Apple Varieties Offer Varied Characteristics "When you buy apples at the supermarket in plastic bags, you'll find information about the variety, size, weight, and U.S. grade marked on the package," says Kathi Heberer, University of Illinois Cooperative Extension adviser, "but when you pick your own, you're on your own." Ms. Heberer recommends * checking for signs of quality. Shape and color make apple varieties identifiable by sight. For instance, Rome Beauty is round. Red Delicious, solid red in color, is elongated with five points at the blossom end. Apples may be oval, or lop sided, large, medium-size, or small. Color may vary from dark red to warm, light red, golden yellow, green or, like the Mcintosh, two-toned with red and green. Color is important, whether red, yellow, or green. Oc casionally, there will be minor patches of a rough, brownish skin, called russeting, on part of the apple. This is usually caused by the weather and does not affect the eating quality of the fruit. Different varieties of apples also have their own charac teristic flavor and texture, says Ms. Heberer. The Rome Beauty has a thick skin and whitish- yellow flesh. Its taste is mildly tart. The flavor stands out best when the apple is cooked or baked. This apple holds its shape well during cooking, too. Jonathans have yellowish- white flesh with some red veins. Mcintosh apples also have faint red veins in the creamy white flesh. Both have thin skins, are juicy, crisp, aromatic, and moderately tart. B jth are very good all-purpose apples. Golden Delicious has a yellowish flesh. It is crisp and tender, tastes sweet and juicy, not acidic. It's another good all- purpose apple, good for eating, cooking, and baking. When exposed to air, Gold Delicious holds the color, without browning, longer than other varieties do. Red Delicious is a good eating apple because of its sweetness and juiciness. The Windbreak Plantings Rural landowners in Illinois may eventually save heating costs through windbreak plantings. Seedlings for such plantings will be offered for sale next spring by the Illinois Department of Conservation. Packets will include seventy- five seedlings each of white pine and autumn olive and planting instructions. The windbreak seedling program was adopted by the department following a "highly successful" six-county pilot program last spring, according to .State Forester Allan Mickelson. ATTHE . Is it the beginning or is it the end, when from this unusual life we descend. Six feet under and covered with ground surrounded by darkness, not hearing a sound. But unknown to man is the world that awaits When your last breath is final and the feelings so great. As the mist clouds your mind, you feel yourself falling, but you don't look behind. Then the question's upon you is there Heaven or Hell? You don't have an answer but you somehow can tell. A feeling so great seems to enter your soul, A light dims your vision, have you taken the toll? If the word called death . means the curtain is drawn, than birth's the beginning, but can I be wrong? Can anyone tell you what it's like to be dead? To be able to realize there's no way ahead? Is it for certain when your last breath is taken, that all life is drained but in your mind you awaken. Death isn't final, to this many agree, for dying is living and soon you will see, that life is eteraal.- You've nothing to fear for God is our friend and your time may be near. - by Ramona Zmich creamy white flesh oxidizes or darkens easily when exposed to air. It's a crisp, low-add apple with a mild aroma. Green apples, Newton Pip pins and Rhode Island and Northwest Greenings, are medium to large in size. They are moderately tart and have a crisp, firm texture. Excellent for cooking and baking, they are used primarily for com mercial processing. Good apples feel firm and heavy. The big ones look more attractive. However, small and medium sizes may be more practical buys and may keep better after being brought home. Small apples also make good snacks for children. When buying apples from a store, they are generally of fairly uniform size. A variety of sizes can be found when in dividuals pick their own or purchase "orchard run", or as they come from the orchard. Apples on a tree are usually free of bruises. In making selections, pick and handle carefully as they bruise easily. If choosing from a bin, check for bruises. Excessive bruising causes decay and spoilage. The five major varieties available are Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Mcintosh, Rome, and Jonathan. The variety chosen should depend on intended use.
