SUPPLEMENT TO THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER PAGE 19 WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 11,1977 Time-savers to help working homemaker Homeowners beware . . . Select a contractor with care! Almost half the women in the United States have jobs outside the home and each year more and more women go out to work. If you're a working woman who finds household chores taking up too much of your time, there is a more practical solution to your problem than hiring an upstairs maid, a wardrobe mistress and a cook; it's organization. Delegate! Here are some time-saving tips that can help you shorten the hours spent on house keeping: 1.) Count on your family to help around the house. Keep a list of duties for them on a bulletin board in the kitchen where it's an easy reminder. A youngster can be re sponsible for picking up his toys; older children can be in charge of their rooms and also take turns setting and clearing the dinner table. Husbands can pick up and drop off drycleaning on their way home from work and help with other chores, too. Efficiefit cuisine 2.) Plan ahead; decide on menus for an entire week and then buy all your groceries at once. Shop on a weekday night, when the stores are less crowded, and take your older children along to help. When you do cook, pre pare foods in large quantities; many soups, stews and cas seroles can be stored in the refrigerator or freezer and warmed for quick, nutritious meals--even by your "all thumbs" teenager. Stitch in time 3.) Don't turn little jobs into big ones. Fingerprint smudges and dirty spots are often cleaned more easily if you wipe them right away. For quick, effective clean-ups, use Glass*Plus® glass, appliance, and cabinet cleaner in every room of the house. Just spray this ver satile cleaner on all washable surfaces--windows, mirrors, chrome, countertops, plastic l a m p s a n d t a b l e s . If you have the tree*, but your neighbor ends up with the leaves, help him to rake them up. * * * Invite someone whose family lives in another state to spend the holidays with you. • • • Say hello to the postman or bus driver. It'll make his tough job a little more pleasant. » • • Remember special oc casions by sending flowers. You can call a toll-free num ber 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and send beauti ful bouquets almost any where in the world through Avis Flowers Worldwide-- and charge them on your credit card. The number is easy to remember--call 800-648-AVIS. appliances--and wipe with a clean cloth or damp sponge. (Remember to always dis connect small electrical appliances before cleaning.) Just a moment Spending a few extra min utes during the week to han dle small jobs can make major clean-ups on the weekends easier. 4.) An un-made bed can make the entire bedroom look messy. Instead of the usual blanket and bedspread combination, try having your family use quilts. At night, just turn down the quilt and jump in: in the morning, sim ply smooth it out and fluff up the pillows. Evpi a five-year old can take care of his own bed that way! The National Home Im provement Council encour ages homeowners to exercise caution in their selection of a contractor for their home im provement projects. The Coupeil stresses that whila^fiTost' contractors are ethical, qualified busi nessmen, especially contrac tor members'of NHIC, there are always exceptions. These are likely to be among the itinerant'contractors who call at the homeowners' doors and try to sell an "improve ment" job on the spot, or a high-pressure salesman on tffe telephone. The banks, savings and loan associations, Better Business Bureaus, lumber dealers and real estate boards are good sources of informa tion on reliable contractors, in addition to the local chap ter offices of the National Home Improvement Coun cil. . It is advised that the homeowner ask for at least three bids from competing contractors. It should be stressed that each contractor should be given exactly the same plans and specifica tions on which to bid. The homeowner should make sure the following pro visions are contained in his contract: 1. It states that the con tractor will provide both labor and materials. 2. The contractor agrees to maintain required insur ance coverage, including workman's compensation. 3; Starting and completion dates are stated. 4. Plans and specifications are made a part of the con tract and substitutions can n o t b e m a d e e x c e p t b y mutual agreement, 5. Complete cleanup and removal of all waste mate rials is specified. 6. Work is guaranteed for a standard period, usually one year. •7. Payment is scheduled on satisfactory completion of the work or in installments that match the progress of the work, with an amount, usu ally 10 per cent, withheld pending final approval of the job by the owner. 8. The contractor agrees to secure all necessary per mits. 9. Consent of homeowner is required for any advertis ing or promotion of the job by the contractor.
