Hie consistent performance of the McHenry varsity golf team, culminating with a third place finish in the state tournament, should be a source of pride, not just for the team members, but for the entire athletic program, the student body, and the community. Too often, excellence, whether it be athletics, academics, or whatever, is overlooked. What the yowg men representing McHenry high school accomplished should not be forgotten. So let's take one final look at the 1977 golf season. It was a year to remember t ' MCHS 162, Grant 1M [ Itoe 182 total was the highest score McHenry shot all season. The u opening victory on the Fax Lake course was fashioned combining 40s from Tom Pepping, Tim Byers and Lunkenheimer, and a 42 from Pat Becker. MCH8155, Aattoch ltl | No one knew it at die time, but this dual match on Antioch's home course was a battle of titans. It was the only match Antioch ost all year. Following this victory, coach Charles Cuda said that a team score would be good enough to win just about every itch. At it turned out, he didn't need to worry. McHenry rarely a score as high a 155. In this victory, Jim Buenzli shot a 38 labile Pepping, lunkenheimer, and Becker each had 39s. ' MCHS158. Marian 189 This friendly rivalry was renewed on McHenry's home course, th the Warriors recording an easy victory. Byers led the way with a 37, while Buenzli had 39 and Pepping and Lunkenheimer added 40s. MCHS 154, Prospect 188 This victory served notice that the Warriors were definite contenders for state honors. Prospect was the defending state champion, and McHenry destroyed diem on McHenry's course. Pyers shot a 37 while Lunkenheimer, Becker, and Buenzli each had MCHS 154, Elgin Larkin 177 ' The Larkin match was played at the same time as the Prospect Victory, with the visiting Royals offering little opposition as McHenry boosted its record to 54). MCHS 148, Elgin 175 Hie 148 total was the lowest match score a McHenry team had 4ver shot in the twenty-seven years Cuda has been coach. The record-shattering performance was led by Lunkenheimer with a 38, Buenzli and Becker with 37s, Steve Kivley with a 39 and Mike Becker with a 40. MCHS 155, North Chicago 171 The Warriors' record went to 7-0 with this easy win. Buenzli led' with a 35, Pepping added a 38, and Becker, Byers, and Lunkenheimer each had 41s. The match was played at North Chicago. MCHS 152, Woodstock 179 I unkenhrtmer led the way in this easy win, shooting a 38 on the McHenry course. Byers and Pepping each had 38s, while Kivley and Becker added 40s. MCH8149, UbertyvOle 185 Once again, the Warriors dipped below the magic 150 mark. Lunkenheimer and Kivley fired 37s and Pepping and Byers had 38s in fashioning the victory. MCHS Wins Crown Tournament Twenty-one teams competed in the Crown Invitational tournament, and McHenry easily won the meet with a four-man, eighteen-hole team score of 308. Pepping was tournament medalist with a one-over-par 73, while Byers had a 74, Buenzli a 77, and Becker a 79. Crystal Lake finished second in the tournament with a MCHS iff. Crystal Lake 179 The victory streak reached ten with this win. Buenzli fired a 37, Becker added a 39, Pepping shot a 40, and Ron Pepping chipped in with a 41. Lake Forest 149, MCHS 155 Hie only non-tournament defeat McHenry suffered all season occurred on the Lake Forest course, when the winners' sixth and seventh men each shot 37s. McHenry was to get two more cracks at Lake Forest later in the year, in the Lake Forest Invitational tournament, and in the North Suburban conference meet MCHS 153, Crown 182 Lunkenheimer led the way with a 38 as the Warriors bounced back from their only defeat to record an easy triumph. MCHS 154, Zion-Benton 183 The duel meet season ended for McHenry with this win. The Warriors conchidedthe year 12-1. Buenzli was medalist in the match with a 37, while Pepping added a 38, Byers shot 39, and Lunkenheimer 40. With undying loyalty, - we praise the efforts of our team. When it comes to their record of wins and losses, it is hard to reach a* high note. North Chicago usually has a couple of speedsters in the backfield. Watch 'em. We stick to our prediction of a Warrior victory and will be there to watch the action. State and federal elections seem far away - not too far for prospective candidates to start throwing mud. Any time a person has to try to make himself look good by throwing out unfounded stories about the other fellow, it turns me off. HELP!!! cashed Anyone Bought a couple of boxes of Cracker Jack for our grand­ children today and found the price four times what it used to be-and the size of the box reduced by about the same margin. Halloween with a swarm of Trick or Treaters is just around the corner. It is a thrill to see the little ones in scary costumes. In the long ago, it was the custom for bigger boys to get enough manpower together to tip over those little buildings in the back yard. Inside plumbing spoiled all that. That's progress for you. Students at McHenry High were unhappy about the school referendum last Saturday, but showed great school spirit at a pep rally on Monday to honor their golf team. When one realizes there are some 800 high schools in the state, it is something to cheer about when your team finished third in final competiiton. Everybody was swelled with pride. Pro sports are getting rougt^r The TV picture of Abdul-Jabbar's cheap shot at Kent Benson was anything but sporting. Benson gave Jabbar the elbow and nobody could have blamed Jabbar if he chose to return the same. A blind side punch to the head is