Warrior PAGE 6 - PLAINDEAI FR - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1177 Jim Buenzli knocks this shot close to the pin on the sixteenth hole at Lake Bluff Country club during this action from the Lake Forest Sectional Golf tournament Tuesday. Bjienzli was the tournament medalist, shooting a brilliant one-over-par 73 on the tough course. Buenzli's 73, a 76 by Ron Pepping, and a 77 by Tim Byers enabled the Warriors to place third in the meet and capture the last qualifying spot for the state tournament this Friday and Saturday in Springfield. Like the once famous Oakland team, the Bombers showed you don't have to have harmony on a team to pick up all the marbles. There must be more, but this corner hasn't met more than one fan who wanted the Yankees to win. The big favorite was Kansas City, a great team that couldn't swing it against the Billy Martin championIB Now we turn to football, basketball and all the other sports. A friend noted that I wrote about former business people on the West side of McHenry so how about mention of the great characters of Riverside Drive fame. There was Larry Huck, Sr., who ambled down to the Johnny Karls restaurant from his gas station to join such funsters as the Barbian brothers, Paddy Frett and Melvin Whiting. Ernie Buch crossed over from his plumbing and heating store. "Red" Winkel crossed from the Post Office to bother Johnny. McHenry Ice Cream Shoppe NOW FEATURES! John Bolger (The Lord rest his soul) used to pick me up to go down for a cup of coffee -- mostly to join the fun group. Mrs. Niesen operated a fine restaurant next to the John R. Knox garage. Eva Guinto Anderson carried on the tradition. ; The Bickler Hotel was a popular spot and was famous for a $1.25 chicken dinner on Sunday. Helen Schneider's parents ran a general store that was later taken over by Joe J. Miller. John Buck had a saloon that his son, Joe, later ran when drinking spots were no longer called saloons. It is now the Schmaltz Miller building. Joe Engeln was a hardware dealer in the days before such stores sold candy and pan tyhose. Some of these names may have come in different eras. The Riverside Hotel was a famous spot for summer visitors who came to McHenry by train. Memory may not be clear, but Frank Gans, Sr., and Fred Justen ran the hotel. Lou Bishop was the street barber and admitted he never went to West McHenry. The Joe Rothermel family established a boat factory to add another going business to the Drive. The late Roy Kent wasn't one of the early settlers. However, he was a live wire who brought life to the area. It has been a season of disappointment for both Marian Central and Marmion. Saturday, the Hurricanes and Cadets will have the op portunity to take their frustrations out on one another with a game in Woodstock beginning at 2 p.m. Both teams have won one game in the West Suburban Catholic conference, and each has lost three times. Marian is coming off a 27-13 loss to Driscoll while Marmion- was being flattened by Montini 40-6. The Hurricanes continue to be led offensively by Mike Wenzel and Kurt Parker. Saturday, both players scored a touchdown, with Parker tallying on what has become his specialty-turning short passes into long touchdowns. Parker scored against Driscoll on a 66-yard pass from Bill Banker. The Marian Central defense yielded three touchdown passes to Driscoll, and the Hurricane offense turned the ball over on seven different occasions. They - will have to reduce the number | of turnovers if they expect to • defeat the Cadets. The Marian sophomores open the day of football, kicking off at noon. Hurst 132 391 The Pacers Playing brilliantly on a cold, rainy, windy day, the McHenry varsity golf team qualified for the state finals this weekend by placing third in the Lake Forest Sectional Golf tournament. The Warriors carded a brilliant 313 team score, three strokes behind winning New Trier West and two strokes behind New Trier East. All three teams advanced to the 36-hole final to be played over two courses in Springfield Friday and Saturday. Jim Buenzli of McHenry fired the lowest round of the day, shooting a one-over-par 73 on the tough Lake Bluff Country club course. Right behind Buenzli came teammates Tom Pepping and Tim Byers, shooting 76 and 77 respectively. Pepping's round was even more remarkable considering that he was six-over- par after just four, holes, having quadrouple bogeyed the first hole and double bogeyed the fourth. Byers had an out-of-bounds on the seventeenth hole which prevented him from firing an even better round. Buenzli had a two-under-par 34 on the front nine enroute to his 73, which was the low round of the day not only in the Lake Forest sectional, but in three other sectionals in northern Illinois. Only fifteen teams remain in the hunt for the state golf title. Besides McHenry, New Trier West, and New Trier East, the following teams qualified in various sectionals around the area: Thornwood (322), Shepard (327), Hinsdale Central (330), Palatine Fremd (327), Glenbard West (334), East Leyden (335), Freeport (318), Homewood-Flossmoor (319), Joliet West (328). The McHenry golf team was scheduled to leave for Springfield Wednesday afternoon. Head coach Charles Cuda said he hoped his team would have an opportunity to play both courses the tournament will be held on before the tourney starts. This is the first team Cuda has taken to the state finals in the twenty-seven years he has been golf coach at McHenry. McHenry, Crown Seek League Win Escaping the North Suburban conference cellar will be the goal of both McHenry and Crown Saturday, as the Warriors and Vikings battle at Crown. Both teams are 0-4 in the NSC, and both are 1-5 overall. Despite the dismal records, fans attending the game can expect to see an exciting contest, with the possibility existing of many touchdowns being scored. The Warriors haven't scored a touchdown in eight quarters, being blanked by both Zion- Benton last Friday and Lake Forest the week before. One of the bright spots for McHenry in recent weeks has been the play of the defensive unit. It held Zion-Benton in check throughout Friday's homecoming contest, yielding only one touchdown, that on a long pass play. The defense also performed well in the 22-0 loss to Lake Forest, never yielding despite having to face a well-oiled "wishbone" offensive machine. Offensively, the Warriors have stuggled a bit. Tim Oakley gained 95 yards rushing against Lake Forest, but the Warriors could not move either by air or on the ground against Zion- Benton. Crown has steadily improved throughout the season. Last Saturday, the Vikings outgained North Chicago by more than two-to-one in total offense, but still lost 18-14. All season long, Crown has been given up key touchdowns in important situations via a pass interception or a punt return. Saturday's contest starts at 2 p.m., with the sophomore game beginning at noon. Fans attending the game can find Crown high school by following these directions: Take Rt. 31 south into Algonquin to Rt. 62. Take Rt. 62 east to Rt. 25 south (like you were going to Meadowdale). On Rt. 25 south, turn right on Kings road. Kings road is the first stop light after Rt. 25 becomes a four lane highway. Follow Kings road as it winds around, and . .the school will be visible from the road. •L. Danuser C. Miller Now & Then K.Parker Shore Shooters M. Haeffird 168 K.
