PAGE 6 - PLAIN DEALER - FRIDAY, JANUARY 6, 1978 "U TOURNEY CHAMPIONSHIP-The second annual high school tournament held Dec. 27 through Dec. 30 were exciting days for some twenty-two high school boys and girls of the Lakeland Tennis club from eight schools in the Lakeland area. The boys' tournament was a "double elimination" with each entry playing twice and the winner playing loser for the championship. Phil Kent of McHenry, left, was the only player undefeated, winning first place. Mike Gende was the winner of the loser bracket but played Phil Kent for the second place. Third went to George Richter of Antioch high school. Last year Antioch won all places with McHenry winning all but one this year. The entries for" the girls' tourney was limited so it was run Friday in a "Round Robin-total point championship". Kathy Mc Andrews of McHenry, right, won over Marguerite Mattel of Grant high school. ^STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Mike Zimmerman Wrestles Way To 2nd Place At Boylan Tournament , l'he Wrestling Warriors traveled to Rockford Boylan Wednesday and Thursday for the annual 16 team holiday tournament A tough team Irom Moline captured first place vuth Juliet Central close behind and host Boylan taking third place Although only seven varsity wrestlers were able to make the trip due to injuries. Bill Cheatham and Mark Zizsik each advanced to the wrestle-backs but lost to their opponents. The Wartf&wks are in sole possession of first place in the Nooih Suburban with a 4 and 0 3rd They are averaging 77 pts a game while holding their opponents to 57. The Hawks of Tom Gregorian have four lettermen returning from a team that advanced to the sectional finals before bowing to New Trier West . Led by 5'10" senior guard Eric Rowell who has an 18 pt conference average, the Warhawks are as usual a run and gun outfit Ty Jenkins a 6'5" 200 lb., plus center is the man who clears the boards, and has plenty of help f^pm senior forwards Jim Wakefield and Lamont Wallace both standing 6'3" Rounding out the starting five is junior Derrick Andrews a 6'2" guard The.Hawks recently finished third in the Pekin tourney, losing to the champions, Thornton of Harvey, in a close game in the semi finals Although the Hawks will be heavily favored to win this one, don't sell the Warriors short. If you can recall about 12 years ago the Warhawks with All Stater Rufus Woods came to town to play the lowly Warriors. Mr Woods and company went home with a defeat, their only one of the regular season, and it was the Warriors only win of the season So anything can hap pen. and it may happen again tonight Tomorrow night the Warriors take on a newcomer to the schedule Fremd of Palatine" They are coached by former Zion mentor Moe Tharp, and both Crystal Lake and Mun delein defeated them badly early in the season Directions to Fremd are take Rt 12 to the stoplight at Quentin road Turn right and follow Quentin road to the high school which will be on your right (•ames Tonight North Chicago at McHenry Zion Benton at Crown % Lake Forest at Crystal Lake Libertyville at Mundelein Games Saturday McHenry at Fremd Crystal Lake at Hersey Belvidere at Crown Mundelein at Forest View Snow Good News For Shrubs Hazardous Waste Storage Dr. Paul Peterson, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health has sent two scientific reports concerning storage of radioactive waste in Illinois to U.S. Rep Leo J. Peterson said the reports are being sent following the Committee's Dec. 8 tour of the Sheffield nuclear waste disposal site in Bureau county and the Morris spent nuclear reactor fuel storage site (Grundy county). Ac cording to Peterson, the reports outline programs designed by the department to protect the public health by its monitoring and inspection Snow is good news for shrubs and trees It may be a saviour for magnolias, evergreen guonymous, holly and pvrancantha that barely survived last winter's cold snap Snow is one kind of mulch that insulates the soil and prevents deep soil freezing A leaf blanket, straw or a layer of wood chips, grass clippings or partly composed garden trash is as effective as a continuous snow blanket and can still be applied. Last winter the snow- protected the roots and low branches from severe cold, but the tops of these plants suffered damage A windbreak around these recovering plants will help them escape the threat of another cold winter Construct a homemade windbreak around small plants Drive stakes, or fence posts, near the plants to create a triangle or a box Fasten heavy opaque plastic or burlap around the posts to create a w ind shield Extend the shield a - foot or more above the top of the paint. Do not permit the wrapping to touch the leaves or twigs If you build the box, leave a inch crack around the bottom to provide ven tilation on warm days. Do not cover the top The shield is intended to break the wind and provide some shade on bright sunny days When trees and shrubs are too tall for a practical wind shield, there isn't much you can do Rely on the mulch and fall fertilizing delay pruning until spring Excess foliage and sucker growth create a wind break that protects the plant Hold Training