Aside from cost, there are many factors to consider when selecting a motorcycle to buy. In fact, one could spend hours compiling a comprehensive list of desira ble features. However, for simplicity's sake, the good people at Kawasaki Motors Corp, USA, out of their Santa Ana, Calif., headquarters, offer this basic checklist for motorcycle shopping: 1. Gauge Your Size, Strength and Experience. One simple rule of thumb: You cannot control a ma chine that is too high for you. You should be able to stand over the saddle and touch the ground with both feet. You should also be able to put both feet flat on the ground when sitting on the bike. Be careful also not to consider a bigger bike than you can physically handle. You must be able to push it, place it on its center stand, push it in a figure 8 and park it without difficulty. Bigger bikes not only re quire more strength to han dle, they also require more sldU and ability to ride. 2. Determine the Kind of Riding You Intend to Do. Riding on the street, off- road, or for sport all take a certain kind of motorcycle. Thus, how you plan to ride will dictate your motorcycle preference. Street bikes perform well in traffic. The tires have treads designed to grip pave ment better, and the brakes must be very efficient. The engine and transmission are specifically designed to han dle traffic speeds. WHO KNOWS! 1. Trail bikes are light or medium sized and come equipped with a special suspension system to handle rough terrain. They have knobby tires for better trac tion in sand and dirt, and their engine is designed to produce more power at lower speeds for hill-climb ing purposes. * Sport cycles are those special "exotic" bikes de signed for racing, hill-climb ing, scrambles or other forms of two-wheeled sports. Motorcycles do come in "sizes"also. The size referred to is the engine's piston dis placement, measured in cubic centimeters (cc's). The more cc's of displacement, the larger the engine. Motor cycles can be placed general ly into three catagories for classification: Light weights - up to 200 cc's. Medium weights - from 200 cc's to 400cc's. Heavy weights - over 400 cc's. "Tailoring" a motorcycle to fit your needs is like shop ping for a custom-made suit. According to experts at Kawasaki, when it's right -- vou can feel the fit! CHICAGO--Sixteen hun dred 4-H members from across the nation will con verge on Chicago the week end after Thanksgiving for the 56th National 4-H Congress. The "Freedom To Be" theme of the five-day meet ing will highlight the oppor tunities 4-H offers young people for personal, social, life-skill and career development. „ Congress opens Nov. 27 and runs through Dec. 1 at the Conrad Hilton Hotel. Most delegates are older teens who have won state, sectional or national honors for their 1977 4-H projects. 273 of the delegates will share in national and region al scholarships totalling $249,500 to be awarded dur ing the week. Scholarships and expense-paid trips to con gress are donated by about 40 businesses, foundations and other private-sector organi zations. Several of these 4-H do nors sponsor mqjor events during congress. Among them are The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, which hosts a breakfast for all con gress participants, and Inter national Harvester Company, sponsor of an all-congress luncheon. Firestone is donor of awards in the national 4-H automotive program and Har vester supports the 4-H agri cultural program and several international exchanges. All delegates will be guests ofTupperware Home Parties, home management program donor, for an evening of musi cal entertainment at the Auditorium Theatre. And the National 4-H Photo Exhibi tion sponsored by Eastman Kodak Company, 4-H photog raphy donor, will be on view throughout the week. For the 25th year, adults who are former 4-H members can earn gold key awards and expense-paid trips to con gress as national winners in the 4-H alumni recognition program sponsored by Olin Corporation. National 4-H Congress is jointly planned and con ducted by the Cooperative Ex tension Service and National 4-H Council, with the sup port of the private sector, to provide education, inspira tion and recognition for out standing 4-H members. In addition to scholarships, expense-paid trips and other congress-related support, pri vate-sector resources make possible a variety of programs and services to 4-H through out the year. For example, a new 4-H wildlife conservation pro gram funded by Atlantic Richfield Foundation encour ages young people to take the lead in community and state conservation efforts. The Singer Company sup ports a training course to im prove 4-H leaders' teaching skills and members' learning experiences in the care and use of sewing machines.
