The salt raises the wine to the surface, and a simple sweep of the vacuum cleaner erases the stain. Generally, though, serve white wine to your party guests, says Perry. It doesn't stain nearly so much as red wine. For general stains and spills on furniture and car pets, Perry advises an appli cation of soda water. Wait about 10 minutes, she says, then blot with a paper towel and let dry. Finally, vacuum to remove residue and revive the carpet fiber's nap. If you're planning a buffet, Perry advises moving the chairs away from the dining room table to ease traffic flow. One word of caution: don't put the chairs against a wall, where guests can sit in them and cause marks on your wa l l s . The wa l l scratches aren't easy to dis guise. Prepare your party.foods in advance as much as possi-. Me, she stresses. Serve pre- dinner snacks like pate and cold vegetable trays and skit the nuts and potato chips. They're likely to get dropped on the carpet where they get ground into the pile. Spare your guests from unnecessary spills by using pads underneath area rugs, says Ferry.
