My classes are now studying the unemployment problem in Illinois and I wondered how I could go about getting statistical information oo the employment rates for various areas of Illinois. Is there a place I could send for this type of material? The Illinois Department of Labor, Bureau of Employment Security, Research and Analysis division compiles the type of information you are seeking. Persons interested in obtaining unemployment rate data can write the division at 910 South Michigan avenue, 4th Floor, Chicago, 111.60605, to the attention of Ms. Delma Lee. I have worked for a company one and a half years. My company has a policy that entitles us to one week paid vacation leave per year. At the end of my first year with the company, I took my week of vacation. I am now quitting my job to move to another city. Isn't my employer required to pay me for the accrued vacation time I earned during the additional 6 months I've worked? He refuses to do so. In Illinois, there are no laws which require employers to provide their employees with paid vacation benefits. If your company does have a vacation benefit policy, the Wage Payment and Collection act provides that, in many cases, vacation pay is considered earned wages and should be paid to the employee as part of his final compensation. However, the key to your question lies in how your company's policy reads. If it states that you are to be given one week per year, then chances are that you have to work the full year before vacation beneifts are due you. The Wage Claims division of the Illinois Department of Labor enforces the Wage Payment and collection act and can answer any questions you may have. They are located at 910 South Michigan avenue, 18th Floor, Chicago, 111. 60605. Questions may be submitted to Workwise, Room 705, Stratton Office Building, Springfield, 111. 62706. The Veterans administration reminds former servicemen and women that their families should be made aware of the VA burial allowance available to eligible veterans. VA provides up to $250 toward the burial expenses of eligible veterans and an additional $150 is available as a )t or interment allowance, if il is not in a national cemetery or other government cemetery. These VA payments will be reduced or eliminated in cases where the veteran's employer or a state agency has made such payments. In cases where a veteran's death is service-connected, VA will pay an amount not to exceed $800 in lieu of the usual burial allowances. With the exception of Arlington National cemetery, burial is available to eligible veterans at all national cemeteries having space, and may also be authorized for an eligible veteran's wife or husband, minor children and, under certain circumstances, unmarried adult children. Eligibility requirements for burial at Arlington National cemetery may be obtained from the Superintendent, Arlington National cemetery, Arlington, Va. 22211. VA will provide a headstone or grave marker for eligible veterans, and memorial markers are provided for certain members of the armed services who die on active duty and whose remains are not recovered, or who are buried at sea. An American flag will also be provided upon request for use in covering the casket. Veterans eligible for the VA plot and burial allowances and for burial in a national cemetery are those discharged under conditions other than dishonorable and who served in the Spanish-American war, Mexican Border period, World Wars I and II, the Korean conflict, or the Vietnam era. Also eligible are peacetime veterans entitled to service- connected compensation at time of death or discharge or who were retired for disability incurred in the line of duty, it was pointed out MILITARY MAIL McHenry residents can help make this holiday season a little less lonely and a little more enjoyable for many of these young people by joining in the collection of Christmas mail sponsored by Military Overseas Mail.
