Former Illinois Governor Dan Walker attacked the "pack school" of journalism and "club politics" in his address to the McHenry County college journalism students. "I like individualism in politics and journalism," Walker said, explaining his opposition to follow-the-leader reporting and closed- membership political parties. Walker decried the state's history of back room political deals which he said limits participation by the voting public. Walker said political slatemaking by a select few in Cook county overrode his 69- percent plurality elsewhere in the state in the 1976 Democratic primary election. Cooperatives occupy a significant position in the American economic and business system, aiding both farmers and the communities in which they are located, Stanley Steagall, chairman of the McHenry county committee marking October as Cooperative month, said. Local cooperatives are marking this month to explain how they provide needed goods and services for their owners- farmers who united in the first place to reduce costs, increase efficiency and - help produce food at less cost. Theme for the 1977 "October is Cooperative Month" is "Cooperatives: Good for America." "Cooperatives add jobs and income to the local business area and provide added tax money for the community through increased income to members and employees and from taxes paid by the cooperative business," said Steagall. Steagall, general manager of McHenry FS, pointed out that cooperatives are owned by local people, the farmer members who depend on them for service. The money they pay to employeesws used within the community; he added that cooperatives are also big purchasers of the things they need to function-from elec tricity and telephone service to trucks and office supplies. The scope of cooperatives in Illinois is extensive with about 600,000 members belonging to 900 cooperatives. Over 85 percent of the milk produced in Illinois is cooperatively marketed at the first point of sale in the state. About 70 percent of Illinois corn and soybeans initially moves through cooperative-owned elevators. "Farmers benefit, too. They had a dependable source of supply.