Session For New CUP Volunteers McHenry County Community Upholding Persons (CUP) is holding a training session for new CLIP volunteers Saturday, Jan. 6. from 9 a m to 3 p.m.. McHenry V*: On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt f ' ; .r.. ... , Now that the holiday basketball tournaments are a thing of the past, teams will get down to the serious business of winning conference games. Some highly rated teams came out of the holiday tourneys. St. Laurence of Chicago, Phillips and Martin Luther King of. the Public league, Carmel of Mundelein, St. Joseph's of Westchester, East St. Louis and Thornton of Harvey. These teams won major tournaments, and it will be interesting to see in March, how many of them are still around for the finals in Champaign. The North Suburban didn!lfare too well. North Chicago picked up a third at Pekin. "Crown took second at Grayslake, and the other six played a couple of games. The Warriors Will have their hands full tonight when North Chicago comes to town. The Warhawks are alone at the top of the North Suburban with a nifty 4 and 0 record. They really run and gun, and we hope the Warriors can slow them down to a waltz. Tomorrow night they travel to Palatine to take on a newcomer to the schedule Fremd High School. From Fremd's past performances, the Warriors should pick up a win here. Mary Sobczak will take his grapplers to North Chicago tonight, and then tomorrow will travel to Kaneland for a meet. The Warriors finished 13th at Rockford Boylan last week. Mike Zimmerman and Marty Nuss got most of the points for the Warriors. Once again injuries and illness plague the Warrior fortunes. This has been the problem throughout the season, and maybe one of these days we'll have a healthy Warrior team for a match. Next Saturday the Warriors will host their annual J.V. tourney at West campus. With all the newspapers taking a shot at voting who is the number one football teamjn the country, I think S.I.H. will agree with me if I pick the Irish for the top spot. The 1937 McHenry County tournament is the scene of memory lane this week. The tourney was held in Crystal Lake, and the Warriors defeated Huntley 35 to 26, Richmond 28 to 18, before they lost to Woodstock in the finals 41 to 28. While it's nice to make a profit on the sale of your home, the thought of paying taxes on that profit probably is not so nice But, if you are age 65 or older, sell your home in 1977 or later, and meet a couple of other requirements, thanks to a change in the tax law, you may be eligible for a larger tax break than in past years. In fact, claiming this break on the sale of your home can save you mairy dollars on your 1977 tax return If the adjusted sales price of the home you sell is $35,000 or less, you can exclude the entire gain from the sale of the home and pay no taxes on your profit. This means that if you bought a home for $15,(MX) in 1957 and sold it in 1977 or later with an adjusted sales price of $35,000, you would pay no tax on your $20,(KM) profit If the adjusted sales price is more than $35,000, the tax break is prorated In the past, the full tax break could be taken only if the adjusted sales price was $20,000 or less. Of course, as indicated, you must be age 65 to benefit from this break When the law speaks of ad justed sales price, it means the amount you receive after paying selling commissions and certain allowable fixing up expenses For example, if you sell your home for $45,000, paying a selling commission of $l,50o. and incur allowable fixing-up expenses (such as painting part of the interior of the house) of $500. your ad justed sales price is $43,000. To report the sale of your home you use Form 2119, "Sale or' Exchange of Personal Residence " After entering your sales price, selling commissions, and fixing-up expenses on the proper lines of the form and calculating your adjusted sales price, you must complete the form to determine the amount of your gain, and the amount of the gain, if any, that is taxable Form 2119 should be attached to your tax Form 1040, and the amount of taxable gain (after capital gain provisions) is ultimately added to the rest of your taxable income on Form 1040. Bear in mind you must use the 1040 form to claim this tax benefit Now what are the requirements for claiming the exclusion on the sale of a personal residence by an older American9 First, you must have owned and used the property as your principal place of residence for at least five years within an eight year period ending on the date of sale This means that a beach or other vacation home would not qualify for the ex elusion, nor would a home you purchased four years ago The second requirement is that you must never have used the tax exclusion before, because it may only be used once in your lifetime If the property is jointly owned, either person may take the exclusion More information on the sale of a home by older Americans is available free from the In ternal Revenue Service in Publication 523, "Tax In formation on Selling or Pur chasing Your Home." and Publication 554, "Tax Benefits for Older Americans " New revisions of these publications are available this month Sal "" ' BEEN CRUNCHED?
