PAGE 6 - PLA1NDEALER - WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18. 1978 f v. Wrestling Warriors Lose To The Zee-Bees Coach Martin Sobczak's varsity wrestling team forfeited two weight classes Friday night to help Zion- Benton win thetronference dual 36 to 17. Had it not been for those forfeits, the match would have been a lot closer (17-24), with the Zee-Bees winning in six of the remaining weight classes and the Warriors jn four. Pat Ferbrache, the only freshman on the varsity squad, had the only Warrior pin of the match. At 98 pounds, the little wrestler had raised his season record to 4 wins and 10 losses and has had two pins in a row now. Named Wrestler of the Week, Ferbrache is certainly starting his high school wrestling career in fine style. Bruce Brda, a sophomore, chalked up a 14-0 superior decision against his Zion opponent: His season record now stands at 10 and 4. Mike Zimmerman decisioned his man and raised his record to 14- 4-1 for the season. ? The J.V. II won their match 38 to 26 in spite of three forfeited weight classes. Warrior pins were scored by Scott Zimmerman, Victor Betencourt, Chris Burhman, Eric Crittenden and Ed Hughes. Tom Cruetz and Tony Parisi decisioned their men. Zion beat the J.V. I squad 11 to 34 with the help of three forfeits and one pin. Why anyone would battle for last place I don't know, but putting forth a gallant effort, the IMPS captured the cellar. Johnny's Angels, bowling two short, put the pressure on and are now just Vfe game behind the Holy Terrors and first place. Double Trouble rolled up a total number of pins (2344) and are the pizza winners this week (see, you didn't have to buy). "When you're hot..." and G. Hubbard was that with a whopping 232 (SS of the week) followed by K. Homo (199) and D. Seaton (194...how did that happen?). E. Rogers whipped a beautiful 191 and B. Miller totaled a 168. The high series men were G. Hubbard (535), R. Justen (510), and A. Boeldt (506). The women did a great job as E. Rogers added up a total erf 474 and S. Blume got 465. Three people were primed for splits as R. Justen (7-5), R. Glawe (5- 7), and A. Street (5-10 and 5-7) got cheers from their team mates. Next week is prize night. Lescher ' An old rivalry will be renewed on Saturday night at West campus. This is the night the McHenry high Booster club will hold a basketball night for the purpose of helping out the schools athletic department. Gib Kurtz former coach at Woodstock has consented to take part and coach one of the alumni teams. Cliff Fulton, former Warrior coach, will be on the other bench. These two former coaches, along with the players of long ago, should make it a most interesting evening. Tickets are on sale at West Campus, and from members of the Booster club. Word has it that the faculty has come up with a couple of ringers, for their game with the intermural all stars. In Friday's edition we hope to have a complete list of the alumni that will take part and tyie team that they will represent, along with the coach of the team. So put aside Saturday night for an evening of entertainment. I know you won't be sorry for your effort. Tom Hughes Wins Wrestling Championship In JV Tourney At the annual Junior Varsity wrestling tournament at West campus Saturday, the McHenry junior varsity wrestlers captured on championship, one second place, one third place and two fourth places. The Warriors forfeited in the two upper weight classes and placed only fifth in the seven team tournament. The Crown wrestlers won the team championship trophy with a total of 134 team points. Their wrestlers claimed five weight class championships. Second place went to Libertyville with 105 team points, third to Crystal Lake with 99 and fourth to North Chicago with 89%. Sixth and seventh places went to Zion- Benton and Dundee respectively. McHenry's champion Warrior of the day was senior Tom Hughes who topped the 138 pound category. He won his three matches by a 7-2 decision, a pin in 2:41, and a 10-1 major decision. This brings his Junior Varsity record to 8-0 and his overall season record to 10-2. Doug Zimmerman at 132 pounds gained a second place standing while Jr. Rivera rated third place at 145 pounds. Taking fourth place ribbons at 155 and 167 pounds were Ed Hughes and Mark Whittington respectively. This well run tournament represents a lot of work on the part of the sewers, timers, mat workers, cheerleaders and many other volunteers. It is heartily welcomed by coaches who are looking for more competition for their junior varsity