NOVEMBER 18, 1977 ness. Then a corneal transplant restored her sight. She got her world back. Now she has a new dream on top of the old one - to help others have the miracle of sight. Barbara Shirley had wanted an education. "I had wanted to serve humanity and someday leave the world a better place than I'd found it..." She had just been getting started at Tennessee Temple college. Then one day the mountains and the sun became "strangely distant/' She tried to study and saw no print on the page. Mysteriously, she was almost blind. She had to leave college. Twenty-six months and many doctors later, a young op- thalmologist identified an unsuspected disease which had caused a malformation of the cornea. A heavy contact lens on her least affected eye enabled her, with difficulty, to finish college. She graduated summa cum laude. She started a teaching career. But her deteriorating sight made graduate school impossible and a corneal transplant essential. She had first one, then another. "My soul flooded with gratitude..." she said. "I looked untiringly into the smiling face of a 7- year-old daughter and thanked God for those who will their eyes that others may see." Out of her gratitude grew the second dream - the growth of eye research laboratories and eye banks in Georgia to serve those who are, or would become, blind. Barbara Shirley teaches, counsels and is a crusader against drugs. Sfie also movingly relates her personal miracle before group after group and pleads for eye donors. The Atlanta Eye bank has put her on its advisory board. Helping others is a great way to say, "Thanks." • o • • v Too many geniuses make for inefficiency. Daniel, mime, and he can make anything he creates out of silence and thin air seem real. T. Daniel will be performing Friday, Nov. 18, at 9:15 a.m. at Parkland Junior high school, 1802 Ringwood road, and at 10:50 a.m. at Valley View school, 6515 W. Route 120. The program varies with the mood and age of the audience, and is composed of vignettes, some of them pure mime and others using T. Daniel's background as a clown and magician. T. Daniel will ex plain and demonstrate some mime techniques, but the rest of the program is silent except for occasional musical in terludes. T. Daniel began his in volvement with the art of mime while a drama student at Illinois State university.
