Fizzell, Extension adviser at the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension service in Cook county. You can use them in numerous ways to make your home more attractive. And an added bonus is that most flowering trees bloom the first year and every year thereafter. A flowering tree can provide an attractive view from a window. They can be used to frame a house or be in corporated into the foundation planting. The rounded forms of flowering trees add more in terest to a landscape design than the cone shape thai is commonly seen when evergreens are used. The evergreens tend to emphasize the house's vertical lines rather than helping to tie it in or Mend it into the ground and the surrounding landscape, ex plains Fizzell. Small flower trees such as white fringe tree or amelan- chier used near an entrance or on shallow lots, can add depth as well as beauty to the lot. Pruned or thinned flowering trees can be very useful when planted in front of picture windows that face busy streets or the hot afternoon sun. Used this way, the plant serves two additional purposes, shade and adding privacy to the home. Many patios in Illinois are plain, flat square slabs of cracked and stained concrete. Flowering trees can be uaedjo add a spot of beauty near the house without fear of damage to the patio slab, sewer pipes, drain tiles, or power lines. Used with a bed of ground cover or flowers and these trees help relieve the "blah's" and rigidity of a square slab con crete patio. Fizzell points eat that flowering trees such as redbud and hawthorn can add interest to hedges or screen plantings that are monotonous barriers rather than attractive land scape features. In addition, flowering trees can be at tractive when used in clumps to be viewed from the house or to enhance a desirable view by framing it. {M880S0000008I8800II, VJLMEKS \ With a total of 809,000 veterans and servicemen in training at the end of Sep tember, usage of the current GI BUI, which took effect in 1006, has exceeded seven million individuals, the Veterans ad ministration said today. -VA Administrator Max Cleland said the new figures mean that more than 17 million Americans have taken ad vantage of the GI bill since the inception of the popular urogram in 1044. To date in the life of the current, or "Vietnam-Era" GI bill, more than 7 million1 in dividuals have taken education training under its provisions. More than four million of these were enrolled hi college, VA said. This is approximately twice the number of men and women who took college ! World! training under the Wc legislation. WarU The sgency said September !s enrollment of 109,000 is down by about 296,000 from the mere than 1.1 million GI bill students enrolled in September a year ««o During all of fiscal year 1976, VAsaid, 2.8 million servicemen and veterans took advantage of die educational benefits. In fiscal year 1077. 'the total enrollment had decreased to 1,938,000. While the current GI bill enrollment stands at less than one million, the agency said it estimated that approximately six million Americans are currently eligible for such training. Eligibility extends for ten years after discharge from the armed services, hut VA said approximately 500,000 in dividuals allowed their en titlement to expire in the last year State Parks A recent cooperative agreement between the Illinois Department of Conservation and the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation provides for changes at state parks and historic sites to make them more accessible to han dicapped individuals. Con servation Department Director David Kenney pointed out that many parka already have specially-designed areas, end that the sgreementis a means of finding other sites when changee can~be made. "State parks and historic sites are meant to be enjoyed by all citizens of the etate," Kenney said.
