My mother had a hard life and is now (tying of cancer. My own life has been filled with nothing but trouble. I and members of my family have had several major and minor surgeries. I had a cerebral hemmoriiage at 41 and eventually made a full recovery. Our younger son is a mild schizophrenic and unable to hold a job for long and lives with us j>ait of the time. Now I have to watch my mother dying of cancer. I've always been a strong person, but I can't take much more. I am drinking more and more and think 1 may be becoming an alcoholic. Even a strong person can be crushed by life evetually. It certainly doesn't seem fair. Can you give me an answer? A. A psychiatrist once said: "The chief duty of a human being is to endure life." Which of course is pretty bleak. But the Bible says: "This is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith." Which is pretty inspiring. You have had plenty of trouble, but it is interesting how some people rise above trouble and live victoriously. Others contantly think trouble. And to a certain extent they create trouble. At least they live in a trouble climate. One thing you can do is to work on developing a positive, hopeful attitude. To the extent that you do this, trouble will tend to diminish. We have a booklet, "You Can Overcome Any Problem," which has helped others with questions such as yours, and a copy of it is on its way to you. Any reader max also have a free copy by writing us at Box 500, Pawling, NY 12964. Daughter Is In A Cult ' \ Q. My daughter is in a cult. She is so programmed to the leader's way of thinking that her father and I find our faith tested daily. We are now in the position of heathen whom she is trying to convert. I am so concerned about the isidious influence on her and on thousands of other vulnerable young people as well. What is your opinion of the various cults that are attracting so many of our young people? A. It is true that some young people are so amateurish and 8ophomoric about their religion as actually to believe that they have all the answers. Don't let your daughter give you a sense of guilt simply because she has been brainwashed. Keep on loving her. Don't argue with her. Pray for her until at length' she grows up and hopefully wises up. Husband Abuses Children Q. My husband abuses our children. He has these spells where he cannot control his anger. And we "watch out" because he'll always lash out and somebody always gets hurt There is so much hatred in our family. Some of our children hate their father with such a passion that I am afraid that tragedy will come. My husband's parents abused him and damaged him emotionally by their severe and harsh methods of disciplining. However, he refuses to accept that this is true, so I think I have no alternative but to leave him. However, I really do love him, and it breaks my heart to even think of leaving him. Why is it that a person won't acknowledge that he even has a problem? I've searched and searched for an answer and have not found it A. Any father who is so lacking in emotional control obviously needs help. Whether you as a wife can help him is a question. But you can try. For one thing, don't react with fear when he's angry. Rather than "watching out," meet him eye to eye and stand firm. When he comes to the point where he knows and will admit that he hasaproblem, then and only then can he really be helped. Meanwhile, just love him as best you can and believe that he will come to his senses. Pray for him as a mixed-up and unhappy person. Patient love, combined with quiet strength, has a strange power. If there is something you would like to ask Dr. and Mrs. Peale to discuss in this column, write to them in care of Box 500, Pawling. NY 12564. "Operation Identification99 Is Inaugurated P< 51Q be MRS. ALBERT STILLING The. fall meeting of the Fourth District of the Illinois Federation of Women's clubs was held Oct. 17 at Garden Prairie, 111., with the Garden Prairie Women's club acting as hostesses. District President Mrs. Albert Stilling commented on the turnout of sixty-three members representing twenty- one area county clubs. She opened discussion pertaining to the primary project of the clubs, the anti-burglary program, Operation I.D. The Fourth District is working on a 75 percent coverage for McHenry, Boone, and Win-' nebago counties. A "theft prevention kit" is being made available through the club which provides the recipient with material to mark and register all possessions which may be of value to burglars. Using a specially designed stencil and engraving tool provided in the kit, per sonal television sets,; CB radios, watches arid other valuables can now be easily marked with a unique code number. The kit also includes a warning shield for doors and windows which acts as, a warning to potential thieves. Registration of the code number along with the name and address of the owner is sent on a registration form to the Identifax Computer center where it is available to police departments throughout the United States. The depart ments have access to a toll free telephone number, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and can learn in seconds the name and address of the owner of the stolen property. At a minimal cost, each kjt will serve to register an entire family. It is hoped that this will result in a uniform nation-wide program. The Illinois Federation of Women's clubs urges the cooperation of other organizations or interested citizens. Information on the program or kits is available by contacting Mrs. Albert Stilling of McHenry or community women's clubs in McHenry, Wonder Lake or Pistakee Highlands. Traffic Safety Legalization of motorized pedacycles (mopeds) in Illinois broadens the need for highway traffic safety education, Secretary of State Alan J. Dixon said recently. "The moped has an excellent safety record in Europe, where they have been popular for 30 years. But Illinois, with its fast traffic and high-powered cars and trucks is different from Europe," Dixon said. "All of us should realize that a new element has been introduced into our traffic patterns and we must use defensive driver techniques to cope with it," Dixon said. MONDAY NITE SPECIAL!