something else. Antioch won die tournament with a 334, while Lake Forest had 335, and Glenhrook North 341. Later, McHenry got another shot at each of those teams. Lunkenheimer was die low McHenry golfer with an 84. Byers shot 85, Buenzl fired an 86, and Pepping had a 90. MCHS Wins Conference Tourney In probably their finest performance of the year, the Warriors romped to the North Suburban conference golf title with a 907 total at McHenry's course on another miserable golfing day. Lake Forest was a distant second with 396. Ron Pepping and Buenzli each had 74s to lead the way, while Becker and Pepping shot 79 and 80 respectively. MCHS Third In District Two days after shooting a 307, McHenry fired a dismal 330 on the same course, barely avoiding elimination from the state tournament. The 330 score tied the Warriors for the third and final qualifying position with Crystal Lake. The meet was played under ideal conditions and was won by Waukegan East with a 322. Antioch shot 328 for second. Buenzli made a birdie putt on the eighteenth hole to keep McHenry alive in its quest for a state title. MCHS IMrd In Sectional Hie rain and cold struck again, and McHenry turned back Antioch, Glenbrook North, and a dozen others in placing third and qualifying for the state finals. McHenry had a team total of 313, three strokes behind New Trier West, and two strokes behind New Trier East Buenzli was the sectional medalist with a 74 while Pepping added a, 76. MCHS Third In Stnte A season of success was culminated in McHenry outclassed sixteen other finalists to state tournament behind winner New Trier 1 Frepid. Pepping was the sixth medalist in the entire state, shooting a 38-hole score of 151. The Warriors two-day total of 625 was just nine strokes behind the state champions, and was fashion through the efforts of Buenzli, Byers, Kivley, Becker, and the two peppings. All in all, it was a fulfilling ending to a year worth remembering. eld when third in the and Palatine •Tri-Levels 'Duplexes . . . & A F i n a l T h o u g h t It seemed like it all happened so quickly. That's my lasting impression of the state high school golf tournament. Why, when this is read, it will have been just two weeks since McHenry hosted the district tournament. The district meet was on a Thursday, the sectional meet was the following Tuesday, and three days after that, the state finals were played. This writer's whirlwind journey has covered more than 500 miles round trip from McHenry to Lake Forest and finally to Springfield. Indeed, it did happen quickly. There were so many memorable moments during the past two weeks, that space just doesn't permit mentioning them all. But a few stand out from the others. "Hie first came in the district meet. McHenry barely qualified for the sectional by tieing Crystal Lake for third place. The Warriors stayed in the title chase when Jim Buenzli, the last Warrior on the course, came in with a 79 to tie Crystal Lake. His 79 was assured when hie sank a long birdie putt on the 18th hide, and I remember it struck me funny at the time that everyone would cheer so loudly. Not that birdie putts shouldn't be cheered, but this was exceptionally loud, and at the time, no one could have possibly known that if Buenzli had missed the putt, McHenry would have been eliminated. No one could have known because there were still Crystal Lake and Zion-Benton (who finished one shot behind McHenry and Crystal Lake) golfers on the course. It was like, if Buenzli made the putt, everything would work out right. He did and it did. Buenzli also figured in another memorable moment, this one in the sectional in Lake Forest. Tom Pepping was already in the clubhouse with a 76, and Coach Charles Cuda knew that with some high nine hole scores on the board, he needed a low round from Buenzli to qualify for the state title. Buenzli had just chipped onto the final gpeen and Cuda walked out to check on how he was doing. Buenzli, as it turned out was the sectional medalist and was burning up the course. Only nobody kne^ it. When he told Cuda how he was doing, the coach gleefully punched the air with a fist and trotted back to the clubhouse. I remember the incident because seeing Cuda so excited was when I really began believing that golf, and for that matter, all minor sports, were important,' and that maybe there was more to the athletic program than my own personal favorites, football and basketball. From the sectional, I also remember the comments of some of the players from other schools, who simply couldn't believe that they were eliminated from further competition by a team from McHenry. It made me glad that I don't live in one of those fancy cities that someone has decided are more affluent than my city. More things go into making a community than how much money the residents have in the bank. Commentary The thing I remember best about the two days in Springfield was the great number of McHenry residents who traveled the 225 miles to watch the golf tournament. I'd be willing to bet that McHenry had more fans at the tourney than any other school except maybe Springfield. And McHenry fans had to travel the greatest distance to get to the tournament. Maybe it didn't make any difference to die players that they had fans supporting them so for from home. But I thought it did, and I was pleased to find that so many McHenryites cared. Yes, it happened so quickly. And when it was over, McHenry brought home an impressive third place trophy. That doesn't make any difference to me though... In my book, McHenry is No. 1.
