The state's senior citizens and disabled persons property tax relief act established in 1972, known as the Circuit Breaker law provides up to $500 a year in property tax relief and $100 in additional tax relief, is available to Illinois citizens 65 and older or disabled who have annual household incomes of less than $10,000. Q. Is there a deadline for filing my claim? A. Yes, citizens who have not filed for Circuit Breaker tax relief for any years between 1972 and 1976 have unti|^)ec. 31, 1977, to apply with the state. Beginning Jan. 1, 1978, maximum property tax relief grants will increase from $500 to $650 with a one-year limitation on the filing period for tax relief claims. Q. I am 65 and my income is under $10,000, but I live in public housing. I don't pay property taxes on my residence. Am I eligible for tax relief? A. Yes, you would not qualify for property tax relief, but you could qualify for a grant 6f between $50 and $100 under the additional grant program. A person need not have paid property taxes or have lived in a residence subject to the property tax to qualify for it. Q. I live in a nursing hoem. Can I qualify for a grant? A. Yes, it is psosible you are eligible for grants under both tax relief' programs. People who live in nursing or shelter care homes that are subject to the property tax in Illinois are eligible for property tax relief if they meet the other requirements on age or disability, income, and residency. Anyone eligible for property tax relief is automatically eligible for additional tax relief. People who live in houses not subject to property taxes can qualify for the additional tax relief grant as long as they meet the age or disability, income, and residency requirements. Q.
