High points of the convention Gem Society Slates Officer Election Nov. 1 the Hiawatha Gem and Mineral society will hold its next regular meeting at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 1, at St. Patrick's church hall, McHenry. Election of officers for the ensuing year will be held. There will also be a special lapidary program featuring gold wire wrapping and silversmithing demonstrations by Darrel and Carol Beaton. This program will provide knowledge in the art of jewelry making. The public is invited; however, anyone under 16 years of age must be ac­ companied by an adult. will include competitions between quartets and choruses representing regions from the entire Sweet Adelines organization, as they vie for the coveted titles of Queens of Harmony and International Champion, respectively. Jarrod won a second place red ribbon in the event which consisted of walking, trotting, stopping, and canterihg his horse. In the second event, which required that the rider maneuver the horse in and out of barrels and over boards, Jarrod came in fourth place. A third event had the riders holding a cup of water while putting their horses through their paces; the score for this event was based upon the amount of water remaining in the cup. Jarrod took second place in this water event. Congratulations to a fine young man who has been in­ terested in horses for many years. Keep up the hard work/ Jarrod; it will pay off in later years. There will be coffee for the parents and prizes for the youngsters. There will also be the usual pumpkin carving contest and the costume contest for the funniest, scariest, and prettiest costumes. Don't forget to be present and try to win a prize for your costume, ANNUAL BAZAAR The annual Christmas bazaar will be held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11 and 12. The hours will be as follows; Friday, 7 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.' Remember that the proceeds from this bazaar will go toward the purchase of tables and chairs for the annex. Goc, son of Mr. and Mrs. Casey Goc of 3721 W. Lake Shore drive, Wonder Lake, has been promoted to the rank of cadet staff sergeant at the U.S. Air Force academy. Cadet Goc, a member of the class of 1980, has also been appointed a squadron assistant training sergeant. Assignment to this position will provide invaluable job and leadership experience. The cadet is a 1976 graduate of Woodstock high school. liUEST CLERGYMAN-Rev. Stephen S. Infantine, Ph.D., instructor of philosophy at College of Lake County, was guest speaker and assisted Rev. Arthur McKay at Mass at St. Paul's Episcopal church Sunday, Oct. 23. To a large gathering of parishioners, Rev. Infantino described the changes in the church and the Mass, the ordination of women to the priesthood, relations with Catholic bodies and loyalty to the church. A cake made by Lynne Podpora was enjoyed by Rev. Infantino, his wife, Cynthia, who celebrated her birthday Sunday, and other parishioners after the service.
