Hurricane Rally Stops St. Edward EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR HAPPY WARRIORS! That's what they were last tf Friday night as they pranced > off McCracken Field with a *M> $ victory over North Chicago's jj .football team. Tried to tell Dan Kinnerk before the kick-off that the Warriors would win after a hard battle. It wasn't that Dan wasn't hoping for a Warrior victory. He just thought the job was too big. It was also a happy crowd of Warrior fans that couldn't cover the smiles after the game. A neat pass from Pete Prust to Marty Nuss tied the game at 6-6. Then Marty kicked an angle shot through the uprights for three more points and a big win. Of course, there were other outstanding players so read about them in the report of the game It takes eleven men to play the game. Turnovers, penalties and what not made it look for a while like the fast stepping Warhawks were destined to win. There were spots in the second half when you wouldn't have given a wooden nickel for the Warriors' chance of vic tory. The Warhawks have lost some close games and don't look like a team that should be low in the standings. The way they spin, whirl and drive speaks well of the McHenry defense. Now for the Tigers at Crystal Lake Friday night. The Walshes were happy with an invitation to the McHenry Country club Oktoberfest held Saturday night. --And happy many times over as one of the best parties ever progressed through the evening. At a table with Ed and Mazie Buss, Art and Glo Jackson, and Wayne and Mary Gaylord, we had a barrel of fun. If one picture is worth a The new stuff is in! It won t be long now til the country side is white again And that means now is the time to come in and check out the new equipment and acces sories, while the selection is at its best And there s no crowd to compete with B'ing a friend, spend some time, and enjoy the neatest shopping around. With sincere pride, "BUsse" introduced the members of the MCHS golf team that brought honor as well as a trophy to McHenry from the state tournament. "Busse" thought enough of the boys to drive to Springfield to watch the Cuda team in action. The high school team let it be known how much they ap preciate the free use of the Country Club for practice and matches. Sounds like a nice arrangement for the school and players. Heard it has been going on for years. Of special interest was a Plaindealer sports page from way back in '44 when McHenry high was represented by Richard Schmitt, Dean Mc Cracken, Norman Knaack, Art Jackson and Harold Michels. "Mac" McCracken coached that team and saw them win second place in the state, only three strokes behind mighty Rockford. They should have a before and after picture of that team. Some of the boys have put on a few pounds. "Big John" Busscher swears he had nothing to do with it, but Marian Central scored two touchdowns in the final quarter Sunday to defeat surprisingly strong St. Edward of Elgin 20- 14. Ed Sandall plunged over for the winning score with just a couple of minutes left to cap a rally which began after the Hurricanes went into the final period trailing 14-6. Marian is now 3-3 in the West Suburban Catholic conference and is in fourth place. St. Edward dropped to 1-5 in "the WSCC and 1-7 overall. ' j The Hurricanes close out the season Saturday afternoon with a home , game against Benet. Benet, the WSCC champion, is undefeated (8-0), and is one of the favorites for the Class 3A state football championships which begin next week. The game Saturday affords the Hurricanes one final op portunity to prove that they deserve to be up higher in the standings. Marian, 3-5 overall, has won ; * its last two games. they had a German band that was just great. , Dorothy Hollister was also great as she (in costume) led the singing. Oh that Schnitzelbank! Burmann Captures X-Country Title Mike Burmann of McHenry was the individual winner Saturday in the state district qualifying cross country meet at Zion-Benton. McHenry qualified its entire team for this Saturday's sectional meet at Crystal Lake by placing fifth out of seventeen teams. The top five teams and the top five individual finishers not on a qualifying team all qualified for the Crystal Lake sectional. The story of the day however, was not the McHenry team, but Burmann. He became the first McHenry runner ever to win a district race, and he set a new course record in the process. Teammate Kevin Weisenberger finished ninth in the meet, and he, likeJBunnano, would ! (have qu«riHifeAfor the sectional even if McHeory'a team hadn't qualified /r.hr- ,T W<»T/ Libertyville won the meet with 56 points. Warren, Lake Forest, and Woodstock were all • ahead of McHenry. > • , No one, however, was ahead of Burmann. The mainstay of the team the entire year, he covered the slightly less than 3-mile course in 15:07. For Burmann, and the entire McHenry team, the Crystal Lake sectional will be tougher than the district. The sectional reads like a "who's who" of cross country, with almost every top team in the state being on hand. Teams McHenry will be competing against include Deerfield, the top cross country team in the nation according to some polls, Palatine, Palatine Fremd, Maine East, and Horsey. Other teams in the sectional include Buffalo Grove, Arlington, Crystal Lake, Hoffman - Estates, and Schaumburg. The top five teams in the Crystal Lake sectional and the top five individual runners not from qualifying teams, will advance to the state meet Nov. 12 in Peoria. Even though McHenry is a prohibitive underdog in the sectional meet Saturday, Burmann and Weisenberger both have a chance to qualify for the state finals. Later, Nuss booted a 22-yard field goal to give McHenry a 9-6 victory. Nuss has caught 38 passes this season, five of them for touchdowns. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Where were you when the lights went out? Where McHenry's football team was-was deep in its own territory, locked in a 6-6 tie, and struggling to avoid wasting another brilliant effort by the defensive unit. When the power went back on a minute later, the Warrior offense shifted into high gear, and coupled with a major error by the North Chicago defense, drove nearly the length of the field before Marty Nuss booted a 22-yard field goal to give the Warriors a come- from-behind 9-6 victory. That Nuss should provide the margin of victory was fitting. The brilliant split end caught four more passes Friday, giving him 38 on the season. One of his receptions was good for a 37-yard touchdown, his fifth of the year. In thife game, however, Nuss had to share the spotlight with running back Tim Oakley. For the second week in a row, the gutsy senior carried for more than 100 yards. He logged 126 yards in 18 carries, including a twisting, spinning 37-yard scamper which set up the winning field goal. Until that time, neither defense was willing to yield the winning score. Time after time, the Warhawks drove deep into Warrior territory, wily to be thrown back. In fact, McHenry started its winning drive after the Warrior defense stopped North Chicago on a fourth down and inches to go situation on the McHenry four-yard line. North Chicago led 6-0 at halftime, tallying its only points of the game on a two-yard run by Eric Rowell. McHenry countered in the third period when Nuss snared a Pete Prust aerial and turned it into a 37-yard scoring (day. Following the Warrior score, North Chicago drove to the McHenry four, where the drive stalled. McHenry then took over, ran two plays, and then one-half of the lights went out. When they went back on, McHenry found itself forced to punt from its own 15. Fortunately, ian overzealous defender roughed punter Mike Tollifson, giving McHenry tne ball with a first down on its own 30. Two plays later, Oakley made his 37-yard scamper, putting McHenry into field goal position. Nttes then booted the three-pointer which won the game. In the sophomore contest, McHenry rallied from a 16-0 deficit to tie North Chicago 16-16. The tie extended McHenry's unbeaten suing to three straight.
