National recognition as one of the country's top young artists awaits the Illinois school child who designs the winning entry in the 1979 Christmas Seal Art project now being conducted by the Illinois Lung association and its parent organization, the American Lung association, in cooperation with the National Art Education association. "We are looking forward to • having another award-winning design in 1979 just as we did this yfear when a Seal design created by Michael Manning of suburban Argo was chosen to *represent Illinois as the national Christmas Seal," said Ben D. Kiningham, executive director of Illinois Lung association. Besides local recognition, the winning artists have their art work on display in Washington, D.C. at the Library of Congress, and they are guests at the White House for a picture taking ceremony with the President of the United States. . The deadline for entries in> the 1979 Christmas Seal Art project which is now under way is Jan. 3, 1978. All students in public and parochial schools, grades kindergarten through third grade are eligible to participate in Christmas Seal Art project according to Kiningham. The best designs from Illinois will be selected by professionals in art instruction at the center for Visual Arts in Bloomington, and then sub­ mitted to the American Lung association in New York where one of the entries will be chosen to represent Illinois on the national Christmas Seal. "Since 1979 will mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of the American Lung association we are asking children to paint their ideas about birthday celebrations during the holiday season," said Kiningham. To develop ^ this suggested theme or some other ideas such as season's greetings, holiday vacation or the night before Christmas, Kiningham suggested that teachers discuss them with their students and then let each individual develop it in their own manner. \ To meet the Christmas Seal Art project requirements all entries must be submitted in a horizontal format on either 12X18 inch paper or 18X24 inch paper. Recommended media are tempera paints, crayons and non-toxic felt tip pens. They must be received at the Illinois Lung association, 725 S. 26th street, Springfield, III., 62708, by Jan. 2, 1977. Dairy farmers of the cooperative who were elected delegates include Lowell Hill, Maple Park; John Nepermann, Elgin;. J. George Smith, Oswego; Robert Vanthournout, Hampshire; and Leo Berringer, Maple Park. Stay indoors during storms and cold snaps, unless you are in peak physical condition. If you must go out, avoid overexertion. Don't kill yourself shoveling snow. It is extremely hard work for anyone who is in less than prime physical condition, and can bring on a heart attack. Dress to fit the season. If you spend any time outdoors during cold weather, remember that several layers of loose-fitting, warm clothing are more ef­ fective and efficient than a single layer of thick clothing. And mittens, snug at the wrist, are better protection than are fingered gloves. If you are caught in your car in a winter storm, that car can be your best friend if you have prepared properly. Be sure your car is com­ pletely winterized.
