STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Water Polo Team Ranked Ninth The McHenry high school varsity water polo team will play Palatine Fremd next Tuesday in McHenry's pool as the Warriors move into the final phase of their regular season schedule. McHenry presently holds a 5-2 record against strong competition, and is ranked ninth in the state. In Illinois, twenty-seven schools play water polo, with tiie teams being divided into two divisions based on ability. McHenry is in the division for the highly regarded water polo teams, with the Warriors holding down the ninth spot in the rankings. Next Tuesday's match against Palatine Fremd will be the second meeting this season between the two squads. McHenry won the first meeting between the two clubs 27- 12. Water polo is a game played with seven men in the water for each team at one time. Each squad has six players plus a goalie. The object of the game is to move the ball by whatever means into the net which sets above the water at either end of the pool. The game consists of four six-minute quarters, with the clock stopping with every whistle. Last year, the Warriors finished fifth in the state of Illinois. McHenry lost four starters from that team, but have successfully filled the voids. The mainstays of this year's team are returning lettermen Bob Hermes, Jim Hall, Dino Folz, and Dan Jackson. Filling the voids left through graduation are sophomores Darreld Sek and Pat Murray, and juniors Dane Relle, Bill Heinrich, Mark Costigan, and Chris Topp. Folz is the leading scorer so far this year, tallying twenty-three times. Hall has scored twenty-two times while Heinrich and Jackson have added fourteen each. Besides defeating Palatine Fremd, McHenry has also dumped Buffalo Grove 21-7, New Trier East 12-9, Glenbrook South 11-5, and St. .Viator 13-5. Hie two defeats came at the hands of fourth-ranked Glenbrook North 16-8, and fifth-ranked Loyola Academy 17-7. McHenry will get another shot at both Glenbrook North and Loyola later this season. Besides next Tuesday's match against Palatine Fremd, McHenry faces St. Viator Nov. 16, Glenbrook North Nov. 21, and Loyola Nov. 28. The state playoffs, of which McHenry will be a part, are scheduled for Dec. 2-3 at the University of Illinois Chicago Circle campus. The Warrior junior varsity water polo team is presently 3-3 on the year. They defeated New Trier East 10-8, Glenbrook South 8-4, and Palatine Fremd 11-4. McHenry was defeated by Loyola 11-5, Glenbrook North 10-9, and St. Viator 9-4. Members of the junior varsity team include Ron Maggie, Mark DeBuhr, Paul Fetzer, Gary Roth, Rich Hupe, Maris Petty, Dave Thornton, and Lee Carpenter. I STUFFED CABBAGE WITH MAINS) POTATOES, VEGETABLE. CUP OF SOUP A There was a bit of irony to the next to last weekend of football in the North Suburban con ference. " • . Libertyville, a 40-6 winner over Crown, was eliminated from contention in regard to a state Class 4A state high school playoff birth. The - Wildcats were eliminated due to a complex formula for breaking a three- way tie for the league cham pionship. Of course, the entire matter could be academic should Zion- Benton defeat Lake Forest Saturday. Presently, the Zee- Bees lead the league with a 6-0 mark, while the Scouts and Wildcats are 5-1. Should Zion-Benton lose to Lake Forest, and Libertyville defeat North Chicago, all three teams would tie for the NSC crown with 6-1 marks. The North Suburban con ference breaks a three-way tie by taking the margin of victory and-or defeat in each con ference game, and adding them together. However, the maximum number of points a team can receive for a victory is ten. Therefore, Libertyville's 40-6 victory over Crown Saturday was worth ten points. With one game to go, Libertyville has 22 victory points to 41 for Lake Forest and 44 for Zion-Benton. Thus, for Lake Forest to earn the conference playoff berth, it must not only defeat Zion- Benton, but it must win by more than one point. A one- point victory would give Lake Forest 42 victory points and Zion-Benton 43. A two-point victory would give Lake Forest 43 victory points and Zion- Benton 42. Lake Forest kept its con ference hopes alive Saturday by earning the maximum 10 victory points in defeating Crystal Lake 21-0. Zion-Benton received just eight victory points for beating Mundelein 14-6. In the West Suburban Catholic conference, unbeaten Benet continued to roll, pummeling Montini 28-7. The disappointment of the weekend came at Driscoll, where Marmion upset Driscoll 6-3. Driscoll won its first six games, but was whipped by Benet last week, and shocked by Marmion Saturday. In other games, Immaculate Conception blanked St. Francis 22-0, and Marian downed St. Edward 20-14. The gridiron season ends this week for all teams but those entering the state playoffs. Mundelein will visit Crown Saturday, while Libertyville will battle North Chicago McHenry is at Crystal Lake and Zion-Benton is at Lake Forest. STANDINGS North Suburban conf.