wrestlers. Pictures takes by our staff photographers of athletes on the high school level will be selected as to their importan ce. The McHenry high girl's swimming team was beaten by ' Waukegan East last week by the scoi^e of 128 to 42. In defense of the Warrior gals, they did improve their times, and what more can be asked, if an improvement is shown during the season. The 200 yd. Medley Relay >team of Thome, Manny, Long and Nank placed third with a time of 2:32.7. Cindy Weiss placed third in the 200 yd. freestyle with a time of 2:38. Angel Betancourt finished second in the 200 I.M. with a 2:48.2, her season low. Annette Cooper finished 4th in the diving. Angel Betancourt was nipped at the wire in the 100 yd. Butterfly and finished second just one half of a second off the winner. Cindy Weiss broke off over twelve seconds from her time in the 500 yd. freestyle, and barely lost at the finish, to place second for the Warriors, her time was a nifty 7:16.9. The 400 freestyle relay team of Long, Thome, Betancourt and Weiss, placed second with a time of 4:43.2. Alice Reilly Earns Fishing Citation Alice R. Reilly, 3111 Skyway drive, earned a Citation in the Metropolitan South Florida Fishing tournament when she caught a 50 lb., sailfish in the 12-pound division. She fished out of Islamorada on the Florida Keys. She will receive an arm patch and yearbook with her award at the close of the tournament. EARL WALSH Hear SPORTS EDITOR Dear So-I-Hear, Sure wish you had been here during the past week to enjoy one of the biggest and best weeks in Tucson's sports history, the Tucson Open Golf Tournament. Hope you watched at least a part oHt on television and noted the players in sports shorts sans sweaters, and the gals in shorts. What a life! Then to hear what was predicited for your area this week with the dropping temperatures, snow and wind. Ugh. ~ Had the good fortune to attend the banquet ,=<which annually precedes the tournament. Joe Garagiola was at his best as Emcee, with Tony Lasorda, manager of the L.A. Dodgers, the main speaker. He was very inspiring. Other well known guests were Don Zimmer, Red Sox manager and Rice, his DH. Wednesday I went to the Pro- Am event where President Ford made his appearance with many other notables. It was a great day but I don't like to be jostled about in a crowd of 40,000. Then came Thursday, the highlight of the week which you would have really enjoyed. It was a small cocktail party for about 30 people with the guest of honor none other than your old idol, Lawrence Welk. Had a good chat with him and found him warm and frieiidly, especially when he found I was from northern Illinois. He used to play at the Twin Lakes Ballroom but couldn't remember the name of the owner. When I came up with Charlie Rodemacher he was thrilled. Enclosed is a little note which he addressed to you personally. Hope you will put it among your treasures. Must go out into the sunshine and test the pool as this is really swimming weather!! As ever;, Zeke / Dear Zeke: It is always good to hear from you. Sounds like you are back in stride after your hospital bout. We probably wouldn't have known it was winter in these parts if the weatherman hadn't insisted on reporting the wind chill factor. Some snow fell the past week, the whitest the natives have ever seen. Thanks to Lawrence for his kind note. Being the self- appointed chairman of the Lawrence Welk Booster Club in the local area, I will treasure the note. So he played at Twin Lake? Some of us used to cover those dance halls quite often. It was a big trip in a model "T". Hope you enjoy your swimming. Not much of that going on in McHenry. The beaches have been closed until further notice. Keep healthy. The Same, "S.I.H." The super bowl game wasn't a big surprise. The Cowboys have the horses. Watching Coach Tom Landry made me think of a stone faced college professor. When he unbuttoned his coat at the end of the game, it seemed real devilish. But what a coach! Did you see those beautiful, scantily dressed cheerleaders at the bowl game leading a little pony around? Couldn't get my eyes off the pony. The country mourns Hubert Humphrey this week. The Happy Warrior was more popular in defeat than in victory. That turn around happens so often. When people swung to his side, his only sharp comment was, "Where were you when I needed you?" Those famous bike riders, Larry and Kay Huck, have taken to the indoors. Now they have exercise bicycles in their basement. We'll watch far them to go wheeling by soon after the robins return.
