I rent a small apartment and have very little income. The only things I own are a few household goods and a 1970 car. Can I get SSI payments? A. It will depend on the amount of your income and the value of your car. The rules in the social security law for deciding whether a person is disabled differ from rules in some other Government and private disability programs. People who qualify under another program may not be eligible for social ' security disability benefits. Q. My father is going to apply for supplemental security income payments, but he needs financial help right away. Is there some place he can get immediate assistance? A. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Carl Bergstrom of Parkview avenue celebrated a very special birthday Oct. 25, and some of his friends came in to help him make merry. Carl was 90 years young, and lunch topped off by three cakes was enjoyed by Mary King, Ray Aguilar, Ruth Gumm, Kate Stasny, Jacqueline Todd, Harriet McNamara and the birthday boy himself. Carl received lots of cards in honor of the event, and some lovely gifts. Even though Mr. Bergstrom is no spring chicken, he ventures out every week to play his favorite game here in town with friends. Isn't it great to be so young at heart? CONDOLENCES We were sorry to hear of the death recently of John Danko, stepbrother of Mary Lenz of Parkview avenue and Chicago. It is sad to hear of anyope passing away, and our sym pathy goes to the family. SPECIAL NOTE Now that the summer season is over and the winter weather draws near, the Park and Beach board would like to acknowledge all those who helped to keep the grounds in shape. The park and beach have never before been in better condition. Elmer Thorpe has spent many days raking and getting rid of weeds and debris along the beach and keeping the park free of broken bottles, cans and junk. Harold Michels sprayed the weeds on the park and beach which helped to keep it looking so nice. ' * Without Jerry Raytraft's dedicated efforts and the use of his machinery none of the heavy work could have been done without great cost to the village. To the many people who kept watch on the park, well done. Through your vigilance, vandalism has been kept to a minimum. We now have a maintenance man who can complete more project^ we have in mind. Horseshoe pits, better picnic benches, and many other things. Many of your names have slipped from memory, but your contributions are well remembered. Don't forget that all boats should have been removed from the launch site by Oct. 31. Northerns from 24-38 inches have been spotted, bluegills are healthy and in abundance, there are little perch swimming around in there, some of them are eight inches long, and there are even some bass , although they were the hardest hit by last winter's freeze. If you are interested in purchasing a cookbook from the club, contact Joyce Larsen or Harriet Hammer, there are still some available. On Dec. 4, that's a Sunday, there will be an auction to benefit the Conservation club. Donations, pre-arranged minimum bid items,' and items on con signment will be accepted, and there will be a free pick-up service within a five-mile radius. CANCER Answerkline Aroertcm Cmcit SocMy New Prisons Governor Thompson recently announced that Centralia (Marion county) and Hifisboro (Montgomery county) were chosen as sites for two new medium security prisons. The facilities will each house 750 inmates, thus easing over crowding in the state's existing prisons. About 400 people from local labor markets will be employed at each facility. A travel agent asks: "Is a colostomy a handicap to nor ma] living? ANSWERline: No. A colostomy is an artificial opening in the bowel on the surface of the abdomen that is surgically created for the elimination of waste when portions of the colon or rectum are removed because of disease, including cancer. There are thousands of Americans-business people, homemakers, teachers, manual laborers, actors, nurses,-who have colostomies, and are able to lead pctive lives. This is entirely possible when patients learn a simple pattern of caring for them selves. To better help colostomy patients adjust to their new way of living, the American Cancer society has a volunteer visitor program in many communities and is helping to train professional therapists who work in hospitals. By the way, as a PAGE 17 • PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1977 has such tremendous energy and cheerfulness. Is it true?" ANSWERline: Yes. Many years before she became nationally famous for her in novative approach to French cooking and her appeal as a television personality, Julie Child had a breast removed to save her life from cancer. She is only one of thousands of women leading active lives despite mastectomy-and like most of them, Julia Child's operation was her personal business until she chose to make her surgery public to encourage other women. She has said, "we have such a breast fetish in this country that women are led to believe that they are absolutely useless without them. Sexuality is really a matter of attitude, not equipment." Today thousands of American Cancer society Reach to Recovery volunteers - all of them women who have had mastectomies-visit more than 50,000 new patients each year bringing that same message and practical help in wardrobe adjustments and exercise. A cigarette smoker wonders: "Is there an early detection test for lung cancer?" ANSWERline: At this point in medical history, regular checkups, including a chest x- ray for cigarette smokers, is the common method of detecting early lung cancer. However, at present in four major medical centers, an evaluation is being made of a new screening process which involves analysis of coughed-up sputum for possible cancer cells. While this is a 10-year study and the final results remain to be seen, preliminary reports note that if the sputum test is done every four months along'with x-rays, some lung cancer can be detected in an early stage when cure is most likely. Some 30,000 smokers are to be included in this vast study. Should this appraoch work well the next step would be to use it to screen people at very high risk of developing lung cancer.
