PAGE 8 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. JANUARY 13, 1®78 Eminence19' ̂ iO Q. How can I keep my moving costs down? A. The most obvious way is to give away or sell items you won't need at your new home. Here are other tips, relayed by the National Institute of Certified Moving Consultants: • Don't forget your refunds from electricity, gas, tele phone, water, fuel or oil com panies. Just phone;companies will not usually require your initial deposit receipt. • Hold down your temporary living expenses. Set up a port-' able emergency kitchen (pots, pans, silverware, hot plate) just in case a delay forces you to "housekeep" for days in an unlikely place. • Compile a history of your future home. Ask present owners for warranties and service manuals for furnaces and built-in appliances and for names of competent ser vice people. This can shortcut problems and save expenses later on. • Get receipts for articles given to charities, showing ap proximate value. They are tax deductible. • Keep records of aH moving costs. Most are tax deductible up to a total of $2500. Valid deductions include house hunting trips before the move, temporary living expenses and fees incurred for buying, sel ling or leasing a residence. Check with the IRS for details. Q. What about packing fragile items? A. By far the best way is to have the moving company do it. But, if you plan to do it yourself, use dish-pack con tainers with tops or other specially designed containers purchased from your mover. Place three inches of cush ioning material in the bottom. Sidereal time, of which we hear little, is an accurate measurement of time; it is the measurement of time derived from observation of the meri dian transits of the stars. It differs slightly from solar time. The mean sidereal day, for example is only 23 hours, .56 minutes and 4.09 seconds. The time required for the earth to make one complete revolution tround the sun is the sidereal year. The sidereal year is 365 days, 6 hours, 9 minutes and 9.5 seconds. Every fourth year, as the reader probably knows, the extra hours-Over and above the 365 days, are combined into an added day- in Leap Year. But the effect of this small time divergence has no noticeable bearing on our weather. HERE AND THERE IN BUSINESS c/American Kjtphen Gas Company Petitions For General Increase Northern Illinois Gas has petitioned the Illinois Commerce commission for a general rate increase averaging 12.1 per cent. This would be the second rate hike in the company's 24-year history. The new tariffs would add revenues of some $60 million; with another $64 million for the resulting higher federal, state and local taxes. Typical residential heating customers would see their bills rise about $4 per month, according to C.J. Gauthier, NI-Gas chairman. NI-Gas serves more than one and one-third million customers, of which over 90 per cent are residential users. The utility's 17,000-square-mile service territory includes thirty-five counties in the northern third of Illinois, but excludes Chicago and part of the North Shore. Anthony Dias Blue PORK CHOPS AND APPLES^ ^ The Normandy coast of France is famous, not only for ita beaches and their part in history, but for its apples which are used in many local main dishes and desserts and for ita Calvados, a potent apple brandy. , The following pork chop recipe uses both applea and Cal vados (you can substitute applejack if you wish). The public is in vited to attend. • Trim the chops of fat and sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. • With 1 tablespoon of butter lightly grease a heavy skillet that is large enough to hold all the chops in one layer. (If you don't have a skillet this big, use two smaller pans or brown the chops in two shifts of four each). • Place the skillet over medium heat and brown the chopa for 10 minutes on one side. • Meanwhile, peel and core the apples and slice into eighths. • Turn the chops and brown the other sides for 10 minutes. • When nicely browned on both sides, remove the chopa to a serving platter and keep warm. • Pour off any accumulated fat from the skillet. Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. • Add the chopped shallots or onions and cook a few minutes until they become transparent. Add the applea and cook, shaking the skillet and turning the apple aectiona with a spatula, for two minutes. • Add the applejack, stir and cook briefly. • Add the cream, stir and bring the sauce to a boil. Boil for 1 minute. • Pour the sauce over the chops and serve. A Consumer Service from the CYAN AMID Agricultural Division. Mchenry McHENRY 385-0144 •r» sSi. «i» Who is No one really knew. Alexander Executive Vice President American Bankers Association America's methods of transferring money are being streamlined, and one result will be better service for bank customers like you. Although the streamlining has produced such confusing acronyms as EFTS, POS and ATM, the basic idea is pretty simple. What is being proposed is to let electronic impulses carry some of the messages usually committed to paper. The most common piece of paper is the bank check, almost 27 billion of them each year. Replacing any significant percentage of these checks with electronic im pulses can improve your bank's service to you and cut costs as well. To begin at the beginning, EFTS stands for electronic funds transfer systems, the overall name for what's hap pening. One component of EFTS that you may have seen already, or will soon, is the automated teller machine, or ATM ATMs can do nearly all the things human tellers do. They accept deposits, offer cash SO • DISCOUNTS UP TO 30* V; WALLPAPER SALE! SALE ENDS JAN. 28th (Min. order--4 rolls) NO HANDLING CHARGES! To activate the ma chine, you insert a plastic card, punch your code number into the ATM and then give the machine pushbuttoned in structions. True, an ATM can't smile and say "hello!", but it works seven days a week, 24 houn a day, and never complaina. Some 1,500 banks have now installed more than 5,000 ATMs and the number increaa- es daily as electronica aaaista in improving bank services. Another aspect of EFTS involves the more than 6 mil lion Americans who are taking advantage of a program that deposits their Social Security, or other federal benefit pay ments, automatically. Thoae who choose this program have their paymenta credited electronically, saving a trip to the bank to cash the check and avoiding all possibility of the check being lost or stolen. p Point of Sale, or POS, takes electronic banking to where you shop. POS leta you make deposits or withdrawals, pay your utility bill or in surance premium -- even cash a check with ease. It involves the use of a plastic card plus a personal identification num ber known only to you, and an electronic terminal in place of a cash register. In its ultimate form, POS allows for an instantaneoua transfer of funds from your account at the time you < make a purchase in a depart ment store, grocery store, or gas station. But, even here you can still pay cash, pay by check, or draw on a line of credit. You make the de cision, EFTS provides the choice.
