HEART WORM STRIKES Last ' summer Alma Hueckstaedt wrote a very moving article on the danger of our dogs being victims of heart worms. Ruth Freeman read it, but knowing that Lakemoor had a mosquito abatement program, did not feel any necessity to give her dogs the preventive pills. Now Willy is in the hospital, will probably be given the arsenic treatment and hopefully will be saved. Just one bite from one in­ fected mosquito can mean a painful, expensive hospital stay for your dog, or perhaps even cause the death of your pet. A simple blood test at the vets, plus daily pills for 9 months, will help you avoid the hear­ tache that the Freeman family is facing now. WHAT'S IN A NAME? Ray Embrey reports that visitors and residents will soon know the names of the streets in our area. The new street signs have been delivered and are waiting to be put up. Then we will all know that Route 120 is Rand road in Lakemoor and Lilymoor. HOME AGAIN Welcome back to Alyce and Andy Kowal who took a three week vacation to Indiana and came home three months later! Andy had a health problem that kept them away longer than planned ML We're glad to have you here, and the veterans at the hospital at Great Lakes will be especially happy to have their Alyce back with them. CONGRATULATIONS Patti and Larry Blake became the proud parents of baby girl Blake Oct. 19. Brothers Larry Joe and Brian needed a baby sister to take care of. Lauren is Edith and Wilfred Blake's thirteenth grandchild, which must have a special meaning. Oct. 25 marks Peter and Connie O'Rourke's wedding anniversary, and the Anthony Gurskes celebrate theirs Oct. 29. Enjoy each other many more years. A fun-filled happy birthday is wished for Marilyn Ryfin, Nov. 2. Marilyn is the secretary of our library board. Four red roses were given to Alma Hueckstaedt by her youngest son, to mark her fourth anniversary of being a non-smoker. Who else has joined the clean lung-and-ash- tray brigade? CITIZENSHIP When you vote, have you ever wondered who those people were who were responsible for your ballots? I was initiated into "judgeship" at the school District 15 referendum at Hilltop, and it was an ex­ perience in basic government. Preparatory to Saturday's voting had been a meeting and reading of a thirty-one page Illinois State election manual. Carolyn Rasmussen, Alyce Kowal, Alma Hueckstaedt and myself arrived at Hilltop at 9 a.m. and were met by a con­ cerned John Nellis, the prin­ cipal, who had had to digest more coffee and cookies these past weeks than should be expected of a principal. The booths were set up, the bell rung, and the people came, signed affidavits and voted. Ruth Freeman brought us some welcome food, provided by her husband, Curtis. Our 13-hour day ended after tallying over 500 votes. A good lesson in citizenship was learned. COMING EVENTS Oct. 31, Halloween party for 1-13 year olds. Lakemoor municipal building, 6:30 to 8 p.m tmSnLI .few V- Sunny side Area Betty Messer 344-2494 Johnsburg Students Visit Pumpkin Patch The second and third grades of the James Bush school, Johnsburg, took a field trip to a pumpkin patch on a farm in Wisconsin. The children were allowed to go into the field and select their own pumpkin. They spent the day at the farm and enjoyed a hayride, playing in hay stacks and pony rides. The children are now decorating their pumpkins and there is a coHtest for the best jack-o-lantern. VILLAGE MEETING Tuesday, Nov. 1, is the regular meeting of the village of Sunny side. Meetings are held at 4206 Wilmot road, behind the Sunny side inn, promptly at 8 p.m. Come out and see what is going on in your village. Newcomers are invited to meet village officials. The village has accepted bids for snow removal and ordered sand and salt. I guess this means winter is not far off, but we're all set for when snow arrives. HALLOWEEN WEEKEND This is Halloween weekend and little ghosts and goblins will be out. Be sure your youngsters are off the street by dark. Police will be patrolling the area for those pranksters who feel Haloween is the time to do some destruction. This year why not go and visit the Pistakee Highlands haunted house at the com­ munity club. It will be open Oct. 28.through 30 from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight. There'll be free treats, prizes and surprises. BIRTHDAYS This week's birthday bouquets go to Melba Wendell who has her special day Oct. 26. James Kaiser has his day Oct. 30. He displayed samples of illustrations submitted for his book. Honorary membership certificates were accepted by each student, making them members of the Sneeky Sneekers. Mike Jaroch, author of "The Tornado" from his Sneeky Sneekers series, recently visited Mrs. Arndt's fifth grade class at Edgebrook school. Mr. Jaroch took the students through the past, present, and future phases of his personal writing experiences, as well as presenting the different steps involved in writing and having a book published. Safety Essay Contest Open To All Seniors The Illinois Editors' Traffic Safety seminar again is in­ viting all Illinois high school seniors to compete for ten $500 Chicago Motor club scholarship grants which will be awarded to winners of the seminar's twelfth annual traffic safety essay contest. The top scholarship grants will be awarded to five boys and five girls. There will also be $25 U.S. Savings Bonds to the twenty- five runners-up in the contest. All, > high school sewers enrolled in public, private and parochial schools in Illinois are eligible to submit essays on the topic, "Teenage Traffic Ac­ cidents: How Can The Record Be Improved?" The essays of 500 words or less must be submitted to Seminar Headquarters, 66 E. South Water St., Chicago, 111., 60601, with a postmark no later than Dec. 31. forgotten.
