Shetland Sheepdog They hail from Scotland's rugged Shetland Islands -- home of that other famous diminutive animal, the Shet­ land Pony. Here Shetland Sheepdogs, miniature version of the Collie, have been favor­ ite^ for at least two hundred years, herding sheep and shar­ ing the farmer's home as fam­ ily pets. Though Shetland Sheep­ dogs are less than half the size of a Collie, weighing only 15- 20 pounds and standing 13-16 inches high, they are just as beautiful. They have the same fluffy double coat, with a thick white mane and bib and feathered chaps. The two breeds certainly had a com­ mon ancestor, and it's prob­ able that, like other animals on the Shetland Islands, Shel- ties have been bred smaller over the years. Only under­ sized animals can survive in this rocky land with sparse vegetation, where even the shepn are half as big as their couterparts on the Scottish mainland. The farmers who bred Shelties weeded out dogs who didn't fit their demanding requirements -- a dog had to earn its keep -- and this pro­ cess has made the Sheltie a highly regarded herder. A Sheltie can follow its errant charges where a larger dog often can't; in Wyoming and Montana, ranchers value Shelties for their ability to run quickly across deep Snow without breaking through the crust. They are much prized at lambing time because of their gentleness with ewes. Shelties make gentle family pets, too. Unlike their Collie cousins, they can adapt well to apartment living, and their sensitive, loving nature makes them especially fine compan­ ions for older people. Shelties are playful and affectionate with children, but they do need an owner who is willing to put time in on grooming their luxurious coats. A little wary with stran­ gers, Shelties are good watch­ dogs. They are not inclined to stray. Bred to be obedient and protective, Shetland Sheepdogs are happiest when keeping close watch over their home territory. Now, before the seasonal rush, is prime time to have your annual heating-plant checkup.
