Grove. Kevin Weisenberger of McHenry was sixth in 16:24, and Tom Hiller of Johnsburg, (running for Marian) was 15th in 16:54. Unfortunately, the depth which is needed to win the team competition wasn't there for Recreation Area The Illinois Power company and Illinois Department of Conservation recently an nounced a cooperative arrangement to develop and manage a multi-million dollar outdoor recreation area around the cooling lake for the Clinton Power station in DeWitt county, not far from Bloomington, Champaign, and Decatur. The area will en compass about 12,000 acres including the 5,000 acre lake. It will provide opportunities for camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, picnicking, sailing, powerboating, water skiing, swimming and wildlife viewing. Know what? He blames me for the downfall of the Sox in the late stages of the season. Know why? He saw my picture in the Plaindealer with Mr. Cub, the great Ernie Banks. Now, that is a nice letter. The shamrock is large and beautiful. Think I'll hang it around my neck on St. Patrick's Day. The sticker reads: McHENRY'S Vera just returned from a trip through the Scandinavian countries.
