The topic for the evening will be "Birth Without Violence," a concept introduced in 1974 by Frederick Leboyer, a French obstetrician. Leboyer's methods, often controversial, recommend a gentler approach to birth, as opposed to the normal methods that often include a busy, sometimes noisy delivery room with bright lights, and quick removal of the newborn to the nursery. L e b o y e r r e c o m m e n d s instead that the baby be delivered in a room with as little light as possible and with an absolute minimum of sound; immediately after birth, placing the baby on the mother's stomach and encouraging her to stroke it; and finally, placing the baby in a warm bath. Studies have shown that children experiencing a gentler birth develop calmer personalities. A film entitled "Gentle Birth" will be shown, and Dr. Richard Adams, an obstetrician new to the area, will further explain Leboyer's methods. Also on hand will be representatives from various area hospitals, Elgin, Woodstock, and McHenry, to discuss their hospital's policies and practices in labor and delivery, and the Leboyer method. Admission is free and the public is invited. The sponsoring group, SCOPE, is an organization that offers unique opportunities to make childbirth and parenting a shared and enriching experience. SCOPE helps many cope with their important roles as parents, and strives to strengthen the family by offering support, information, and educated approaches to birth «nd parenting. SCOPE welcomes support from parents, expectant couples, doctors, nurses, childbirth and child care educators, and anyone interested in promoting healthy children and families. The following programs combine to make SCOPE a valuable asset to family life: Pregnancy classes-The woman planning a pregnancy as well as the pregnant woman, can protect and provide for her growing baby by obtaining adequate information. For this reason, a bi-monthly class is offered to discuss nutrition, drugs, x-rays, exercises, and various other subjects as they relate to pregnancy. Prepared childbirth classes- SCOPE has attracted several childbirth educators, and through them is able to offer prepared childbirth classes to interested expectant couples. Mother's help line-This telephone service give non medical advice and emotional to newly delivered mothers as they assume total newborn care at home. Children's play groups- SCQPE members with pre schoolers can have their children participate in organized play groups that meet weekly in members' homes. 1 Parent Education meetings, open to the public, are held every three months and feature qualified speakers in many fields of early childhood care and education. The programs offer parents an opportunity to share ideas and gain knowledge on a particular area of parenting. SCOPE also holds many special events such as children's parties, mother's discussion groups, family activities, and a yearly bazaar. Club Yearbook Distribution To Town-Country Newcomers The quite cold weather of the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 10 did not deter attendance at the January monthly meeting of the Town and Country Newcomers club at St. Paul's Episcopal church in McHenry. President Sandy Howell cafted the meeting to order, greeting members and guests, then began introductions of visitors and distributed the Newcomers' membership yearbooks. The yearbooks, compiled under the direction of secretary-treasurer, Karen Rae Purcell, include listing of officers, general committees, a calendar of club events and a directory of membership. Social Chairman Shari Weakman reported on several upcoming club activities. The next "Tea, Talk and Sew" is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 19 at 9:30 a.m. at the home of Marilyn Bisiewicz. Members of the Newcomers' babysitting cooperative are also asked to be present, and tentative plans have been made for those attending to work on decorations for the April fashion show at that gathering. Mrs. Weakman also noted that arrangements had been finalised for an Italian theme progressive dinner for club members and their husbands Saturday, Jan. 28 beginning at 6:30 p.m. More complete details are available from Mrs. Weakman or the hostesses. Ways and Means committee chairman Judy Wilcox reported to the membership on current planning for the Town and Country Newcomers club fund-raising fashion show to be held Thursday evening, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Chapel Hill Country club. A portion of the funds raised will be donated to the community organization, FISH. Mrs. Wilcox stated that club members are encouraged to volunteer to aid in all phases of the show. Then Program Chairman Pat Przetacznik introduced the demonstrator from a local floral shop, who gave a fascinating presentation on unusual and beautiful floral arrangements.
