The Students' View PAGE 9 - PI AINDEALER • FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1177 (by Parkland students) A look inside Parkland school finds many activities going on. So far this year Parkland has had two assemblies including a magic show and Student Council elections. | Student Council elections were held this year in the ; beginning of October. We first ! elected officers,. then | homeroom representatives and ; Uternates. Each candidate for ; an office had to file a petition 1 and have a campaign manager. ! After some campaigning, | preliminary elections were [ held to determine the finalists, j All finalists had to give short i speeches before the student j body. Then the final elections ; took place and the winners | were as follows: Julie Dowell, ! president; Julie Dowe, first I ' vice-president; Liz Lorenz, second vice-president; Margaret Hoffman, secretary; , and Chris Lorenz, treasurer. \ Parkland school is divided j into twenty-six homerooms, j Each homeroom has a t representative and an alternate { representative. The job of the j president of the Student Council is to arrange for and run i Student Council meetings. The j first vice-president and second ; vice-president are there to help j in case the president is absent. , The secretary is at meetings to ; take notes on important « matters. The job of the ; treasurer is to keep track of the { money. ; The representatives attend t meetings to bring up suggestions and to inform their homerooms of what the meeting was about. The alternate representatives at tend meetings when the representatives are absent or are unable to attend. Student Council is in charge of organizing school dances, assemblies, and working out school and faculty problems. This month Student Council is sponsoring a sock hop. The students will dress as teenagers from the 'fifties and 'sixties. Another event happening at Parkland was the election of cheerleaders. The Parkland '77-78 cheerleaders have been chosen. After the school practices there was a weekend break which gave all the contestants a chance to practice independently. Then they returned on a Monday to,, participate in Jfre (int gLJw tryout sessions*. The first was the semi-final in which some girls Wert eliminated from the finals which would pick the final squads. The try-out session consisted of each girl being assigned at random a cheer which she performed in front of a panel of six impartial judges. They were judged on ap pearance, poise, jumps, rhythm, control, pep, enthusiasm, and voice quality. Fifteen girls were selected in the finals which were held two days later. The finals were conducted in the same manner with a few changes in the panel of judges. Everyone trying out was nervous and many of the girls were apprehensive until they knew for sure that they 1 -had made it. The girls found out the following morning, and while there were a few disappointed girls, the squads > have worked out very well, f -^ The '77-78 cheerleaders are as follows: Eighth grade - JoAnne Campbell, Suzy Dober, Stacy Fox, Meg Hoffman, Dawn Parisi and Heidi Reihansperger; seventh grade- Angie Mortorano, JoLynn ! In sports, Parkland is a member of the Fox Valley Eight conference. The con ference consists of McHenry Junior high. Parkland, Hickory Hills, Cary, Johnsburg, Wauconda, Crystal Lake North, and Crytal Lake Lundahl. On Oct. 15, our boys "A" team took third place in softball by beating Wauconda, 16-1, losing to Hickory Hill in a great game, 7-3, and coming back to beat Crystal Lake North, 20-2. Pitcher Fritz Larsen pitched nine innings and gave up only one base on balls in the whole tournament. The Parkland Vikings won five and lost two for the season. The girls' softball tour nament was held at Parkland. Our girls took fifth place by losing 18-3 to Wauconda, who won the girls' tournament. Our cross country team competed in a conference tournament at Wauconda. The girls placed second and the boys placed fifth. Consistent effort throughout the season was shown by the birls' Greta Larsen and the boys' Chris Madgic and Mike Connors. This year at Parkland Junior high, a group of kids are part of a hearing impaired class. They are a part of the school and they participate in specials such as art and home economics and gym. Their teacher is Mrs. Dina. She talks to them with sign language, but some of them can hear partially. They do the same work that other students do but in a different form. The kids are in grades seven and eight. Their names are Kim, Kerri, John, Diane, Oscar, and Bill. They all seem to get along with the other students very well. They really like the special classes and gym. They enjoy being here at Parkland and we enjoy having them here. Parkland's chorus has been formed and is practicing for a Christmas concert in December. The chorus elected four officers to assist Mrs. Walters with decorations for concerts and to help organize concerts. The officers are as follows: President, Kim Stobbe; vice-president, JoAnne Campbell; secretary, Brad Salman; librarian, Denise Ahlgrim._ A Good Thing Few of us get what we deserve, for which most of us should be thankful. •Enquirer, Cincinnati.
