"Never did it before," says the owner but remember it only has to happen one time. Forty calls a day to the Helping Paws office from people who are finding cats testify to the numbers of lost cats. And it's not the best of all possible worlds for cats in McHenry county or elsewhere. It's cold outdoors, bitterly cold; no regular din din set out in a bowl; no cozy bed; traffic hazards that might injure and not kill (a worse thing); cat haters; danger of worms and disease from what they forage to eat. To top it all, if a report is made and they are picked up by Animal Control, they will be held only briefly because of the limited amount of cage space for cats, and then it's "curtains". The shocker is how few of these cats wear ID tags so that owners can be located. Helping Paws does place cats in toster homes to wait to be claimed or adopted but here's the catch - right now HP has only four foster homes, and unless one is open, there's no place to hold the cat. HP suggests to some that they take the cat to the South Elgin shelter but as this is out of the county there's little chance that the owner will ever recover the cat. And only a few are adopted there - the figure is a pitifully small 6 percent. Many cat owners say it isn't fair to keep a cat confined indoors. Don't we all have to compromise in matters concerning our own welfare? We certainly do. And when it's the best solution for cats under the circumstances, it's also the fairest. The lucky fat cats whose owners settle the matter by keeping their pets indoors permanently have the last laugh here. And if owners must let their cats roam why not buy an inexpensive ID tag for the cat (call the HP office, 459-2641, for further information). The Students' View PARKLAND NEWS On Jan. 9, Parkland had an assembly called The Aces. Who are The Aces? They are Alan Blake and John Connelly, university graduates with degrees in philosophy and mathematics. They also happen to be members of the Highland Avenue Aces, 3 time International Guts Frisbee champions (1971,1972 and 1973) and two time international runners-up (1970 and 1974). In 1975 they placed third in the World Frisbee championship at the Rose Bowl in California. They have been recognized in Sports Illustrated, Time, OUI, and the New York Times for excellence in distance, accuracy, freestyle, frisbee golf, pairs freestyle and ultimate frisbee. We really enjoyed their demonstrations. The girls' seventh and eighth grade basketball teams 8t Parkland have started the year off great. On Jan. 4, they played Northwood Junior high. The seventh grade won 12-6 and the eighth grade won 28-10. Once again, on Jan. 6, both teams won. Hie seventh grade score was 16-5 and the eighth grade score was 27-12. They won the games against Olson Junior high, too. Then on Jan. 9 they played North Crystal Lake, winning the eighth grade game 31-11, but losing the seventh grade game 15-8. They both « came back Jan. 11 to win both games against Hickory Hill with scares of 17-4 and 39-27. Still there is volleyball coming up in the first week of February. As soon as it gets started we will inform you of the upcoming games. Parkland band and chorus students are getting ready for the various contests coming up in the following months. First, in Round Lake on Feb. 18 is the solo and ensemble contest. About forty sixth, seventh, and eighth graders will be taking vocal or instrumental solos or ensembles to be judged on a one, two, or three basis, one being the best. Before the contest will be a concert given for parents of the participating students. In March in Wauconda is the band contest. The full concert band will play a few songs and then be judged on the same scale as the contest in February. On the weekend of Feb. 24-25, at Harrison, the chorus contest will be held. The chorus will sing a few songs and be judged like the other two contests. In none of these contests is there competition between schools or - individuals. Each participant is awarded points based on that performance.
